Broody hens are worth their weight in gold!!! Whenever people complain about them I say, “I’ll buy her!”. They have a better hatch rate than an incubator and teach babies about life!!
I agree we live off grid and buying store chicks is a little harder for us. I did sneak 2 chicks under a mama hen and she raised those chicks. That’s an option for us
Came here today to re-watch the video, because one of my banty hens FINALLY went broody. :) So much nicer to let the hen brood the chicks once they hatch, than to have to set up lights and cages for chicks.
I had a Cochin that was the best broody hen I ever had. She sat any eggs. Her biggest clutch of her eggs and other hens were 22! I couldn't believe she could cover that many. All hatched except 1❤️
I remember my Grandma warning me as a young child to stay away from the brooding geese, but of course, I didn't. They about ate me up! Good brooders are EVERYTHING on a farm! Especially with the price of birds these days and you don't know what's in them!
We got started on our chickens last year and purchased 4 young hens. One of the hens became broody almost right away. I have been having to get her off the nest twice a day just so she will eat and drink. Finally we decided to get some more chics in hopes of getting her a rooster so she can have her some babies! Bless her heart! She knows that's what she is supposed to be doing.
A farmer friend of mine buys chicks each year, in 2020 one summer day she heard baby chicks chirping so she went to see and lo and behold she had 10 new babies, and some how her neighbor, had a rooster that visted her Hen, was funny to hear the story and her hen was a great mom.
Patara I want to share something with you and everyone remember this....birds fly to water at night, and away from water in the morning. So if you are out trying to get somewhere and need water. That's how you will find water, watch the birds night and morning
I agree with totes. I've picked up totes at the dump just because they don't have a lid. I use chicken wire, frame it with two by twos into a door looking frame. Fits perfect and reusable. I also use totes for injured animals and kittens being born.
Our daughter was about seven when she decided to put fertile chicken eggs in the nest of a wild turkey. A few weeks later, that turkey momma was so proud of her chicks. We supposed they were bi-lingual, not kidding lol. She raised them until we brought them back to the barn.
Thank you for explaining how brooding hens work! For 20 years I was a USDA inspector. We slaughtered and inspected 600,000 chickens a day. I really did not get involved with the rest of the process, but you make it very interesting!
My hubby made me a coop back in 2009 for our first chickens. Silkies 8L 'x 8'w x10' H and I had a broody charcoal hen and a Buff hen everytime other hens laid eggs...they would take them.... lol so we would make our chickens a nursery...lol.. We always closed off with a 3x6 part of the coop for them with a home made 6 ft gate till "their" eggs hatched and when they were about 2 weeks old we would open the gate for moms and babies. My hubby made me a candler and that was so awesome to candle the eggs...life is beautiful. I still have some old girls that are Polish. I enjoyed watching your chickens coming out. When my Rooster crows he does the get smart theme song...lol ....love the video ...see ya on the next one !
I had a first time broody hen who, a week before they were to hatch, decided to move to another nest of eggs (i was to collect that day) I said "girl, that is not how it works!" I moved the eggs she was brooding under her in her new nest. They ended up hatching and were fine.
I couldn’t get a broody to sit for years and years and finally last year I had two step up. How wonderful to have Mamas raise the chicks instead of me. Certainly are worth their weight in gold.
My chickens are 17 weeks old. I don't have a rooster and don't plan on it because even though I am on 5 acres, I am in a "subdivision" out in the country. I'm not really supposed to have the chicks but I don't care lol. If I ever do get a place more suitable for having more chickens and other farm animals I will surely come back and rewatch all your videos because you are my favorite homesteading channel. Love you Patara!
My black orphington hens are the most broody hens I have. 2 will sit on the same eggs in the same box if I don't split them up. Ms. Margaret is the biggest one, and she went broody without me realizing it, and apparently didn't leave her box to eat. I noticed her comb turning white so I got her out, separated her from all hens and eggs until she got healthy again. As soon as she had more eggs, she was right back at it, so she stays in mama mode. I have a separate stall for her now. I've always used tubs for nesting boxes, so I just moved a fresh one to the empty stall, where she's separated and safe with food and water and give her a few eggs to hatch. I do have to monitor her food, to make sure she eats bc she will stop eating in a quick minute! But she is definitely my best chickie asset. I know anytime I need new chicks, she's up for the job! She also will sit on anyone's eggs, anywhere. She'll let other hens come in and lay, and also let them sit with her on the clutch. So she has to be in solitary lol. Love this info, thanks so much for sharing! I'm letting her hatch some now so we shall see soon!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love that shot of all your chickens coming out of the barn! My ducks just started giving us eggs this week, I’m so thrilled. Can’t wait for our chickens to join the homestead.
