  • You thought I would hate this gun, a gun that probably shouldn’t divide opinion as much as it does! BUT given the reliability issues in early 828 game guns I was prepared to leave this review handing out thumbs downs.
Jonny gives this gun a bench review and then pops out with Ant to put a good few shots through it.
    Enjoy!

A good review. I bought an 828U Sport in May 2019, travelling some distance to buy one with decent wood too. It is without doubt a lovely gun to shoot for all the reasons described. I put around 10,000 carts through mine before an unresolvable issue appeared. On squeezing the trigger there would be a 'click', the cart primer wasn't struck - target lost. It went back to GMK twice to be fixed under warranty where they replaced a coil spring that had failed - it didn't sort the problem. Traded it for a Blaser F3 Vantage and cash. Loved the 828U Sport - just think it escaped R&D before it was finished. I wrote to Benelli direct to describe the problem but didn't get a reply, not even an acknowledgement.

Right around 10k, I started getting light strikes as well. Benelli USA was happy to warranty repair it, 10,000 strikes is definitely when I replace any striker in any other gun, so it's not really out of line with what I would expect with a striker fired gun

I watched this video several months ago and completely forgot about it. Today I was randomly thinking about it and I could not for the life of me remember the channel or video title. Just searched “sporting shotgun”, scrolled for a bit, and BAM found it! So glad I was able to find the video and the channel. Nice looking/performing sport shotgun! New subscriber, great reviews and other content. Much love from Texas!

It has always blown my mind how a finely made sporting or hunting double barrel still to this day commands such high dollar. They’re works of art and aren’t exactly the simplest thing to make, but I find it awesome that a design as old as a double barrel shotgun is usually made into one of the most expensive guns that you could buy at a standard gun shop.

    Loved this review !
I purchased this gun last year July 2020 as a gift to myself for my 50th birthday !
I’m a huge lover of Benelli - I have a Sport 2 - wooden model 32” semi auto and love it to death !
Wanted an over under and the 828U Sport was my only direction - yes expensive, but unique and original .
So, a few things ... A - this gun is amazing , hands down . The options of weight balance, canting adjustments and trigger adjustments are amazing ! For me , out of the box everything was perfect . AA wood is another 10 👍’s up .
The image of the gun on the sporting clay field is great !
    I’ve upped my game by 10% .
    So, there’s a few downsides ...
I’m a cleaner of my guns after shooting . I want my guns to last a lifetime , so I clean after every shoot ...
This gun is very , very easy to break down and clean .... for the most part .
The major issue I’ve had after 7000+ shells I’d that the extractors stopped working .
( My 828U Sport ) is currently in Maryland at Benelli USA to be fixed -
The Extractors are a very complicated, precise bunch of working parts , and I didn’t want to get ahead of my gunsmithing ability to try to fix while the gun was under warranty.
I did a lot of “ trying to fix “ this issue , with no success ..
To me , the issue is how Benelli utilizes the pressure to extract spent shells .
On the 828U / Sport . You’ll see a little puncture / divot in the spent shell ( not great for reloads )
I think that little piece of plastic , over time , clogs up the extractor system .
It’s very hard to get into the those little areas to clean out .
( mind you - I didn’t realize this to start . If I had known , I would have focused on that area to clean after every shoot )
So, Benelli has been very very cool , they are cleaning and fixing the issue , all under warranty!
I can’t wait to get this shotgun back and get back into it !
For now , my Benelli Sport 2 is rocking and rolling !
Love the brand / company / and I’ll always be a true Benelli fan !
Please , if you have questions about the shotgun reach out - sensorynerve@gmail.com
    Cheers
    Rob

Nice looking gun, Jonny as you know me being a traditionalist this gun just tics all the right boxes for something untraditional, modern and not trying to take a gun from stock and “updating” it to be something it isn’t. I wouldn’t mind taking one for a spin!! Thanks again for wonderful content!!

I think I want this to be my second gun, primarily because it is mechanically interesting and different, it is divergent with its cocking, strikers, ejection, lock up, and stocking, not just different design choices but in my opinion better choices.
17:30 Sounds good, shotguns are all about just watching a target and pointing, optimally there is almost no thought involved, some thought in the pre-shot routine, none in the shot itself, the less effort the better.

Not my bag, but I love the shimmable stock. With far less access to shotgun fitting in the USA, the most practical solution for non adjustable guns is adding adjustable combs and buttplates. That’s not cheap either. Shims and different length pads are a godsend on my semi autos, would have appreciated that option on my break actions.

I own an 828U and yes my fore-end has a slight crack that’s developed, but it will be warranted.

I’ve had 2 of these and all of them have had receiver issues. Snapping metal pieces near the nuckles and receiver hinge. Both 828s were brand new and taken care of just like my Perazzi MX3-B SCO. I’ve been in contact with Benelli USA multiple times and they have replaced the firearms twice now. The issue they have found was that there is a heat treat issues with the “two” receivers I’ve had. This is kinda coincidental given that I’ve had two receiver changes and both had sheered off metal within the first 250 rounds each.

I love both guns in reading about them but would love your side be side review. I have not been able to shoot either due to no in-store availability. One must buy them first, sight unseen, without shooting or holding them pre-purchase.

