Hello from Texas. Great and Honest review of the Sg. I’ve also always found that the Gibson SG’s kinda have their own distinct Sound. If you want to play any AC/DC you almost have to have s SG to do it with the right Sound. One of my Favorite Guitar Players of all time , was Frank Marino of Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush. It was very Rare for him to play anything but a SG. They are Great Guitars and really underrated. Everyone wants a Gibson Les Paul. I would Love to Live in Australia, and if I did I would definitely want to have a Jam session with you. Thanks for all the Work you put into these Videos. I’m always looking forward to the next one.👍👍
I absolutely love open pore brown SGs (think faded previously). This is a great deal guitar and one point of difference between it and Les Paul Tribute (which is also amazing) is there is no weight relief due to SGs shape meaning it's that much more "authentic" to the "real deal". Gibsons tribute series is great stuff man, my wishlist is way too long and there are a few Gibson tribute models up there on it
From Leo: I always enjoy your demonstrations. I am kind of an SG fan, in fact it is the only solid body gibson product I like. Every guitar is different, but when I was in the market for one, The pro model Epiphone SG was just a better feeling, and sounding guitar to me than the entry level gibson. It also had a better neck balance. I bought a red Epiphone. I am still happy with it
Yeah, this is $1300 at Sweetwater. SG's are pretty simple guitars. My Cherry Epiphone SG ha been great. I swapped the pickups and locking tuners and the nut for a graphtec,
Hahaha great finish for the thumbnail :-) Smart looking SG, just checked the price... Man, inflation or what? I remember when there were around 600 euros!
Thanks, Shane. These Tributes seem to be good guitars, but they really shot up in price rapidly. When I first saw the LP Tributes appear on the Australian market around 2019/20 they were around the AUD$1400 mark. Now they are around AUD$2400, just 3 or 4 years later. They didn't remain "affordable" for very long, (aside from in comparison to non-Tribute Gibsons).
Cool vid 👍 I played one of these at my local store the other day and really liked it. The neck was great and I liked it’s neck better than my SG standard. The Gibson Tribute series is really good IMO.
Well, I just got myself the Harley Benton DC-580 in red for lefties. I've seen this Gibson model in the Thomann online store and I really like the finish and the color. Maybe later.
I like the classic red look, but it's great to see more options- especially in lefties! Hot pickups, too, making this a rock machine! Fun review, Shane!
I have an older version from 2007 with the mahogany neck. I bought mine without pickups, so I put p90's in it, one of my favorites. I love the idea of a maple neck, I loved that on 70's les Paul's
Great review as always! I think this might be my dream SG... I have the Gibson LP Faded 2018 which has a very similar no nonsense look and construction - that is stunning... and light weight too. It has so much mojo and bite in the pups. I love the stripped down, no messing about rock of these guitars. Man, this SG is nice and sounds wicked! Awesome, just awesome.
I certainly like the colour. Looks like what most cherry reds end up once the paint fades LOL. And very much resembles the Specials of the 60's. I didn't particular like the square inlays they used on the older tributes. But $2400AU for a tribute seems a bit pricey. There's much better options available if you don't particular mind what's on the headstock. These days I'm more inclined to buy a Tokai
I went to the Robby Krieger Show at the Whiskey this July 1st, made me appreciate how cool an SG sounds. The Guitar’s a good bargain, thanks Shane you’re awesome
Lovely guitar and well worth the money. Have never understood the complaints which the 490r/t combo gets from some quarters, they're muscular and crisp.
The SG Tribute checks so many of my preferences, especially the maple neck, it was my first ever new Gibson purchase. Mine is also a featherweight and does all the SG things. What more could I ask for ? I guess I would love a P90 wraparound variant for another setup. No complaints.
Great review! I love the natural Mahogany grain too! A good textured strap, will counter that neck dive just fine. I love the tones you were able to get out of that, both the crunchy and clean, sounded awesome!
Got this guitar yesterday- your video did a great part in selling it - it’s one of the best guitars I’ve ever played , my first Gibson after playing for 15 years , was looking for a light guitar that has a powerful sound for my Band - we have a set of about 40 songs so practice is always about 3-4 hours wich made my back hurt a lot. It looks , plays and sounds phenomenal and NO NECK DIVE on mine (I always use a leather strap) I can recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a rock solid no bells and whistles Guitar
Thanks for the video Shane! As a fellow lefty, you have no idea - or maybe you do; a little- how much your opinions and reviews mean. I simply wish the guitar had the smaller pickguard and trapezoid inlays, like the LP Tribute and would be an instant buy. I’ll be waiting for the ‘61 SG. Thank you for the video as always
I absolutely love my ‘21 SG Tribute! I agree the satin finish is one of my favorite aspects of this guitar. Neck dive has always been a complaint with the SG and the tribute is no exception, likely, because of the maple neck. I use a wider split leather strap so the suede side grips your shirt a bit.