Last spring I found one of my hens in my storage closet in the house . she had made a nest out of towels, wash clothes and was sitting on a couple eggs. She must have climbed in a open window or something.
Thanks, Patara! Seems like every time one of our girls goes broody we don't have a rooster. Ugh! One time we added a fertilized egg to one girl's unfertilized clutch so she could actually hatch one. There was no fooling her, though! The next morning that egg was gone, never to be found! 🤣😂
I bought a young turkey couple and Henny has gone broody twice this yr! She just collects everyone's eggs and sits. First time she went broody just 3 wks after I got her home. She's my first truly broody lady. I love it! And while she sits my Tom becomes daddy to all the younger chickens I have 🤣 best buy ever! 😍
I have one Road Island Red in my flock. She's a 2 year old. She goes Broody at least once every 90 days. She sets on everyone's eggs. Haven't had a rooster in a year though.
But one thing for sure is, I just love the fact that you're part native American tribe just like me, Patara. 💞🥰 you're STILL amazing. And I'm "blessed" to have learned and been taught from you.👍
I have three broody hens right now. So tractor supply gave me a gift card for my birthday. So I went ahead and bought a couple chicks for them. I never seen mama so happy
I've got a black Australop sitting on her 2nd clutch this year...getting late in the year for a hatch here, in Alaska. She had 6 in June. Haven't found her nest this time. She is a Houdini when she gets broody, so it's hide and seek.
I don't have chickens yet but hope to... I've learned so much from you that I feel fairly confident to give it a try...I loved feeding them and gathering eggs when I was visiting my grandparents growing up... and knew to not mess with the rooster, but that was it 😋 Thanks for all you do Patara 🤗❤️
I really like the tote idea. I have a broody hen as well. Without a rooster, I have ordered six fertile eggs. Of course, I have my incubator up and running, in case she loses interest. Thank you for the suggestions.
I have a buff that hatched a few not even 3 months ago and she’s gone broody again! Don’t even know what she’s hiding yet. Wasn’t wanting more chicks but I’m going to let her do her thing.
I wonder how and when to introduce her and the baby chicks to the Big flock. One of my new chickens turned out to be a rooster. 5 new girls and 2 four yr great layers. I have high hopes of raising new chicks.
OH, THANK YOU PATARA FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO TODAY!!!! Definitely needed the refresher on broody hens. I have three broody hens right now, plus two broody ducks. One of the hens isn't sitting on her eggs but one of our ducks eggs.
I have a wonderful black austrilope broody hen. We have no rooster so I replace her eggs with duck eggs and she hatches them out. She loves her ducklings and takes excellent care of them. I find the ducks grow up more calm and tame with a hen mama. So cute.
What a great idea. Thank you for sharing the tote brooder set up. Much better than what I've been using. We have a nice incubator, but I'll be the first to say that I get a far better hatch from my broody hens than I do in the fancy box. The chicks hatched by mom are way more healthy and thrive better than those hatched in the incubator. We are heavily dependent upon our chickens on the farm, so we use both methods, but those birds hatched by momma bird then to live and thrive better than the others. Again, thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing that with us. It helps those of us that are curious about these things. I wish I could have chickens. I can't so I live vicariously through folks like you, Patara. ❤
I am lmbo because all I was visualizing is the movie 🎥"The Cowboy Way" during the video .I just Love 💕 Ya Patura .I am elderly disabled and 3 yrs going into this I am alone .I got those folks out of my Life . You guys are my inspiration now !
I had so many broody laying hens fighting over 1 darn nest, I have enough nests for them...they destroyed (and ate) all of the eggs I trying to let them hatch. So I bought more layer chicks. I'm going to build a new coop for mamas next year.
I use a car pooper scooper to clean up the poop. Just had a broody girl on 18 eggs!! Have another on 8 eggs. 6 have hatched so far, that may be it🤷🏻♀️
Broody hens are the best! Ours would also lay and hatch our extra duck and goose eggs as well. She would get so mad when the ducklings would hop in the mud puddles. She didn’t understand that duck and geese love water.
God Bless , I really appreciate All you do , from you down to earth talks to sharing farm life . There’s always a wonderful message if you just listen ! 🙏🥰
Great video, Patera! Would you please consider making one more video on how to raise chick with a mamma and how to introduce them to the flock? Love your channel!💜

