  • Meshroom VS Zephyr [ENG]
    This is my second (but not final) video about photogrammetry. Fun topic! Curious? You should be in my opinion. Because the creation of a 3D model with the help of Meshroom, 3DF Zephyr or other software suites is really fun and is actually not that complicated. In this video I'm scanning a wall, but once you dive deeper into this topic, you can of course try to scan more complicated objects. You can then import the finished mesh in the 3D program of your choice. For me that's Blender.
    Just check out my short tutorial to get a first impression of the process.

      @@RandomRotation have not been able to get a solid mesh model. Taken 50 to 60 pictures 8 different times. Tried a turntable with a random pattern. Painted model grey, used my cell, and my camera.
      For some reason I'm not getting a good camera ring around the part. Even with the tripod I have holes. The image in blender looks terrible.
      In meshroom I can barely make it the image. It's a 1/16 scale car body.
      I would of thought it would of been easy to copy compared to all the things I've seen people shoot on you tube.

    If would scan something larger. I'd "scan it" with taking a video, then use "free video to jpg converter" and import the photos from that to meshroom

  • @robnhood3214
    @robnhood3214 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have used both but ditched Meshroom quite a while ago and use only Zephyr now. Not only is Zephyr faster and IMO more accurate but Meshroom constantly crashes if it encounters errors whereas Zephyr says it encountered an error and makes suggestions as to why the error occurred. The fact that Zephyr has 1000 times better error handling instead of crash and exit just shows better programming and less headaches.

    • @RandomRotation
      @RandomRotation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Less headaches is always welcome! I'm still learning this whole scanning thing. Next on my list is Metashape. Have you used that yet?

    • @robnhood3214
      @robnhood3214 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RandomRotation I actually haven't yet. It appears to have a more advanced point cloud system but the sample scans all look large. I wonder if it would handle smaller objects with the same detail as the larger scans. I do both. The purchase price kind of deterred me from giving it a try though. I already invested in Zephyr (Lite version) for the 500 file limit. I have been using video now and have it extract the images from that which makes it much easier (and easier on my clicking finger). I will more than likely give the trial a try though when I can find the time. Let me know what you think of it.

    You should also show the mesh without textures to see the gaps between the bricks - or just don't use just a flat wall. Most of the details you can see is the generated brick texture. But what matters is the geometry.

    I want to know how much detail can the software pull out of the photo. If you are going to review the scan, TURN OFF THE TEXTURES! The textures are going to hide details.

    I would had Meshroom VS Zephyr VS a caliper and Autodesk Inventor cause as far as using photogrammetry for mechanical parts, nothing worked for me. I spent hours upon hours trying everything humanly possible and I always
    ended up with a complete disaster. Totally not usable. At the end of the day, my conclusion is that it takes way less time reverse-engineering the parts from scratch in Inventor than fudging with photogrammetry and the part is perfect. I do understand though, that for anything heavily textured, it seems to be excellent.

  • @DanFrederiksen

    Are you comparing these two because they are free? if that's the criteria, that would be good to include in the title and intro.
    Agisoft Metashape seems strong but is not free.

    • @RandomRotation
      @RandomRotation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, not really. I am comparing them because they both do simular things. For me it is completely okay if things cost money, as long as they do what I need them to do. But don't get me wrong, a nice free tool is always welcome. Metashape is on my list too.

    • @DanFrederiksen
      @DanFrederiksen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RandomRotation I just experimented with it today. It's half decent, but it's a bit slow, laborious, and conventional algorithm that prefers to be close and created blobby snowdrift type geometry. We could really use a generational shift into neural net photogrammetry that actually sees shapes, not mangled blob terrains. It could suddenly be really really good.

    Common misconception is that smartphones can not compete with DSLRs or Mirrorless cameras but that's half true. Smart phones are actually more ideal and optimal in well exposed areas on multiple levels. True, you do not get the benefits of RAW images with most smart phones but this is only beneficial if you plan to push the colors future than 8-BIT can handle before making a mess. I plan on doing a test using my iPhone XR and Canon EOS M but i'm almost positive the iPhone will do better by default due to AI reconstruction.
