Precession of Earth's Axis - Working Model

  • Understand precession with the help of simple model.
Earth has 4 kinds of movements.
    Earth revolves around the SUN.
Earth also spins around its axis as it revolves. It spins around its axis in approximately 24 hours which creates day and night.
Remaining two movements are related to the Earth's axis.
Wobbling and change in tilt angle of the axis.
Just like the top, Earth’s axis wobbles.
Let us understand the third movement with the help of a model.
This is the Northern Hemisphere and this is the Southern Hemisphere of Earth
Imaginary line dividing these two hemispheres is known as the equator.
This is the axis of the Earth around which it rotates.
Let us place this disc between two hemispheres. It represents Earth's equatorial plane.
We will mount this assembly on this platform.
I can rotate it by hand like this.
This is the North Pole and if we extend it further, the tip of this axle can be considered as the Celestial North Pole.
Somewhere here will be the celestial South Pole.
Extension of the Earth's equatorial plane defines the celestial equator.
Let us insert the axle in this hole so that the axis is now tilted by an angle of 23 and half .
But with respect to which axis it is tilted ?
Let us add another disc to the setup.
This disc represents the ecliptic plane.
On this plane Earth goes around the SUN in one year.
In our model , with respect to Earth, SUN will be on this plane.
Let us also identify four cardinal points on the equatorial plane.
There are two points where the celestial equator and ecliptic intersect. On these days day and nights are of equal length. These are points where Equinoxes happen. Other two points are the Summer solstice and winter solstice.
On the summer solstice, Earth's maximum axial tilt toward the Sun is 23.44. We can mark this point here. Point exactly opposite the summer solstice is the winter solstice.
There are two points where the Celestial Equatorial plane and ecliptic plane interact. This is the point of the vernal equinox. 180 degrees from here is Autumn equinox.
We can better represent it with this dial. Let's place it on the equatorial plane.
Four cardinal points along with the Gregorian calendar are marked on the dial. This will help in our analysis later.
Rotating the axle holder like this enables us to explore the third movement. Wobbling of Earth’s axis. Earth’s axis is rotating about another axis. Axis of an ecliptic plane. This is known as the Precession of Earth’s axis.. It happens due to gravitational forces of the Sun and Moon on the Earth.
Earth goes through one such complete precessional cycle in a period of approximately 26,000 years or 1° every 72 years . The amount of precessional motion is 50.37" per year. But this
amount is not fixed and this value changes between 44.5" and 56"
    .
Let us add this dial on the ecliptic plane. It represents almost steady positions of all the stars and constellations. There are 12 constellations and 27 Nakshatra we are familiar with.
Although the amount of motion is very small in a year, with the motion being unidirectional, the positions of the equinoxes change sufficiently over a long period of time. This positional shift of the equinoctial points is known as Precession of the Equinoxes.
Now the Vernal equinox happens near Aries and in approximately 1000 years in another zodiac.
There is another important change which happens due to this movement.
Let us place this transparent disc on the top.
Let us rotate the assembly slowly to visualize how orientation of the Celestial North Pole changes over time.
Small red bead represents the Ecliptic North Pole. The Celestial North Pole also rotates due to precession over the course of the year.
Precession changes the pole star as seen from Earth. [ Brightest star somewhere near the Celestial North Pole ]
Right now Polaris is the pole star. After around 8000 years, Deneb will be the pole star. In another 4000 years, Vega will be the new Pole Star. Another 5000 years later, Thuban will be the pole star.
Forth Motion is the obliquity of Earth’s axis. It moves between 22.5 degrees and 24 degrees.
The angle Earth’s axis of rotation is tilted as it travels around the Sun is known as obliquity. Obliquity is why Earth has seasons. Over the last million years, it has varied between 22.1 and 24.5 degrees with respect to Earth’s orbital plane.
In the next video, we will explore the connection between precession and two types of calendars, Tropical and sidereal.
    Thank You.

