The last 4 bars need a smoother ending. The Bassline should be be continuous and grammatically correct in rhythm. The second to last bar should be removed since the repetition of the c# kills the fluidity of the counterpoint in the upper voice especially. The Bassline can be in regular eighth notes in ascending motion and then dropping at D in unison with the upper voice. The Traditional invention counterpoint does not usually have multi textured chords but two voices as usual rather than four as in this case. Everything else is splendid. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your suggestions! I often struggle to find a satisfactory ending. I wasn’t aiming for a strictly baroque style, but I still agree that the ending here is a bit out of place. (:

It kinda just rambles on and on. It lacks the basic compositional devices that are necessary to give a new listener a foundation to follow the journey.

Have you asked every listener if they feel this way? (; I think this is highly subjective. But I would like to know what these “basic compositional devices” are in your opinion. Perhaps I can benefit from them. (:

Inventions have strict forms (cadences, sequences, expositions, episodes, extensions, codas). Those are because of how the human mind works. For example lets take repetition, if you repeat somethng over and over a listener gets bored quickly. But if you continually introduce new material every bar then the listener gets confused. So structure is important to keep a listeners interest. You have to know the rules first, then after they are mastered you can break them because there will usually be a good reason to do so. An amateuer that doesn't know the rules creates robotic type pieces that ramble on and on. Hope that helps.

One more tip that is very useful. " A singer has to breathe"

@@ChernobieffPiano Thank you for elaborating. It’s one of my very first contrapuntal compositions and was more of an exercise, but I personally still like it. I think it’s important to keep in mind that everyone perceives art differently and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. (:
As for the structural aspects, I modeled this piece closely after BWV 775 in terms of structure, so the amount of repetition, the placement of cadences, sequences, etc. is rather similar. The piece does not lack these compositional devices, at least not more so than the one by Bach. I would be interested to know: do you have the same problem with Bach’s invention? And if not, why?

@@averynhiell Bachs invention that you copied breathes and has a memorable melody. This one does not.
