This song is such sweet deception. There's this catchy, stylish, pop-fortyish, uptempo music with a great dance-friendly rhythm - steady drums, cool bass line, sizzling (but not searing) lead guitar... And then, those lyrics... Those dig-right-down-into-your-chest-and-expose-your-heart lyrics. Words that are the antithesis of the bright-and-cheerful music. Words that paint this beautiful, poignant, pain-drenched picture of a life and a love that were lost. What rare artistry...
According to JB, "In the Shape of a Heart" reflects his feelings about the passing of Phyllis Major, his wife, who died of a drug overdose in March 1976.
This is truly brilliant song writing and musical artistry. Takes me back to 1986 when I was 27 years old. I love this song, so much emotion, love and turmoil. Art like this no longer exists, what a shame art in our society has deteriorated so much.
The more I listen, the more I understand. I live outside of L.A. and I don't know why it took me so long! Such powerful words. Glad I got to see him a year ago with James Taylor.
This still gives me chills. I lived thru a relationship just like this. I cant believe i survived it. The emotional twist between two people can sometimes just not be fixable. Thirty years later i am grateful i learned from it, appreciated the love we created and was able to move on without him.
As I watch this, it reminds me of how we grew up together, my brother’s band and him all played together. As I looked at it, he’s playing a guitar the same color of the car I built for him now I know he wanted that color for Phyllis.❤
Superb. One of his BEST ever...I could listen to it over and over. Its written about his first wife, Phyllis, and its as great NOW as it was in 1986. Love your sound, Mr. Jackson Browne ,...its REAL music..since 1970's something....
One of the best singer songwriters of the 70s . I still think the Eagles stole Take It Easy from Jackson it was such a huge hit and Jackson wrote it and later recorded it. If anyone deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice it is this man. Awesome music 100 years from now he is a big part of rock history. He did the world such a big favor by singing some of his songs and not standing in the shadows and letting other bands take all the credit and all the glory that goes with these outstanding songs. He is definitely one of my favorite rock artists of all time and forever.
So my generation doesn't know of Jackson...im a 1983 baby but He's my absolute favorite. Was playing pool the other night.. live artist (1guy but he was good..chris stapleton type.) was playing 'take it easy' and said it was eagles after. I asked if he'd take requests. Said yes, "OK can you play doctor my eyes? You do know what you just played was a jackson Browne song, right?: He said," who?" Lol also sad.
@@kristenwoods8158 Gregg Allman played These Days on a solo album, another Jackson Brown song. People who do not know what a huge talent Jackson has for songwriting and singing really missed the boat on that one
The first time I heard it, the words knocked me back like cold water waking you up. It so perfectly fit the explanation of what I had lived through. What many of us experience in a love relationship. I can't explain how it helped me heal the broken bones of my heart. I was going to survive. I could drop it all into the wall.
I have a ruby necklace that I wear because of the great importance, Your words really says it all. It is oval not in the shape of a heart, but just below it a loving heart that beats. This was the first song I ever hear you sing. I missed out on the time when you were a household name. There are other songs I like very much. Life changes on a heart beat.😢
song writing u don't hear much these days, I appreciate Jackson's song writing its straight from the heart, we need more of his songs xoxo Jackson! much appreciated!
Well, I have to admit "JB"s never on my radar. That is the great thing about TH-cam, I can rediscover great music that I may have missed!!!!! He is a great Songwriter!!! :)
Speaking so loud to me my whole life since it’s release❤️🫂♥️. I Loved this from my first hearing it!❤. So many phases in my life, these lyrics meant different things!🙏🤲
Written for his first wife who committed suicide. He found her in a hotel room after his show. (My interpretation from reading some of his biographies). One of his best.
A break up. The album was released while he was out of town. He knew I wouldn’t be there when he came back. On the stand beside the bed I left a bracelet with a pendent in the shape of a heart and this song cued up on the cassette tape. No hate or hurt. Just sadness that it was gone. The song helped - a lot.
If you like this one or Sky Blue and Black, look up Just Like Forever. Only found it here on TH-cam. It is another real gem. Don’t think he has ever recorded it.
its on DVD and itunes now. you can order through Jackson's website or pretty much any major online store (amazon, etc. its even on Netflix now I beleive) it's well worth looking into- great preformances as well as some commentary by Browne and others

Jackson Browne is a timeless artist every song that he has done is like a movie you just never want it to end.
From my 17 years old til now 63 years old always with Jackson Browne ❤ ♥ 💖 💕
Me too 😊

Great example of Jackson’s mastery as a songwriter / storyteller. One of the absolute greatest ever.
I never ever heard this song and I love Jackson Browne! GREAT song. Such an amazing singer/songwriter! We are lucky to have him.
One of the most underrated singers..ever.. So many of his songs cut right to the core of who you are or how you feel.
This is truly brilliant song writing and musical artistry. Takes me back to 1986 when I was 27 years old. I love this song, so much emotion, love and turmoil. Art like this no longer exists, what a shame art in our society has deteriorated so much.
U have to wonder how cathartic this song is for JB every time he sings it.
something so down to earth about this guy....his voice is so very smooth and natural....easy to love it...
I forgot how much I loved this 1986!!
Hey..this song 🎵 loves you back brother!

My sentiments exactly. It definitely spoke to me and obviously you and many others. That’s the amazing thing about a great song.
A hauntedly beautiful song.
Brown is iconic...

Fountain of sorrow was written about Joni Mitchell
I don't know why, but this song brings tears to my eyes.
every time.
Me too
It is so touching.
I too dropped a locket into a wall once . . . One of great ensemble sounds in rock history. . .
Goosebumps still after all these years.
Love this song. You see the pain in his eyes when he starts singing.
I'm a Motown fan, but I love this song, very heartfelt

I consider not being in the Rocking Wreck Hall of Fame a mark of distinction. Though he deserves much more recogniton
Really good song by Gregg and Jackson
In my 80

Just a perfect song.
The writing.
The emotion. The depth of connection...
I was 24 when I first heard this. And it changed me.

Is that Valerie Carter on backing vocals? (See 3:12.)

That voice, it's like butt-ah...
Does anyone else hear a slight similarity between JB's vocal tone and Elvis Costello's?
😊
If you'll give me a shout I can tell you where to get it...