It is indeed as Capra concluded: “Hundreds of years ago, Indian artists created visual images of dancing Shivas in a beautiful series of bronzes. In our time, physicists have used the most advanced technology to portray the patterns of the cosmic dance. The metaphor of the cosmic dance thus unifies ancient mythology, religious art and modern physics.”
Spanning 4 Vedas, 18 Puranas, 2 epics - the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and umpteen Upanishads, the Hindu mythology is immensely vast. In these books, reside a good portion of human knowledge - morality, war, taxation, law, architecture, Cosmology, Philosophy, Geography.
The origin of the universe, and also the multiverse, is detailed in Linga Purana, dedicated to the destroyer, Lord Shiva, the Mahakaal.
The life of the universe, as noted by Carl Sagan, though billions of solar years, is just one day in the life of Brahma.
“The period of the duration of the Prakrita creation is said to be a day of Brahma. There is a similar period constituting the night. The lord effects creation during day time and dissolution during the night. He has neither a day nor a night (as we understand the terms). The time-duration by day and night is used in a secondary sense.
During the (so-called) day all the Vikrtis-the Visvedevas, the Prajapatis and the sages stay by. During the night all of them are dissolved. They are produced (again) at the end of the night. A day of His constitutes our kalpa, His night too similarly another kalpa. There are fourteen Manus by the time a thousand sets of four yugas come to a close. O brahmins, the Krta yuga consists of four thousand years. Four hundred, three hundred, two hundred and hundred years respectively constitute the period of transition both at the beginning and end of a yuga.”
The text then dwells in further detail about the ages of the Yugas, the transition period between them. It talks about the length of the Yugas, totalling to 4,320,000 human years. One kalpa (day) of Brahma is equal to thousand of these sets, the night a thousands more.
“Thus the duration of the four yugas, without the period of junction and transition totals to three million six hundred thousand human years. If Sandhya periods are included, the set of four ages will consist of four million three hundred and twenty thousand years. A little over seventy one sets of four yugas-Krta, Treta, Dvapara and Kali-constitute a manvantara.” The number of human years in a manvantara are thirty crures six million and seven hundred and twenty thousand, O excellent brahmins. The period of a manvantara, according to this Purana, is not more than this.
The number of years in one set of four yugas have been mentioned earlier. O excellent brahmins, a thousand such sets of four yugas constitute a kalpa (of Brahma).
During Brahma’s night the creatures perish; at the end of the night they are created again. There are twenty-eight crores of gods who move in aerial chariots.”
In essence, a full day-night cycle of Brahma, with the day representing creation (or expansion / the Big Bang), and the night representing the destruction (or contraction / the Big Crunch), comes to 2000 sets of 4.32 million years, or 8.64 billion years.
This is the age of one universe, after which a new one begins.

No one is adding the Dzhanibekov Effect into the whole equation and saying the angle change is this and that (millions! of years ago) who verified this?, by a bit of change in the mass distribution the frequency changes and creates a flip. (a bit of change could be melting ice caps) Now I'm wondering Taking all these variables into account can't we just reverse engineer a possible Dzhanibekov Effect from the past? These were literally written in some books; the sun raised from the west.
PS Great video, this is not that I dis the info, the info is what we know the the western mainstream science, in which now we need to be way more open minded about. When someone says something like "millions of years ago".... nah like wait a minute...

Because without the oblique movement of the moon it would be impossible for a lunar or solar eclipse to occur, in fact an eclipse could occur all the time. Old indian text related to astronomy do mention different pole stars. Current one is Polaris while Shishumara was the earlier one. You can refer to ParasharTantra / Vridhha Garg samhita which mentions about these. One can decide timeline / rate of precession based on the movement of the celestial north pole with respect to the Nakshatras

Earths axis does not wobble. A mass rotating around an axis in space will seek to spin with no wobble in it's axis and even when disturbed will quickly return to no wobble. As our sun moves forward through space it is moving in a spiral around a large Birkland current- Imagine spiraling forward around the length of a rope stretched out in front of you.For our sun to make one spiral along the Birkland current takes 26000+ yrs.
