    This is the best and pretty much only use of a 360 cam, the way everyone else uses them where they film something and everything else is useless is just not the way it should be done. But the way you do it here, simply moving it to the important parts is very nice!

    The aero changes didn't seem to make any massive changes, I wonder if that is due to the limited area under the car compared to the big flat bottom of the F1 cars. The front shocks seem to show more front end bite which is good.

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't expect any downforce really from this tray, it's not at all optimized for that sort of thing. I was hoping for a drag reduction and that's what I struggled to find in the data. It was hard to judge from what I have, I didn't really cover in the video how variable each lap was, especially in the data from the previous round due to the oil. And if a car is in front, even some distance away, it has an impact on straight line speed. So I did my best to try to find good comparative laps and make my judgement on those. The most important finding to me was that the temperature didn't increase too much, which was the last item of information I needed to be happy to build the real undertray.

    Awesome build mate. very impressive. a lot of work even for what is a very simplistic style of car.
    I haven't seen it mentioned, but how did the car end up in terms of weight? any lead needed?
    as for the aero pack... doesn't appear many are running it. have up I considered the drag vs grip trade off on such a low powered class of car?

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Car is roughly 420kg without driver, lead or fuel. I need around 20kg of lead to bring the car up to minimum weight.
      No one runs aero in Formula Vee. There was a car that ran it for one or two rounds but it wasn't very successful. There is a benefit even with a low powered car, you do lose out on the straights but you can get a lot of it back through the corners and under braking. It's going to be track dependant of course but the benefit can be there. This video by Kyle.Drives is a pretty good explanation: th-cam.com/video/DTAG9sCKXn0/w-d-xo.html. He actually did the design for this car so he's the guy to go to.

    Ur series is very informative and helpful. Lets say u had a bigger budget what would be the change that u would do to max out ur car?

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd have contracted out most of the work I did to fabricators. I had most of the car fabrication quoted but it was unaffordable to me. I'd also have had the engine worked on and maintained properly throughout the year. The result would have been better and I would have had more time to put into improving my driving and racing. But not much in terms of improvements to the design, I was happy with the car.

    Hi! :-) What is the max possible engine size in this category? How much tuning can be done to the engine. Asking this because... well, VolksWagen flat-4 was my big passion long ago... passion started by my father, we had a couple of beetles when i was a kid, and i know there are big power custom engines out there in this old-school-air-cooled-flat-4 configuration. Everything is cool about this engine and the beetle thingy. All the best & best regards from Bucharest, Romania! ;-)

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The engine must comply with the category regulations. Two sizes are permitted, a 1200cc and 1600cc engine. Parts and tuning are highly restricted. The 1600cc will provide up to about 70hp to the wheels. I didn't do much with the engine, I'd have involved an engine builder to get it sorted if I had the cash.

    If you've changed the aero between race meets, and you've now suddenly got the fastest car at the end of the straight, I'd say the aero IS working, and HAS improved. Measurably so, in fact. ;)

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I mentioned in another comment, I found it was very difficult to get good comparison laps from before/after the addition, both due to the oil last round and due to the massive effect of the tow on the straight (most laps were affected by this). This was about the closest I got to a good comparison and it didn't show a difference in the data but like you say, the sector times do seem to indicate the car is faster than the competition at high speed so there may be a demonstrable difference there. I just wasn't able to find it in the data.

    Great Videos But I have a couple Questions about your engine
    I have had several VW bugs/ Karmen ghias
    Why are you only using a single carb set up, or are you using fuel injection
    Why aren't you using the porch fan shroud and alternator? From what I remember they help allot with cooling
    It looks like you are using the old school VW generator
    (I think the alternator runs better)
    do you have a battery on board
    (if so kill the generator and just run a shaft directly to the fan
    or
    throw out the battery and just run the generator)
    How stock is your engine It does not look like you have a lot of improvements

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Single carb, fan and shroud are mandated by the rules, the alternator has the insides ripped out so it's a full loss system - gotta charge the battery during the day. Engine is close to stock, a few after market parts and mods here and there but not too significant.

    • @peterrusanoff1010
      @peterrusanoff1010 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow,
      you're running a late 70 VW bug engine from what it looks like but I'm not sure. There are many modifications you can do to your engine.
      I have had 3 VW bugs: 1964, 1967, 1964
      and 2 VW Karmen Ghia: 1960 and 1967
      Is it just a 1600 cc limit or are there other limits as well? If so and if you like I can send you a bunch of links to parts that will make your 1600 a monster for CHEAP
      TopEnd ~ EasyFix and Long lasting engines
      Get Rid of the single carbs
      go dual carbs or EFI (The carbs are a pain to synchronize)
      Going Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) will increase your performance efficiency significantly
      Port and polish your heads!!! (Big Boost... should only take a day or so but be careful !!! youtube the freq out of it )
      The type of fuel system you choose will dictate how you port and polish the intake of your heads intake. For carbs rough for EFI nice smooth and polished)
      The heads are aluminium and not magnesium like the case. No need to be afraid of the dust, however, you can cut too deep very easy. When porting try to keep the width area smooth and equal at all times and places. Just smoothing out the surfaces will improve your performance!
      Compression: If you plan on keeping this engine do not bump this too high as I have seen lots of friends over do it, Spark plugs Fly, the life span gets cut allot
      Your heads are dual port which is better for top speed but single port VW heads are more torquey and better for lower speeds
      What speed are you on the track
      Which fan and shroud are mandated???
      If you can get a Porsche fan shroud !!!!!!!!!!!!
      kaefer.motor-sport-service.de/assets/images/db_images/db_DSCF66711.jpg
      much better cooling, especially since your oil cooler is not on the block inside the fan shroud heating up cylinder 3!
      Get The oil cooler away from the inlet!!!!!!!
      Yes VW hate being at a stop but you can easily fix that by adding a larger oil reservoir and moving the cooler up front
      Bottom End~
      CAM
      adjustable Cam Gear will improve performance crazy
      (I can talk all day about cam ratios if you would like to PM )
      When you do this you can cut the muffler off again and it will blow the other guys away
      Not going to talk about the crank here!!!

