Camera Dynamic Range Explained!

  • The dynamic range of an imaging sensor, what is it? And what does it mean for your final image quality?
    P.S: I realize I didn't annotate the examples while editing, but when the examples are shown, take a close look at the parts of the image where the trees are, and also the skies. That's where most the highlight and shadow details are lost.

      you don't have to, most of measurements are done pretty accurately by dxomark

      Well, bridge cameras are bad at dynamic range anyway, because they have tiny sensor. Also most cameras produce JPEG files have a lot much less dynamic range compared to the RAW files.

    • @zy_cheng
      @zy_cheng  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      To test a camera's dynamic range you do need some specialized equipment, so it's rarely done by the end-user.
      I'm gonna cite this article here: www.cinema5d.com/canon-measured-15-stops-dynamic-range-c300-mark-ii/
      "...at this moment there is no established “standard” to conduct such a measurement (for dynamic range)."
      The authors of the article used a DSC labs XYLA-21 test chart and accompanying software to analyze the dynamic range of the camera.

      i use to usseed Natural profile, take down contrast colour and boosted sharpness it won some dynamic range dont lossing much details. think then have at least 8 stops that way

    What determines the dynamic range of a camera?
    Is it just the sensor? Mostly the sensor?
    Can you improve it to any extent by tweaking the parameters (lens, ISO, exposure, etc.) as you shoot?
    I suppose all cameras will have at least a base-line dynamic range? How is it measured?

    Does Dynamic Range Not Apply To VIDEO?
    THANK YOU

  • @Ejeby
    @Ejeby 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dynamic range = more detail in shadows and highlights (not over saturated whites and blacks); if you don’t have a lot of contrast it’s ok to have a low dynamic range phone camera but if lots of light and shadow, a number system needs to be consulted ;; what changes - focus?

    • @zy_cheng
      @zy_cheng  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Stan, great question! Check out the pinned comment, I've answered a similar question there along with some discussion. To answer your question in short, you can always search for your camera model on the DXOMark database to see what is the dynamic range that they've measured off of the camera. And I'd personally say anything above 10 stops is acceptable.

    • @Juventinos
      @Juventinos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zy_cheng ya no way a camera has 10 stops of dinamic range. the 14stop ev or 15stop ev numbers are bullshit.
      in the DSLR market the most dinamic range is on the nikon d800e with a dinamic range of 9.1ev.
      the sony a7 III has a dinamic range of 8.8EV. and most cameras are in that aria of 8.7,8.8.

    The comment towards the end about the dynamic range being lower in video mode, is Only true for Some brands.
    Canon's DSLR's are about two stops lower - the 5D2 is 11 stops in stills and 9 stops in video.
    However, Pentax don't follow convention, and ignore the IRE limits, encoding from -15 to +125 %IRE, and retain the same dynamic range in video as they have in stills - about 13 stops for the K-01/K-3/K-30, and 14 to 15 stops for the K-1 and KP.
    Then they go and compress it too far and loose sharp detail,....... dagnabbit.

    how can you tell a camera's dynamic range? Is a good rule of thumb, the bigger the sensor size the higher the dynamic range? Mine is a fujifilm x-a3, these dynamic ranges are not seen in the specifications list of my manual.
    Also is this dynamic range compensated for if you shot it as a RAW file and adjusted the highlights and shadows in an editing program to get those details back, thus making the dynamic range of the camera build not matter that much anymore?

    New to photography I was (probably like most) a bit unimpressed by the dynamic range on a dslr (Canon 800d) which I know is a more entry level DSLR but my question is: do better dslr (or mirrorless) cameras offer hugely noticeable difference in dynamic range, or is it one thing that only changes in a minor way as you go up in price (for photography not video)

    Since you’re good at explaining and you asked for it i do have a question:
    Can you explain the interaction between the functions iso, shutter speed and aperture. I know what each term stands for and also to keep iso as low as possible. Also it’s common to have double the shutter of your fps but are there cases were you differ from this rule in order to have a “better” aperture? Since aperture also deals with depth of field (a term i don’t fully yet understand ) i figured there might be cases were you in or decrease the shutter or iso for a “better aperture”
