    It was rare to have an "arcade perfect" anything back in the 90s, unless you owned a Neo Geo or X68000 or whatever. Comments such as "arcade wins" are stating the bleeding obvious. Of course the arcade was better. That was never the point for us who bought the PSX at launch. We were comparing it to the SNES and Megadrives we were upgrading from. It was an amazing upgrade.

      Arcade perfect on 3D in the mid nineties was impossible to deliver on PS1 and Saturn, but I remember Mortal Kombat trilogy as astonishing and really perfect on my PS1, despite the loading times and the PS1 not so good on 2D as the Saturn

      When you compare those two, the arcade-version has many more CPU-cars, higher resolution, progressive scan, more detailed polygon models, higher draw distance, higher resolution textures and (at least IMO) a much better color-scheme.
      So it's still no contest, but it shows that they improved on the PS somewhat, but it's more a like a tech demo with only 2 CPU cars.

    The frame rate and resolution was lower with the PS1 port, but nevertheless, the home port of Ridge Racer was an astonishing, ground breaking conversion for the time, and the first killer app for the machine. No home console could throw around 3D graphics as effectively prior to the PS1.

      +The Sauber C9 Guy Animations Well, Ridge Racer was the first racing game in 3D, and the PSX was the first game console to use 3D graphics, which was why the Namco development thought "Hey, why not port this game to consoles?" Also, there was a High-Spec re-release of this game, called Ridge Racer Turbo. It ran at 60fps, just like the arcade game. The difference is that races in Turbo are always one-on-one, and Free Run was added, allowing you to freestyle the course by yourself. The Kamata Angelus from Revolution was also another boss added that will challenge you to a race, taking the Soldat Crinale's place.

    Back when these games were new, we'd play them in the arcade then get the PSX version at home and didn't really know there was any difference, bar having a seat, pedals and wheel. It's good to see this side by side, that there were in fact compromises for the PS version. And still, this appears to be one of the most impressive 3D arcade ports ever.

    All I'm seeing in the comments is 'Arcade has better graphics' this and 'Arcade runs at 60fps' that. Yeah, no shit that the arcade version is smoother and more visually impressive. You all seem to be forgetting some important things:
    1. Arcade cabinets are designed to play one, I repeat ONE particular game, whereas consoles are designed to play multiple different games.
    2. The Playstaion port of Ridge Racer is a launch title, in face it's the VERY first PS game. At this stage Namco was literally starting to learn how to program games for it so of course they couldn't bring this port anywhere near it's arcade counterpart.
    3. Isn't the whole point of the video to see how well the PS version holds up to the arcade version rather than to see which is visually superior?
    Does anyone else feel the same way or am I alone on this one?

    • @MH-yp6wg

      1) Thats not true. There were/are many arcade systems playing many different games. Some of them over the course of several years. On (Super) System 22, there were like a dozen games released.
      2) If you put out a learning factor in favour of the PS-Port, you have to do so for the arcade-verson as well. You're forgetting they had to learn to make games for System 22 too.
      Of course, there was the Ridge Racer Prototye "Sim Drive", so they had a small amount of experience when making RR for the arcade (which happened under a lot release date-pressure btw); but it was the same team converting the arcarde-version to the PlayStation, so they had some experience in this game now. So it wasnt completely new for em either.
      3) That depends.
      Back then, a LOT of magazines used to glorify the PS1-Version as "arcade-perfect" (same magazines that used to bash the Dreamcast-version of VF3 as not arcade-perfect while it actually was to 99%!).
      But it's simply no contest, honestly.
      The Arcarde-Version of Ridge Racer pushed 8 times (!) the pixel count of the PS-Version (4x resolution at 2x framerate) while pushing far more polygons (round corners instead of blocky, more detailed cars, more details/buildings etc. round the track), had better draw distance, more direct steering with less input-lag, higher color depth, perspective correct texture mapping, less graphical glitches, a higher texture resolution and texture filtering.
      I still remember playing it in the arcade as a kid loving it to death, and how disappointed i was when i played the home version the first time.
      Course, Namco still did a good job with the port (and it also had to be done quickly), no argument there. Only for an "arcade perfect port" it just was not the same experience as in the arcade. Not at all.