    I love the quality of these videos! How do you get the camera to rotate when in car? I've watched your build videos with a great deal of interest. My wife said I can put our boys into racing, they're 4 and 1 1/2. Next year my oldest can run dirt karts at Merritville speedway in Niagara Canada, and get onto road courses around 8. I've already pictured their faces on the Borg Warner Trophy! I wasn't allowed to race growing up and I'm looking at F Vee (F 1200 in Canada) as a great hobby way to get seat time and telegraph the passion to my kids! Love the videos keep them up!

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks. The camera itself doesn't rotate, rather it takes a full 360 spherical video. The video can then be watched using a VR headset or just by moving the image with the mouse/phone to see in all directions. For this though I wanted to dictate where the camera looked so I kept it as a normal video and edited the video to get the effect that I wanted. There isn't a well developed workflow for doing this from what I can tell in Premiere Pro (what I use to edit the videos) but I believe GoPro are including this functionality in their new 360 degree camera which should be pretty cool.

      +Niv Mizrahi I didn't end up doing a video on the steering as it was so simple. Rack, shaft through brass bush, wheel. No assistance, it can be quite tough on the arms - I had a race over the weekend and my arms are sore from driving.

    • @Nivz54
      @Nivz54 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, thank you for answering so fast! a few extra questions:
      can youpost any pictures of the steering mechanism?
      whats the engine displacement and power?
      thanks again!

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can't find any photos of it all assembled in the car, here's a photo from during fabrication though:
      scontent.fmel4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/15289164_668671973313435_730679604494356165_o.jpg?oh=333dc96eeba223decf47dcad4b78daac&oe=5A354293
      On the left is the spline for the quick release steering wheel, nearer the middle on the left is the mount just underneath the dashboard - this contains a brass bush to allow it to rotate - then on the right is an insert that goes into the universal joint connected to the rack.

    I'm not familiar with these cars and if they have enough momentum to do this but consider this instead of falling into line when someone beats you into a corner why not back up your entry to try and get a crossover (I'm not trying to offend just noticing that you had a chance or two to do this)

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kyle Grzech I don't mind the question. From behind the wheel it doesn't feel like I'd have the power for an effective crossover unless they screw up the corner. Once they are past I might as well not fight it further so I just drop behind so as to both maintain enough momentum to keep up with those in front.
      So I'm not saying what I do is the best that could be done, just the best that I can do at the moment. Perhaps as I continue to improve I'll be able to hold my position more effectively.

    what are the rules about dive bombing into corners?

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CAMS has a Code of Driving Conduct (section 7 of the CAMS Race Meeting Standard Regulations) which describes how we can race with one another. If someone performed a "dive bomb" that endangered a fellow competitor that would probably be handled by 7.3e which simply states "It is not permitted to drive an automobile unnecessarily slowly, erratically or in a manner deemed potentially dangerous to other Drivers at any time.". There is an amount of judgement that must be used, normally there is a Driving Standards Officer (DSO) who makes the call on what is and isn't OK.
      What makes you ask the question?

    • @cameronleslie1595
      @cameronleslie1595 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for letting me know, I watch a lot of F1 game play and play a lot of the MotoGP games, and at least in the video games (and rather commonly in MotoGP) I see dive bombing.
      when watching your race, i saw plenty of opportunities to do it, and wanted to know the reasoning as to why you did not do it. I also love how you tlk about what you were thinking during the race, it helps me understand how to think it out and plan during races.
      Keep up the great work! :D

    • @thomsenmotorsport7201
      @thomsenmotorsport7201  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback, it's an interesting question. It's hard to convey but everyone is on their own limit of what they can do with braking, depending on car setup and the drivers line where people brake may be slightly different but for the most part people are braking as late as they possibly can while still making the corner. Even if you're side by side with someone, theoretically you would need to brake earlier than someone taking the ideal line because you would be taking a shallower entry into the corner, but in reality the driver on the outside will need to compromise their line because of the overtaking driver. What I'm trying to get at is that a "dive bomb" against a competent driver is not simple, they are going to be braking as late as they can, taking the ideal line while the dive bomber needs to take a compromised shallower line while braking later to get by. It can be done - just look at Ricciardo against Raikkonen last Sunday at Monza - but the driver overtaking would have to be significantly better under brakes or they risk hitting the other driver or going off.
      There's another aspect to it. If a car following another car is right on their tail and they both brake as they normally would where they normally would, they would collide in the braking zone. The following driver is separated by a period of time but as the velocity reduces the distance will reduce until they touch. So the following driver must hit the brakes earlier but not as hard to not hit the other driver. It can make it look like there is an opportunity when there isn't, like the following driver isn't driving as hard as the one in front.
      In Formula Vee there's another aspect to it, which is the draft. We have so little power that staying in the draft can often be the only opportunity to catch and pass people in front. Making big moves into slow corners might get you in front of the next car but if you do it in a way that slows you both down, such as a dive bomb, then you could lose the tow to the drivers in front plus the driver behind might just tow you down the next straight anyway. So it can be worth thinking tactically, not always going for the overtake but biding your time until later in the race when there is less chance you will be taken back.
      I hope that helps explain my thoughts on it.
