Nobody answered your question so here I am two years later 😁. This is a tradition of chasing evil spirits for luck, health and good harvest during the year. All regions have different costumes and the tradition is performed either before new year or around this time, February. Men dress as women, women as men, rituals of ploughing are performed and everyone and everything is made fun of - the church, the state, marriage - everything goes for that one day. What you see most about this ritual though are the masked men from around the entire country. Those are mostly unmarried young men who dress is scary costumes with a lot of bells and they make as much noise as they can to chase away bad spirits and bring good fortune and good harvest. A part of the tradition is to tap people on the back with branches waved into round shapes and decorated with coins, popcorns, beads and colorful threads and ribbons. The masks and clothes are just outstanding.
