    Hello dear Simon, thanks again for this precious video about overwintering Treeferns. Well, since it is my first winter with my new Treeferns, which grew sooo tremendously well this summer, I am now well prepared for the forthcoming winter.
    My two big Dicksonia antarticas are now wrapped in several layers of insulating materials. Firstly I mounted an irrigation hose into the crown and fixed it, before I started to wrap the crown with fleece and insulation materials.
    It now looks like a bit like a tall snowman ( guess 3,5m ?) but I am very happy I did it before the first frost period arrives, which might be coming soon.
    All other Treeferns are in my Greenhouse already. One Cyathea felina is still developing a huge new frond. It is unbelievable, how fast this species grow frond after frond. Guess I had 3 or 4 this summer all taller than 2m. It’s an amazing plant.
    Well that’s all for tonight.
    Hope you are well and enjoy this awesome fall colours in your garden.
    Keep well
    Kind regards
    Uwe

      Hi Uwe and thanks for getting in touch. Good luck with your overwintering this year. From your description you seem to have everything in place. All I would say is avoid watering during freezing conditions but don't forget to continue watering in milder periods. I would love a Cyathea felina but it will be too cold for it here and I won't have room for it in the greenhouse. Maybe its is something I will take on in the future! Kind regards, Simon

    Hello sir. Ive just subed to your channel, i find it very entertaining and informative. As for tree ferns , i can understand your frustration with the way some people think they fend for themselves!!. They are my favorite plant , and over the last eight years have a total of 13, ranging from 1 ft to 9 ft, and they all have a fantastic dispay of fronds. As i live in kent (sittingbourne) our climate has been very mild over last few years. I usually put hand fulls of oak leaves in the crown with a small piece of fleece on top lightly tied to stop wind and birds moving it. I fleece about the top couple of foot of trunk and wrap some sacking round as well. Ive never had a problem, and always have a back up supply ready just in case🥶 . Take care looking foward to some more vids👍. All the best. Steve.

      Hi Steve, and thanks for the sub. We really appreciate those. You have done well to collect 13 specimens. If you have an effective management system in place for overwintering, then I generally don't suggest changing it, but hopefully, you found something useful on the video. Kind regards Simon

    Thank you Simon, brilliant info as always. I also love the Dicksonia. I've had mine for over 35 years. Cover it with fleece every winter and it's doing great. I only have the one unfortunately!

      Wow, 35 years is amazing! You must have bought it in the first few years of them coming over. Well done for maintaining it so well. Simon 🙂

      Hello O'Hare, and thank you for your support. We have only been running the channel for a couple of years, so we are still quite small. So any extra support we get from our viewers is very much appreciated. Yes, I watch Jungle George's channel. Have you come across Yorkshire Chris yet? We are all in the same kind of genera. Kind regards, Simon

    Really informative as usual. I was interested in your comments about using tap water rather than rain. Do you use tap water on everything?

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I used to use rain water out the waterbutt, but then I started getting fungal infections due to waste leaves at the bottom of the water butt. Yes, I should have cleaned it before using it, but due to the value of the plants lost, I just use water from the tap. That was when the garden was newly planted, I don't need to water so much now. Great advice sir! I would really like a few medium sized tree fern...one or two foot of trunk is fine...but the prices!! I do remember being in homebase years ago and they were selling five foot trunk ones for £150....that now seems like another universe!! Why didn't I buy...what a dope

      Thanks, Bobmac, for your supportive comment. I completely agree that tree fern prices no longer seem to be connected to reality. I don't know what has happened, but perhaps one of our viewers can shed some light on this. Simon

      Hi Mandy and I am pleased to hear that your tree fern has improved. Regarding tap water, it should come out of the tap sterilised. At least it does here in the UK, so you wouldn't need to treat it further. Simon

    Hi there I’ve got a baby tree fern with no trunk yet still in a pot ,during winter do I cover the pot aswell with fleece

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I would Jenni, but depending on how cold it gets where you are I would also put it in a greenhouse. Don't forget to water and fertiliser, I go into detail on this in another video. Thanks for getting in touch, kind regards Simon.

    Hi, I was wondering what month do you wrap your ferns for the winter?

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Barry, and thanks for your question. I don't go by the month, but as soon as temperatures start to regularly drop to below 3 to 4 degrees Celsius, I will put on the protection. I hope that helps, Simon

    Hey, do you still keep feeding them during winter?

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Thibault. Yes I do, I use a liquid soluble fertiliser such as miracle grow, usually feed once a month using the regular or more diluted dose depending on how cold it is. Don't apply in freezing conditions, wait for temperatures to be above about 3-4 degrees Celsius. Simon