      Every arcade looked better in those days but Ridge Racer was the closest anyone had seen to the Arcade experience at home for a driving game in 1994.
      Now that I can play both side by side on the same size screen, it's amazing how little differences there were between the PS1 version and the multi-thousand dollar coin-op.

    It's actually quite impressive how close to the arcade version the PS1 port is. Literally the only noticeable differences are that the PS1 port has slightly less advance lighting, slightly downscaled textures and runs at exactly half the resolution and framerate. In every other way, both versions play and sound pretty much *exactly* the same!
    If only Sega could have pulled that off in the original Saturn port of Daytona USA...

    • @yukatoshi
      @yukatoshi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      BlueDragon992 That simply wasn't possible regarding Daytona. A $15,000 dollar state of the art arcade machine vs a $399 home console. The reason the RR port to PS1 is so close is because there isn't much difference in graphical capability between the System 22 & PS1 (not including framerate or resolution).
      Now compare the model II to Saturn and the difference is HUGE. Daytona USA CCE on Saturn is graphically and framerate wise what the original Saturn release of Daytona should have been. Apart from the still rather ridiculous draw distance it looked much closer to RR on PS1.

While not as advanced as the Model 2, the 22 was superior to the PS1 in every way. The Daytona port could have been done better but the Saturn was a pain in the ass to develop for. It's pretty insane how the hi spec Ridge Racer demo bundled with Ridge Racer Type 4 at the end of 1998 looks comparable to the arcade version. It only runs with one opponent but all the same, it's an amazing version and shows how far Namco's understanding of the Playstation hardware came in just four years.

    WINNER: ARCADE. The arcade version runs at a much smoother framerate, has higher resolution, and higher texture quality. The PS1 version is still a pretty good conversion, though. People in the 32-bit era often compared "the good Ridge Racer port to the PS1" to "the bad Daytona USA port to the Saturn." But, it is important to remember Daytona USA running on the Model 2 Arcade Hardware was far superior to the Ridge Racer arcade game, so it was a much more difficult port. Also, Daytona USA Remix on the Saturn was a very good port, so Saturn did win in the end - it's just it was too late from a sales perspective.

    • @CJTranceAddiction
      @CJTranceAddiction 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but it still doesn't take away from the fact Ridge Racer was FAR FAR superior to Daytona USA at home visually and gameplay wise. I still remember the perfect 5/5's from gamepro for RR stating how it blows Daytona out of the water....Daytona receiving like 4's, 4.5's. Daytona played like under 30fps dipping to like 20's even while Ridge Racer ran at a very steady 30fps at all times.
      And at arcades, daytona was not FAR better. They were both technically impressive. I will always prefer the look and art style of Ridge Racer. It was just a much more fun game to me.

    • @michaelzoran
      @michaelzoran 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CJTranceAddiction You are correct that Ridge Racer on the PS1 looked better than Daytona on the Saturn. However, that had more to do with Daytona looking like garbage than it did with Ridge Racer actually looking special. The remix of of Daytona on the Saturn actually looked better than the Ridge Racer games on the PS1, but by then the sales war was over. Sega really dropped the ball with the Saturn.

    Ridge Racer on the Playstation ran at 30 frames per second. Many of the dumb Playstation fans out there in the PS5 era think that is a bad thing. But its not. It means you are getting the maximum number of polygons per frame that the hardware allows. At 60 frames per second, you can only display half as much polygon detail per frame. And at 120 frames per second - which very few TV sets have the ability to do - you can only display 25% as much polygon detail per frame (which means the graphics may be "smooth," but they will lack detail).

    The PS RR was a strange experience for me.
    After the crushing disappointment of Saturn Daytona USA, the port of RR was arguably more competent, but far, FAR from arcade perfect and still a bummer for me.
    Don't get me wrong, the core gameplay was there, it played practically like the arcade original (albeit with a controller). I just to accept that these new consoles could not replicate the high-end arcade experience.
    Once I came around with more realistic expectations, I enjoyed the game. I also enjoyed Saturn Daytona USA. Come next Xmas, I warmed up immediately to Saturn Sega Rally and Ridge Racer Revolution. Some games like VF2 and Virtua Cop exceeded my expectations in terms of high-end arcade conversions.