Broody hens are worth their weight in gold!!! Whenever people complain about them I say, “I’ll buy her!”. They have a better hatch rate than an incubator and teach babies about life!!
I also have a few broody hens but 2 of them hatched their chicks now. One is still setting and waiting for the big day 💞💞
Less hatch problems and after issues than with incubators
I have a silkie bantam that stays broody. She will even go to other nests and roll another hens eggs to her nest.
I agree we live off grid and buying store chicks is a little harder for us. I did sneak 2 chicks under a mama hen and she raised those chicks. That’s an option for us
I have 2 broodies and no rooster, yet. I bought a male chick about a month and a half ago.😄
Came here today to re-watch the video, because one of my banty hens FINALLY went broody. :)
So much nicer to let the hen brood the chicks once they hatch, than to have to set up lights and cages for chicks.

Hahaha I did the same thing! My grandma warned me & I learnt my lesson. 😂😂😂
😂😂😂Oh I learned this lesson myself on my uncles farm. I ended up a hemlock while she circled below
We got started on our chickens last year and purchased 4 young hens. One of the hens became broody almost right away. I have a broody hen that went broody at almost exactly one year old. She's hatched chicks three times for us.
She's a great mama, and a keeper!!
Patara I want to share something with you and everyone remember this....birds fly to water at night, and away from water in the morning. So if you are out trying to get somewhere and need water. That's how you will find water, watch the birds night and morning
Thankyou for the knowledge.
All the chickens coming out of the coop remind me of a clown car... it is so cool to watch them.
Patara, i get goose bumps every time I see your animals.
Especially the other day when that butterfly landed on your hat.
Love You, Cin

Getting ready for canning class! Tonight is pulled BBQ pork😋
Sounds delicious!
I got lucky enough to have a broody chicken, duck, and turkey at the same time. Nine babies, one didn't make it, but still eight fuzzy blessings
We have 2 momma's taking care of 12 babies together. Very protective.
My hubby made me a coop back in 2009 for our first chickens. And THIS is why I make sure I have a Buff Orpington roo and hens. Love other breeds! But my buffs are my most reliable broody gals.
My chickens are 17 weeks old. I don't have a rooster and don't plan on it because even though I am on 5 acres, I am in a "subdivision" out in the country. I couldn’t get mine to broody. A dog attacked my boy. But today new life on the little farm 6 new baby chics from the incubator!
I love that shot of all your chickens coming out of the barn! My ducks just started giving us eggs this week, I’m so thrilled. Can’t wait for our chickens to join the homestead.
I don't have hens, but that was really interesting! I didn't realize hens have such personality and such different ones, at that!
Great video. I have nothing to do with chickens and I was glued until the end.
You are a very good educator, Patara.
easy swoop and place, sounds like exactly how they are planning to take us. thanks for the info I have always wondered about this exact subject
Girl! You've got a MESS of chickens!! and THEY ALL look happy and frisky.. GOOD JOB!!
I love how Dan from I aledgely speaks so highly of you. You give me so much peace,God bless you
We had two hens sit on one clutch of 15 eggs. They hatched out 9 babies!
Last spring I found one of my hens in my storage closet in the house . she had made a nest out of towels, wash clothes and was sitting on a couple eggs. She must have climbed in a open window or something.

You might want to find fertile eggs from another local chicken farmer & substitute those for your eggs, if you want chicks.
😂
Great info for beginners, or in my case an old horse who needs a reminder. Thank you
I don’t even have chickens and I thought this is a great informative video! 😁
Great talk. I'm a hatchaholic but I haven't had a broody yet. I'm hoping next year is our year!
But one thing for sure is, I just love the fact that you're part native American tribe just like me, Patara. 💞🥰 you're STILL amazing. And I'm "blessed" to have learned and been taught from you.👍
Same! I recognize that spunky attitude all too well. My mama had it and I do too. It runs strong in the women's side of the family. 🪶🏹🦾
What tribe? 🤗
My mom had a broody. Several hens added to her nest. When they started hatching the hens fought over who got to claim the chicks!
I am sooooo glad you explained a broody hen. I’ve always wondered. Thank you!
I had chickens when I lived in the country. Love them and the sound of roosters announcing morning has broken. My wake up crew!❤️❤️❤️💯
I love that variety of color of eggs! I'm a city girl and didn't know chicken eggs could come in different colors, just beautiful!
Kitty litter scoop for cleaning those broody poops! I like the big metal ones from Chewy. 👍
I have three broody hens right now. So tractor supply gave me a gift card for my birthday. So I went ahead and bought a couple chicks for them. I never seen mama so happy
Hello Patara. Thanks for the lesson on the broody hen. You and your family be well and safe.🥰
Thank. You! New chicken momma here! 😋
My best broody hens are always the Buff Orpingtons 💖
I've got a black Australop sitting on her 2nd clutch this year...getting late in the year for a hatch here, in Alaska. She had 6 in June. Haven't found her nest this time. She is a Houdini when she gets broody, so it's hide and seek.

