In this movie, I see pain more than the comic elements. The pain of loneliness, the pain of being left out, the pain of being used by others and the hardships of poverty and starvation. But the movie is also a gentle reminder that none of the pains remain life long. At the end of all the hardships, there's success and happiness awaiting. Do not be afraid to let go of things, if they are meant for us, they will come back to us. A great movie!

This is the first Charlie Chaplin film I watched from start to end. And I can now truly understand why this is considered a comedy classic. Charming humor, memorable characters, unforgettable imagery and it can have some heartfelt and emotional performances, despite being silent.
It is surprising that a film that's almost a century old can still appeal to nearly everyone!

As a person and as a critic, this film will always hold a great deal for me. I first watched this in late June of last year and I was in awe. The serenity of the snow and the way Chaplin directed all of the actors (including himself) to create a not just comedic but deeply heartfelt and intelligent movie will always inspire me to create - whether that’s art, movies - or even to just sit down and appreciate the little things in life, such as love, nature, food etc. All the while, being captivated and immersed by stunning visual symbolism, masterful performances and the power of silence.

Charlie Chaplain proved in his films that pantomime is more expressive than dialogue, that humanity expresses itself through human movements and gestures and facial expressions ... this man wrote the script, composed the music, acted the main role, and directed other actors!! He is a living example for the wholistic artist!

Well, you *can*, but people choose not to…which is unfortunate, but understandable in an era where profits seem to be the driving force behind much of cinema.
While we did get that Oscar-winning modern silent film The Actor a while back, it certainly lacked this sort of surreal physical comedy (if I recall correctly that is; been a while since I’ve seen it, & I was too young at the time to appreciate it). So I retract my statement…you’re probably right!
The one time in recent memory that the medium’s used & is fiscally and critically popular, it’s for a drama. Nothing wrong with that, don’t get me wrong, but just imagining if it’d been a comedy (again, The Artist might’ve employed humor more than I recall) makes me vaguely disappointed…let’s get one of these modern greats to experiment a bit, shall we?

I suppose it’s hard for us today to truly understand how difficult it is to just use expressions, body language and your body’s actions to get over a comedy performance without the use of sound. Today I would say 98-99% in films comedy is all sound based whether it’s a standard joke or in just what the actors are saying. Charlie Chaplin (and Laurel & Hardy too in their silent films) used exaggerated body language & actions to show what’s going on while at the same time using just a simple, subtle look or expression to deliver the silent “punchline” and you just know what they’re saying without words. It’s truly a lost art today and I don’t think a lot of people (especially young people. I’m 39 and I include my parents generation who are their late 60s & early 70s as silent films died out 25-30yrs before they were born) in that truly understand just how good actor he was and other silent film stars

53:39 according to Chaplin, those two old guys were real gold diggers, who accidently appeared during the movie shooting and performed this dance spontaneously. One of them was born in 1828... fascinating!

The silent version is much greater than the talkie version, which was the only one in theatrical release for decades. How lucky people are to be able to access the true silent version again! (And not in poor 16 mm. prints).