      Frozen Retro ! spoken like someone who has likely barely played any games on the n64 but ok. RR64 was by far the best ridge racer game of that console generation, even though i love the playstation games as well.

    • @retropolis1
      @retropolis1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry, i cannot agree. the N64 Ridge Racer was okay, but the mountain makeover wasn't very pretty, specially considering the time it came out. And the controls were altered too, since it came out after rage racer and RR type 4, which is why they made it more drift heavy. The best Rigde racer game (by far and up to this very day) is still Rage Racer, closely followed by Ridge Racer Type 4 and Ridge Racer 6 / 7.

    • @adesignersperspective
      @adesignersperspective 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      karaokefreak1 agree to disagree i guess. i felt the mountain makeover to the revolution track was a vast improvement over the original and made the tracks altogether look a lot more diverse. and, while i personally feel that the RR64 controls were the best in the series up to that point, i don't understand complaining about it if you didn't like them since the game let you change the controls to be identical to the original RR or revolution. i love the whole series; my favorite on the original playstation is probably type 4, but imho RR64 improved on everything typed 4 started. i've also been playing 7 a lot lately on my ps3 again as well - it's pretty looking and i enjoyed playing through it but it's also just way too easy and forgiving gameplay wise. RR64 had that perfect balance of intense challenge with flawless controls, and for me it had the best graphics of that generation. everyone's going to have a different personal experience, though. (:

    • @retropolis1
      @retropolis1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you never had the chance to play Ridge Racer 6 / 7 (both are almost the same) in hard online sessions. The single player mode is always easy when it comes to ridge racer, but 6 & 7 had awesome multiplayer battles back in the days. Concerning RR64: You could choose an "original Controls" option, but it still did not match the original controls. As I said before, RR64 was too drift heavy for the old tracks, which made it way easier than rage racer.. And on top of that, RR64 used fewer polygons in the mountain makeover, which made some parts appear less detailed (see the first bridge on the first track and the wall section on the second route of the revolution course). Also, the third "renegade" course wasn't very pretty or exciting altogether. I enjoyed RR64 nonetheless. I mean, it's (almost) the only good car racing game on the system. But I spent more time with rage racer than with all other sequels except 6 / 7, and that really sais somenthing if there are only 4 courses available,

    • @adesignersperspective
      @adesignersperspective 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      karaokefreak1 again, agree to disagree. i personally don't see less polygons, but what i do notice - on all of the tracks in RR64 which is a first in the series including type 4 - is that there is zero graphical pop-in anywhere in the game, and it runs at a higher resolution than any of the ps1 games with a more solid framerate as well. and i personally think its track selection is the best of the series but that's just me. i loved type 4 and rage racer but i didn't enjoy the tracks in either as much as the original 2 and loved renegade. it's all just opinion though of course, and i definitely hear yours. we all see and experience things differently for our tastes. also i don't really care for online play - local multiplayer (something all the ps1 games sucked at in comparison to 64) and a solid single player game is what i play games for. online multiplayer is just an icing on the cake sort of a thing for me and i only do it once in a while. i love RR7 don't get me wrong and enjoyed playing through it, and i love unlocking the original track at the end - it just doesn't feel as tight as RR64 overall in terms of difficulty balance. also i felt that the racing lineup on the n64 was the best of that generation - though it did have its fair share of shitty racing titles as well, to be sure, since it had so many.

    The video only shows how much closer the home version of Ridge Racer was to the arcade version than in the case of Daytona on Saturn. The perception of PlayStation's superior performance was reinforced by this game, you actually got something that looked A LOT like the arcade version, whereas with Daytona on the Saturn it looked nothing like as good as the arcade original. It helped that PlayStation hardware was a lot closer to the Namco arcade board than Saturn was to Model 2 for 3D rendering. Ridge Racer sold Sony's console big time. Later on the Hi Spec version of Ridge Racer included in RRT4 also highlighted how far you could push Sony's machine with time and experience. It was super impressive home console hardware for the era.
