It's difficult for youth today to comprehend just how significant AIDS was. As a girl growing up in the 90s, at the time AIDS was quite terrifying. It was an incurable death sentance, and there was a lot of fear about the disease and anyone that had it, and the difference between HIV and AIDS was not understood by everyone. This resulted in a lot of fear of people that had contracted the disease. If they passed it onto you, you were as good as dead. While AIDS is not transmitted through casual touch and interactions, not everyone knew and understood this, which resulted in a lot of people with AIDS being outcast by their communities. No doubt I'm not the only 90s girl that went through education programs in school specifically about HIV & AIDS where I learned how the disease was transmitted, and just as importantly, how it WASN'T transmitted. And it is fortunate that the disease was not easily transmitted. Imagine the panic and chaos that would occur if HIV was transmitted as easily as Covid-19 is.
The disease is not nearly as terrifying now as it was back then. New treatment options have appeared over the years to keep infected people alive. But back then, before these treatments existed, AIDS was the most feared disease of its time.

The big reveal is that the coach bet his retirement on the big game and needs him to play. He believes by winning he can have enough money that his wife will move back in with his daughter and reconcile with him. They actually lose, and he becomes broke. But by admitting he had a problem and seeking counseling, his wife and daughter moves back in to help make sure he will beat his gambling addiction.. They packed in a lot per episode in the 90s

It's sad that at the time it was still basically a death sentence because the government not only failed to fund research they prohibited it. Delaying the development of good drugs for years. And if course the cost of the drugs that became available at first was astronomical.

RIP his story helped destigmatize the condition to a point that this decease is no longer the death sentence it once was.

Thank You. That poor kid went through hell. This is why education is so important. People become fearful over what they don't know.

Came here expecting a shitpost, got a pretty heartwarming scene instead that reminds me that this show wasn't always pathetic.
I've seen people criticize this episode for having too mature of a subject matter for kids, but honestly, if you actually understand the context of what was going on with the AIDS epidemic at the time this episode was made, it's actually a pretty brave move they did. A lotta people with HIV did get treated unfairly, look into the story of Ryan White if you wanna see what I mean. It's important media like this exists that doesn't sugar coat anything or treats kids like they're these dumb little angels who can't handle reality.

The idea that they wouldn't let him play in the big game because he had AIDs is absolutely fucking laughable.
They shouldn't let him play in the big game because it's obviously already gone to his brain for him to say something that stupid