These are a great option. Not a huge difference between these and the standards, main thing is a maple neck instead of mahogany and a bag not a hard case. Apart from the the pickups the rest is just cosmetics. Good review Shane! These are a bit like the faded specials they used to sell, only they were a bit cheaper at the time.
@@MrJohnnyDistortion Aha, I didn't realize that was in the specs as well. Walnut is a nice wood to have a guitar body made out of. Looks great on acoustics also. I think too many guitarists are traditionalists and want everything the same as it was in history instead of looking to the future.
@andrewksadventures Walnut is also heavier. No neck dive. And it has that damn 10 degree fingerboard radius and no individual saddle height adjustments.
@@MrJohnnyDistortion I guess that's why they don't use Walnut so much, if it's heavy. That's flat fretboard, I wonder why they changed the specs. I thought everything else was the same. Didn't know you couldn't adjust the bridge for intonation. I'd change that if possible. Still seem like good guitars for the money. Are you happy with it?
@andrewksadventures You should read posts slowly so that you don't misunderstad people's posts. I never said anything about intonation difficulty. It's the overall string height per each string that cannot be set to a low height because of the 10 degree radius and a saddle bridge that does not allow for individual string height adjustments. And no, I am not happy with Gibsons short sighted and poorly thought out guitars and poor playability.
Excellent review and demo! Thanks for demonstrating so well the different tones and sounds this guitar can make with your versatile, very skilled playing! I like the non-standard color and finish, too. And I'm a big fan of light weight guitars, being an old guy who's been playing for more than 50 years - my shoulders and neck appreciate that, for sure!
I’m the same way. I’m 62 and I have been Rocking the Guitar since I was 7 Yrs Old. My Old Gibson Les Paul Custom made in 1976 without the Weight relief Body is getting pretty heavy. The Old Solid Body Gibsons weigh around 12Lbs I think it is. I still think the Solid Body Gibsons sound the best though. I’ve always wondered if the Shape of the SG effected the way it Resonates to give it that distinctive Growl Sound?
Great video. Great sounding guitar. Thanks for your review. One thing you didn't cover that I'd like to know: Does it stay in tune well? If it doesn't stay in tune, that's definitely a deal-breaker!
Great review. I love my SG tribute: comfortable, fast, thick tone with cut and mine's not too neck dive'y either. Modded the pickups with some foil tops to give it a distinctive look.
This has been my main guitar for 4-5 years now. Gigged it heavily and its still fantastic. Only thing ive done is swap the neck pickup for a Seymour Duncan phat cat for a more p90 tone at the neck.
I have several Gibsons including an LP Tribute with P90s i got for a very good price. It is quite good but it is more raw so to speak and has its own character so it gets played for that reason.
Oh sounds sooooo good ... I enjoyed and LOVE this demo of the SG.. so much ... And Miss my 67 or 68 I once had .... But it was worn out .... and I sold it at a good price to someone who became so happy for it .. after it had a big overhaul.... When I sould the guitar it could not play any more :)
Yes the Satin finish is much better. I have a 2003 Gibson SG Special and the paint job has not stood the test of time. Partly due to in my younger days I was in a Punk band before I started to get into the blues but even if it not been gigged in such conditions - it would still not of lasted. They are prone to denting and chipping with the Gloss. Would never get Gloss again.
I love the Gibson pickups.. but much prefer the LTD Viper look... so I bought used Gibson pickups and put it in my white LTD Viper 1000 Deluxe Cherry and I'm super happy .
Interesting guitar... are these essentially replacing the SG Special Faded model? Those had a similar, low-gloss finish (came in red or brown)--have one from 2002, and very much enjoy it. Cheers.
It is the same guitar aside from they changed the neck to maple. Tribute made sense as a name when it was a 70s or 60s tribute but now it's like what is it a tribute to? A "real" Gibson? They're cool guitars and before the price increases they were a good value.
