- Operation Blue Star was an Indian military operation which occurred between 1 June and 6 June 1984, ordered by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to remove militant religious leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his militant armed followers from the Golden Temple comples. The biggest fallout of Operation Bluestar was the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi less than five months after the operation.

I do not think Indira ji had much of a choice. The fact is that the Golden Temple had turned into a haven for terrorists and was being misused as a launching pad for attacks on India which meant allowing the likes of Bhrindanwale a free pass to attack India was not an option.
