Without all the crowds in the hall I think you saw more of GETS than I did, but was great to see you there.

Enjoyed the review of the actual show and layouts and not like most others moaning about how crowded it was, parking, lack of courtesy buses and so on!

still wouldn't go near TT 120, while there's so much more options with 2mm / N gauge, remember TT 120 is 2.54mm / foot, n gauge is 2.00mm / foot, so, as you say, TT 120 is basically 'chunky' N gauge. . . oh, and it's also NOT compatible with the original Triang TT, at 3mm.

TRACK CIRCUIT TRAIN DETECTION PROBLEMS !!!
Don't be daft ! The carefully added & slightly raised zig-zag line (seen at 2:20) along the top of the rail has nothing directly to do with "rail head cleaning". It is a method to ensure good "track circuit" operation (train to signal interface reliability). On sections of track where dirt or other problems can interfere with train detection. Such as on little used tracks (rust), or sections of track where diesel/steam locos stand for long periods & drop oil/grease muck, or even where loco sanding is frequent. All of which can interfere with continuous detection of trains. Remember the signals you see are ONLY the last 5% of modern signalling systems. The other 95% including "zig zag" lines being "invisible" to the average layman !!!!
A good example of the problem is, that at London Waterloo station locomotives are banned from using their sanding gear in the station precincts. Primarily due to the numerous but short track circuits through the complex station throat pointwork. Sand on the rails can insulate a loco/train from the electrical track circuit. So Bulleid steam locomotives (in steam days) trying to start heavy trains often slipped furiously because they were not allowed to use their sanding gear. And the doppy train spotters all thought Bulleid Pacific's had design faults as a result !!!!
Further in the short loco & van bays, at the country end of some platforms, the rails also had this "zig zag" pattern added. Because many steam locos spent time between trains in these bays, leaving oil & grease all over the track, which would otherwise insulate them from the rails. They would not therefore have shown up on the signalbox panel, & the signalman would not be able to tell if a loco or locos were present. This would also allow signals to be cleared, when they should have been locked at red (known as a "wrong side failure") !!!

Thank you for that detailed explanation, but I do hope you realised I was joking when I mentioned the use of track rubbers!😄