Nice tones, funny you mentioned the pickup as it could be the neck angle. I've owned at least 7 new Gibsons and played more and find just about anything under the Standard models like Tributes and Classics, signatures etc. usually have an off kilt neck angle. you easily tell by checking the tunomatic bridge screw heights. Heights overall and especially in relation to one another. This tells the story of the set net neck angle to the body. I've seen around 8-10mm up on one side and almost screwed to the body on the other side in extreme example. With experience its obvious to me the grade these as you'd expect and put the outliers in the cheaper models.
Nice sounding guitar but the price in Australia is ridiculous. Hopefully nobody buys them, so Gibson get a wakeup call - but I'm not holding my breath. The fact that many people here think it's good value I find very alarming. I want a lot more guitar than this for $AUD2500.
That comes in at £1,300. They can be found for £1,000 in the UK including taxes. I dunno, prices for new big brand guitars are crazy. It's funny they call it a tribute.
They're $1,299.99... not what I would consider affordable for most. This is the best guitar I've ever owned, even better than the '76 Standard I owned for about 20 years. No neck dive at all on mine.
A good guitar for the price. Although he would have preferred Grover tuners. Good sound, but it is what is expected from a Gibson, good woods, a color that I personally like a lot. It's almost perfect.
I feel that the 490s are OK in the SG, maybe because of the solid mahogany thinner body. I found them to be too muddy and dark in my LP, even after swapping magnets to something snappier. They sound good in that guitar though.
It's not that the pickups don't have enough high end , but they do have (by the sound of it) too much low mids for that treble to sit on. Back in the seventies I had an old SG with P90's, and it was not so much dark, as it was "dull". I couldn't handle the big dull thick and ill-defined tone through my Marshall( maybe a twin would have made it sound better), so I git rid of it, and although I'm open minded to hear a new SG, this one you demonstrated is not going to change my mind. The neck-dive was also a thing I didn't like about it. If I used a solid/state, or digital system, I might try one out, but why change your whole set-up to suit just one guitar. I agree that this looks better than some I've seen.
I've owned this thinking itd be just a non gloss version of the SG standard.. but boy was I wrong. The Standard has a totally different feel and vibe. Good decent guitar for the price nonetheless.
I own two SG Standards, a special, a Junior , a 61 Standard and a tribute. I bought the tribute for alternate tunings and slide. In some ways I prefer the tribute because of the satin. The only thing I don’t prefer is the rounded 50’s neck. I prefer the slim taper. I’ve seen Indonesian import guitars from Reverend and PRS that cost more than the SG tribute. I’d take the tribute.
@@intheblues i bought a new (to me) used 15 year old 2007. I hear ya! I’d rather have a new guitar instead of a car. Love your playing and your reviews-keep em coming!!!!! From one lefty to another
MAn those necks are so fckn thin, i was shocked how cool the Guitar acutally feel.. Even tho im not a fan of SGs, i might even buy one... I hate to say it but i like the SG neck more than on my 70s FLyng V and LP Standard...
The pickup being set low as a negative is a bit much and smells of 'let's find some completely benign negative to mention to appear rigorous'. It's a basic set-up preference, not a problem with the guitar. How about telling us about the QC on this particular guitar, which is usually the main gripe people have with Gibson? Or comparing it to alternatives in its price range?
There are affordable Gibsons with a full gloss finish. Painting is the most expensive part of manufacturing an electric guitar. A Les Paul Special and an SG are functionally the same guitar.
@@InjectBleach Gibson thought they were so similar, the SG was originally called a Les Paul. A few millimeters difference in pickup location does not magically transform it. An SG sounds the same as Les Paul Special.
@@BillSams-zq3iu I never claimed they sounded identical.. Get an SG Special, if it’s a huge difference to you. Point is, you don’t have to spend much to the Gibson tone.
To me. you didn't seem as comfortable playing it - perhaps you're more a Fender guy? Cool review though - I love my Gibson 61 SG - heavier than normal which means no neck dive :)
I’ve got one little Gibson, SG Faded 2017 T WB. Same pickups as that Tribute, more of an open pore finish on the body. I bought it back in 2018, not a good time for Gibson back then. A sad misshapen poor thing it was out of the box. Someone at Gibson had gone off for a coffee and let a PLEK machine chew on the neck !!! After Grand Lutemeister Ed Purcell had worked his magic upon it, it was reborn whole once more … Nice little SG it is now. My neck pickup is quite low, not flush like the one in the video though. The maple neck on mine is stained to match the ‘walnut’ stain on the mahogany body. I’m cool with ‘Cherry Red’ Gibsons but I had a sentimental reason for wanting a brown one.