I really like the tote idea. I have a broody hen as well. Without a rooster, I have ordered six fertile eggs. Of course, I have my incubator up and running, in case she loses interest. Thank you for the suggestions.
We've had chickens off and on for about fourty years. Those broody hens crack me up.
Enjoyed seeing you today and enjoyed the video hope you and your family are all doing well.🙏☺️
I look forward to my chicks going thru this process.... learning something new every day!!
I have a buff that hatched a few not even 3 months ago and she’s gone broody again! Don’t even know what she’s hiding yet. Wasn’t wanting more chicks but I’m going to let her do her thing.

I recently had a hen hatch a duckling and she's a good mama to it. God is good!
Well, now I want to go back and rewatch all of your chicken videos. Thanks for the great info.
I don't even have chickens, but I watched the entire video because it was so interesting. Thanks for the education. Stay curious my friends.
Glad you enjoyed it!
sounds like most women.. we are all broody at some point or another. love the broody lesson and your hat. Blessings
I have a wonderful black austrilope broody hen. We have no rooster so I replace her eggs with duck eggs and she hatches them out. She loves her ducklings and takes excellent care of them. I find the ducks grow up more calm and tame with a hen mama. So cute.
What a timely video....gotta couple o gals gone broody for bout a week now...

This is good info. I never knew this stuff. We typically don't raise hens for eggs but if we wanted to, this video is a good resource. Thank you.
I love a good broody hen! Finding a good rooster is hard too. Good job Miss Clair Betty.
I have one now. She stays in the henhouse about a week now. Ive had chickens about 6 years Thank you for the great idea about the tote
Your chickens are beautiful!!! Enjoyed watching them run out of the coop.
Thank you for sharing that with us. It helps those of us that are curious about these things. I wish I could have chickens. I can't so I live vicariously through folks like you, Patara. ❤

@@JustJoyHowdy It's funny our roo does the same thing but stands way back bocking at the cluckers fighting....he knows not to mess with broody mamas 😄
You answered every question I had !
I'm so thankful for your channel. What great information. Thank you! 😊
I use a car pooper scooper to clean up the poop. Just had a broody girl on 18 eggs!! Have another on 8 eggs. 6 have hatched so far, that may be it🤷🏻♀️

How informative! Go Broody Hens…
God Bless , I really appreciate All you do , from you down to earth talks to sharing farm life . There’s always a wonderful message if you just listen ! 🙏🥰
Your wild, bush broody hens have been adorable. I’ve so enjoyed watching their journeys.❤️🐓
Thank you Patra for the information on Broody Hen.
Love all this information, I've thought about having chickens to raise & produce eggs!!
Thank-you! I love seeing animal videos as I live in the suburbs.
What a pretty goose
Great video, Patera! Would you please consider making one more video on how to raise chick with a mamma and how to introduce them to the flock? Love your channel!💜
Your broody hen is so cute.
Broody hens are the absolute best !
I used totes with lids and a Styrofoam cooler and hay or bedding. Put the cooler inside the tote and cut holes for an entry way place straw inside. I do this to keep critters warm..Yall have great ideas for other uses for these totes! Thanx for sharing! 😊
I enjoyed learning about this Patara. Thank you.
I really like the tote idea
Love it!
I have a broody buff Orpington, about 3 weeks now. I only let eggs stay under her for the past week, no rooster.
I have babies coming in the mail this week. I may see if she'll adopt 10 chicks, or maybe just a few. She's been very zoned in for the past day or two.
I been waiting on this video!!! 🥰I love chickens.
Love Broodies.. Bantams are the greatest little mums.
Thank you I’m new to the whole chicken 🐔 thing 💕
Thank you so much for the video. We are just getting started with a very small flock, learning as we go.
These are the video's I love to see..learning an teaching
Love, love, love my broody hens!
Thank you, thank you, thank you , I have all the books that tell me about all this but they don’t explain it in a way I can understand it like you do…, 😘
Thanks for this this is worth it weight in gold for all watching it !!! That is the thing no extra eggs in there !!!
Loved the video! You did an awesome job explaining the process! 😁