I recently purchased one, and despite my reservations I have found it to be sleek, reliable and very easy to shoot. I opted for a 32" barrel version and I have no regrets. Having said that, it did become a little cartridge fussy on one particular brand, and after consulting the cartridge manufacturer they acknowledged that they had an issue with their tooling making the cartridges slightly oversized. I have run around 5k cartridges through mine and other than the one issue it hasn't missed a beat, don't be put off by the previous versions, this model is a different animal.

It is revelatory to apply rotational inertia (moment of inertia) to sporting devices like rods and firearms. That's why an end-weighted gun doesn't feel as natural. As you attempt to move it, it resists more than the same weight gun with the mass distributed evenly.

Jonny, how is the recoil on this gun. I know the newer ones are heavier, more like the usual suspects. I love the feel and fit of this gun for me but it has been absolutely trashed over here in America but I think most of those came when it had the light alloy receiver and was a light gun.
How was your experience with the recoil and what shot were you using: ie, speed and weight?

I've owned the 828u field gun with 26" barrels for several years. I bought it to hunt upland birds. I loved the gun in the yearly season hunts but once the weather got cold I hated the gun. I just couldn't get the safety off reliably while wearing gloves. I added a button on top of the safety selector to give it a bit more height and everything is great again. I do love the gun now. However it you aren't able, or willing, to modify the safety for use with gloves I think you might be frustrated. I am considering buying a Sport version as the light weight field gun really knocks me around while shooting sporting clays. I also find the 26" barrels to lively for good control for target shooting.

I hope that most cheap guns go to this semi-auto-like buttstock, it would make the wood-to-metal fit simpler. I am not sure it will happen though, cheap guns try to imitate more expensive guns, in appearance especially, if the more expensive guns stay traditional I think the cheaper ones will too.
Also, I forgot to mention that it is basically a jaeger breech type system within an o/u, which is majestic.

I've got one , and a DT10 and a few others. Is the 828U as good as a DT10 for just clays only , no, but it's the most pointable, adjustable and easy to shoot gun I own. The trigger is like most Benelli autos, a bit crude, lacks the hand finished feel and sophistication but on a shotgun with this design brief, in keeping. I really love mine. Don't write these off without trying one.

The Feb 22, 2018 review of the 828u was critical of the gun, have the problems been solved in the 828u Sport?

    • @Beejmiles
      @Beejmiles 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Spot on question JK. Quotes from that review include "I'm not going to stock this gun new anymore, I've been stung too many times", "The trigger unit fell out of the gun after 10-30 shots, that's not great", "Sometimes it just doesn't eject, sometimes it just doesn't switch over... double discharge issues". This Sporter review and the gushing all over it without addressing if those issues have been addressed (or if they are even issues for the tens of thousands of these that have likely been made to date) is beyond an oversight. Are they are stocking this gun new for sale then? If so, has the Field model be brought back into the fold? If one watches the two reviews back to back you'd swear they were reviewing entirely different guns.

Do you think a movie about clay shooting could get more people interested in the sport?
Maybe do a Happy Gilmore knock-off and Jonny could play the role of Shooter McGavin. Some young punk comes in dressed like a slob, shooting a battered old Baikal, and just dominates every competition. Jonny, irritated by this, ends up going head-to-head with him at the British Open.
You may as well be printing money with a story like this.

Ha. Maybe Ant is hiding a Baikal somewhere? Preferably with a taped on comb riser.
And after scratching out his first big win with the Baikal, Benelli swoops in with a sponsorship, giving him a new rock-n-roll 828U persona, which ruffles as many tweed feathers as the old hard scrabble one.

"I'm not going to stock this gun new anymore, I've been stung too many times", "The trigger unit fell out of the gun after 10-30 shots, that's not great", "Sometimes it just doesn't eject, sometimes it just doesn't switch over... double discharge issues". They seem to have ironed out the bulk of the issues. It still has some issues as a design but I think people are aware of these walking into the purchase now (if that is acceptable, although people but plenty of other things in life that are less reliable but more cool)
In hindsight I think my utterly floor level expectations going into this experience probably make me sound more excited than i may have been had this gun already been on a pedestal!

Maybe I missed this but, are they still making them out of aluminum ? I'm sure they shoot well enough, I have a Benelli Performance Shop Super Sport and love it but... being that it's mostly aluminium and plastic... I worry it isn't going to last long.
PS- I had a better than average year trading stock so I bought the ZOLI 175th anniversary model. It looks great and feels great in the hand but, I haven't shot it yet. If you can get a hold of one, I'd like to know what you think Jonny.

In my opinion the 828U is the most sophiscated O/U Concept since a few decades. My best Friend bought one (the 828U in silver, with Aluminium System, 30" Barrels) in 2019 and he is absolute happy with the gun (primarly he used it for trap). I tried it often and i also like it. Lightweight, easy to handle, easy to shoot, versatile and the trigger ist realy ok. The only reason why i dont buy one it is my Miroku MK38 Trap. This Gun is my personal O/U love. Greetings from Germany.

My 828U opened during the shot yesterday. Had some minor problems in the past 2,5 years. First the rail came of, then it did not switch inbetween 2 shots. Was quite happy with my 828U. But this is a different story. It opened 4 times in the shot. Already checked the springs of the locking bolts. Nothing dirty, nothing broken. Also the corresponding holes are clean and sharp.
I am very disappointed Benelli. This cannot happen after only 2,5k shots in Trap and regular cleaning and maintenance.