The Gibson standard Tribute Sg is 98% the exact same Sg as the Gibson standard Sg..all the same electronics.. hardware.. body..Nut.. Rosewood fretboard.. both have Nitrocellulose finishes one is satin Nitrocellulose but both serve the same exact purpose and wear off quickly..both also have the exact same 490s pickups..it has a plus with the maple neck..so this was a Gibson marketing con job.. plain and simple.. GIBSON standard tribute Sg $1,300... Gibson standard Sg..$1,799.. where's the $500 difference? There isn't any...
Personally, I feel it looks kind of ugly. Don't like the look of the neck joint going into the body. Never like the natural look on solid body guitars. Save that for acoustics. Your jam track was awesome, especially considering how awkward SGs are generally to play.
Are you a fan of the Tribute Series SG or LP? I really dig this guitar and it's one of the more affordable options from Gibson.

I bought my 60s SG Tribute in worn white about 2 yrs ago for $500. It has the small pickguard and Keep it it tuned down 1/2 step
I've owned this thinking itd be just a non gloss version of the SG standard.. but boy was I wrong. The Standard has a totally different feel and vibe.
Good decent guitar for the price nonetheless.
Sky Music is the best ! Thank you ❤
I love the barebones look of this model. It suits the SG style guitar perfect.
Never liked the batwing pickguard.
Here I was THINKING you were an SG hater! \m/ Rockin'!
I have an SG Faded and most people think that it is my most versatile guitar with the 490R and 490T pickups.
Is this model head heavy? That’s my biggest gripe with SGs. Second SG complaint is whippy neck. How is it in this respect?
I wish it had trap inlays like the Les Paul Tribute. Also wish it came in ebony!
Those tones are meaty, seriously every time I hear and SG they are just tone machines.
Got one and love it.
I could swear that you've already reviewed one of these. Maybe I'm just thinking of the les paul video you mentioned.
Wow! A 6lbs 11oz Gibson! Must have mad neck dive. I would be tempt to add a lead weight at the bottom strap button to encounter balance it.
You make this sound immense.
Do you know if the pickups are long or short leg?
Not long ago these were 750 bucks new.
I could really do with an album of your jam tracks to listen to…!
Nice pathfinder!!!!
haha. It's an old Jeep, but thanks :) A new Pathfinder is waaay out of my budget.
@@intheblues i bought a new (to me) used 15 year old 2007. I hear ya! I’d rather have a new guitar instead of a car.
Love your playing and your reviews-keep em coming!!!!!
From one lefty to another
Thanks Shane 😊
Love this guitar... maybe my favorite?
Can you compare it to the Epiphone SG 1961? I think it is a little bit than this SG tribute
got me one of these…it crunchez well
Id end up leaning forward all the time like Angus young.
So this is how you YT guys do your goofy thumbnails. 😉🤣 That was funny.
Was that a little silver chair? Nice!
Have you done the Artist SG?
I don't think so, no. I'll see if they have a lefty :)
The neck dive was mentioned right before that. There's not much of a downside of this feel and tone-wise. Rock on.

How difficult is it to find left-handed strings, and straps?😂 It sounds pretty good to me. I love my SG, they are fantastic guitars.
After playing an SG, I seriously have a hard time going back to chunkier, heavier guitars.
I do prefer a satin neck
Sounds legit
@@BillSams-zq3iu functionality the same has a very different meaning than identical. Go outside
Those pickups are Alinco ll magnets not ceramic.
To me. you didn't seem as comfortable playing it - perhaps you're more a Fender guy? Cool review though - I love my Gibson 61 SG - heavier than normal which means no neck dive :)
Neck profile?
Maple neck is gonna add weight...
After Grand Lutemeister Ed Purcell had worked his magic upon it, it was reborn whole once more …
Nice little SG it is now.
My neck pickup is quite low, not flush like the one in the video though.
The maple neck on mine is stained to match the ‘walnut’ stain on the mahogany body.
I’m cool with ‘Cherry Red’ Gibsons but I had a sentimental reason for wanting a brown one.
Is there any bad gear in your videos.
I don't review a lot of junk for clicks like other channels but I list the pros and cons at the end of my videos, just like this one.
