I agree the fruit trees berry's,plums and so on are so important too give them the vitality going into the lean time in the fall because you never know how lean it will be and it is definitely leaner than it once was especially when we're trying too increase wild turkey numbers....and I agree trees are so important and a little overlooked.....Great guest....Great episode.....😊

When I was in my early 20's I planted 625 seedlings in one day. Most of them died. Today I plant no more than 75 seedlings (3 bundles of 25) over the course of a weekend, and I have a better survival rate. I plant them where I have done TSI or where I have done some edge feathering. I also like to plant shrubs like, eastern wahoo, American plum, false indigo, ninebark and various dogwood (grey, rough leaf) spices for diversity. I know Dudley mentioned shingle oak, but that is an aggressive oak spice in my area, so I have to kinda keep it in check. But I must say, the turkey numbers around my property are definitely down.

Great to hear that you're figuring out what works for your property! Hopefully those turkey numbers get back on the rise soon 🤞

I'm glad you touched on the survival of tree plantings and I also have second hand luck when I plant trees just alot of them die no matter what type they are...maybe we should make it a point that trees are one thing that are in constant need just because of that happening and new people to planting trees should follow suit and plant an average instead of bulk like was discussed and be happy and observe as too what trees survived in what area and then next time you plant you have an idea too plant that type tree in that area and so forth......and if you find you have a high survival rate you can maybe choose another tree type to give it a shot with........but yea trees can at times be disheartening......😊

Absolutely, I found planting less is more. I can take better care and find that I have 100% survival.

New tree farm owner's lessons learned on planting trees in South Mississippi. My farm is 45 min from my house and i'm on year 4. I plant 60-100 trees a year. I don't have money to pay someone to plant so I do it all my self. Bare root seedlings have same mortality rate as big trees that cost way more, ~10%. July- Sept I water once a week on days off (14/14 work schedule). I shoot for 1 gal/wk/tree. My neighbors didn't and thet lost 95-100% of their new trees. I have a 80 gal vinyl water bag on sxs and just fill gal jug. The best spots provide shade late afternoon in summer. If you cant get afternoon shade use burlap to shade from sun. Use 5' tree tubes and 3-5' weed mat or old card board with mulch. Trees in tubes grow much faster than without. Do not use harwood stakes. They will rot break fall and take tube to ground. This kills the tree most of the time unless you catch it in a week or so. Cheapest stakes are rebar or fiberglass stakes. If you're lucky enough to find scrap pvc or conduit it makes great stakes. T post can damage roots when pulled and cost too much. Wheb clearing areas to plant leave enough room between brush and new tree to mow around easily the first 3-4 years. unless you want to commit a majority of your free time maintaining them or spend the money for irrigation, dont plant more than 20 tree a year. It now takes me 2 days just to water. Plum trees and mulberry are the easiest fruit trees to establish. Nativ nurseries tress are consistently healthy bare root trees but also propagate your own to plant with them. Pickup acorns hickory and native fuit seeds anywhere you find them. Put in soil covered with wire to protect from squires and in spring time you will have a ton of free seedlings. Trees that are grown from just acorn or seeds put in the spot you want them to grow will have much stronger roots than transplanted trees. You dont even beed to water them through the year.
