Russia's new 'turtle tanks': MT-LB and Z-STS 'Akhmat' vehicles covered in 'anti-drone' armour

- Russia is fitting bizarre armour to its vehicles in a desperate effort to stop them being destroyed by drones in Ukraine. Video from the front shows a MT-LB armoured fighting vehicle shrouded in nets and chains designed to stop it being hit by FPV drones which are now everywhere on the frontlines.
There is a gap in the wire at the back where troops are supposed to get into and out of the transport.
Elsewhere, a Z-STS ‘Akhmat’ fighting vehicle was surrounded by wire that resembles a bird cage in a desperate effort to keep it protected from the drones. Again, a door has been fitted in the back of the cage to allow troops to get into and out of the vehicle. It comes after several ‘turtle tanks’ that have been completely surrounded by steel plating were seen on the frontlines. The first two such tanks were quickly destroyed, but a third - which also featured a large electronic warfare system on its roof - proved surprisingly effective in battle. Russia has been forced to resort to such tactics after suffering heavy vehicle losses in recent months. #russia #ukraine #war

If you are using a IFV from 1970, you are deparate.
It makes sense that Ukraine with it's tiny economy improvises weapons.
It makes less sense that Russia which is supposed to be the strongest military in the world resorts to these chicken coops. It suggests a deep rooted underperformance that forces infantry to resort to these adaptations

You can laugh, but this is how the history of military engineering is made: it all starts with handicrafts. Drone protection is a problem which needs to be solved, because this has never happened before.

Drone protection is already solved by competent advanced militaries like the US, Russia is neither. unlike the US which has had a standardized, professional, actually useful equivalent of this That they simply add to each vehicle when it gets to the unit. It's called rpg netting its been a thing since like 2005. Russia still hasnt standardized this. Plus the array of counter drone systems, the US has already developed that Russia is too technologically incompetent, sanctioned and uncoordinated to use effectively. And, they completely lack the coordination, logistics, tactics, C2 and strategies to effectively employ this type of weapon within their formations. That's why they have to result to this ridiculous clown show, garage cardboard and glue made useless joke of a vehicle

yes, they are. I guess you missed the logs on the tanks earlier in the war. They stopped worrying about being stuck, they got blown up regardless of being stuck or not. I'm laughing at the Russians because, Ukraine has literally upped their drone game and no trench, vehicle or boat are safe, opps forgot the oil fields and military base (notice I didn't say movie theaters, hospitals, shopping malls). They have literally changed on a smaller force can deal serious blows to a larger force and please say their drone army isn't affected. They literally are telegraphing their attacks and Russia still can't really stop it.

What desperation are you referring to? It’s Ukraine that is desperate. Russia is taking village after village, city after city every day. Why would they be desperate?
As we've seen in front line channel videos, these cobbled up shields of armour give the crews confidence to move forward, making them easier targets for the Ukrainian drone attacks.

Still Russia's production numbers are higher than their losses and furthermore its harder for the Ukrainians to get a drone than it is for Russia to get an entire vehicle.
Sorry but I don't see them producing more soldiers, they are tricking Cubans, Indians, Nepalese and other countries into that. I don't know where you get your info but that last thing anyone should say is Ukraine has a hard time getting drone. They have stepped up their drone attack ten-folds, Dude they hit an oil field over 700km away and a drone factory about the same distance but somehow it is hard for them to get drones.
A drone could easily carry a landmine and suddenly land in front of the tank. (in hopes of getting run over). There is a chance a tank crew could see this and stop in time (and shoot the drone/landmine with a gun or rifle) but with limited visibility in the tank this would not be a healthy thing to do. After seeing all the drone attacks I has sort of wondered if one would see this. A chicken coup, chain link fencing and chicken wire is relatively light weight compared to a tank armour.
One wasn't destroyed. It was tracked by an AT mine and then was pulled back a little later by a different tank.
