In the 1940s & 50s, I grew up beside the N&W railroad and the tug river, between Matewan and Williamson, Sprigg was the place, a magical place and time really... The massive stream locomotives would pass my house and enter the tunnel with a roar, the train whistle was at times... long and lonesome, especially at night and in the wee hours. Looking across the tug at the moon lit mountains on the Kentucky side... was nothing less than one would imagine heaven to to be like. It was, and is, a magical place of natural beauty, especially during summer storms, and the heavy winter snows.... Almost Heaven West Virginia & Kentucky, oh yes... I reckon so. There was poverty, struggle and strife, the very things that can kill or make you stronger, all were shared in equal proportion in those beautiful, majestic hills of Southern West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. What a privilege it was.... God is good, indeed he is! It was the inspiration for teachers, poets, preachers and bored kids, such as myself, to play hooky... in exchange for paddlings at school and switchings at home. There is a golf-course where we caddied for a dollar or two, when lucky.... Memories to last a life time... and so they have.
