Fantastic reaction, I felt for you during this video. The relentless dread, and I love how you referenced "gaslighting". Have you ever seen the movie "Gaslight", with Ingrid Bergman? You'd do a great job on that one! Anyway, I know this is an older reaction so I'll just say thanks! EXCELLENT edit of the movie,

This film builds a sense of terror by a slow process of implying evil and creating a sense of paranoia. It is so much more frightening than the jump scare , gorey horror movie. I'm much more frightened of an evil supernatural force than a human slasher. This film shows how the seemingly normal, quiet bourgeois existence can be dominated by evil. There are so many subtle moments. One in particular always jars me. It's early when the couple have dinner with the Castavets. After the dinner they are socializing in the living room and you see Guy and Roman in deep conversation. They both turn to look at Rosemary and you can see that Guy has already become a willing participant in evil. Great movie!

In 1976, there was a TV movie sequel, titled LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED TO ROSEMARY'S BABY, which picks up 8 years after the first film. We learn that Guy took off for a successful career in Hollywood, while Rosemary and Adrian stayed behind with the coven. Rosemary (played by Patty Duke) absconds with the boy prior to his 8th birthday party in an effort to prevent the coven from performing some sort of ritual on him
    .
It's been year since the viewed the film, so most of the details are fuzzy ... somehow a hooker played by Tina Louise (Ginger from Gilligan's Island) offers them shelter, then somehow convinces Rosemary to hide out in an abandoned bus. Suddenly, the bus powers up and takes off (without a driver) and we never learn of Rosemary's fate.
The film then skips ahead to show a now adult Adrian, going by the name Andrew, being a trouble maker with the local police ... and honestly, the rest of the film was so boring, I can't even recall how it ends.
The film was poorly written but Patty Duke's (brief) screen time and the return of Ruth Gordon as Minnie Castevet are about the only things making this dud of celluloid worth watching at all.
    = = = = = = = = = =
Ira Levin, the author of the ROSEMARY'S BABY novel, published a sequel novel in 1997, titled SON OF ROSEMARY, which completely ignores the event of the 1976 TV movie, and serves as a direct sequel to the original film.
It is reveled that the year is now 1999 and Adrian is a world famous new age spiritual guru. The coven had placed a spell over Rosemary in 1973, putting her in a coma to prevent her from running off with Adrian. As the novel beings, she has awakened upon the death of the last member of the coven.
After being reunited with Adrian, she herself becomes a celebrity of sorts, all the while, Adrian attempts to reassure her that he's rejected the coven's evil influence and wants to bring spiritual enlightenment to the world.
There are a few odd interactions between Rosemary and Andy (bordering on incest) and on new year's eve, a deadly virus is unleased upon the planet and Satan emerges to drag Rosemary to Hell. She then wakes up to find herself 33 years in the past (prior to getting pregnant), laying in bed next to Guy at their apartment in the Bramford building. It's left up to the reader to decide if Rosemary simply dreamt the events of the 1967 and 1997 novels or had actually experienced a premonition of future events.

If you like the movie, make sure to read the book “Rosemary’s Baby” by Ira Levin, which came out in 1967 and is still in print. The movie follows the book closely, but of course the book has much more detail than the movie, and you’ll understand Rosemary’s background (as well as the others) background more.

"He chose you, honey! From all the women in the world to be the mother of his only living son!"
Fun Fact: Mia Farrow does the vocals on the title-sequence lullaby.
Real Acting Fact: According to Mia Farrow, the scenes where Rosemary walks in front of traffic were spontaneous and genuine. (SOB Fugitive Director) is reported to have told her that "nobody will hit a pregnant woman" before filming. The scene was successfully shot with Farrow walking into real traffic and (SOB Fugitive Director) following, operating the hand-held camera since he was the only one willing to do it.
Hot Take Fact: Many scenes are shot in one continuous unbroken take or with minimal cuts in an unnoticeable way, such as the opening scene where Rosemary and Guy first tour their apartment (two cuts), the laundry room scene (only one cut), the "let's have a baby" scene, the New Year's Eve party, Rosemary's and Guy's argument after their party, Rosemary's getting the unfortunate phone call about Hutch, the final scene at Dr. Sapirstein's office where she tells him of Adrian Marcato, Rosemary's phone call with Baumgard, and the famous phone booth scene.

A great classic creepy thriller with loads of dark comedy as only Polanski knows how to deliver it. Ruth Gordon is priceless as the pushy, ridiculous looking old yenta who's part of Satan's cabal. I don't think you over-analyzed it. In fact the movie had all sorts of social commentary, particularly about women's roles in society and how women were baby makers and were expected to conform and had no "agency" (I don't really like that word). But that was a big topic in the 60s.

This was filmed inside the exclusive Dakota in NY, where John Lennon lived & was later killed at the entrance. The director's wife, actress Sharon Tate, was later murdered by the "Manson Family" year this came out, 1969? So is a classic for many reasons. Other classics that followed, & must sees too if haven't, include "The Exorcist", "The Omen" Trilogy, & even though not a "supernatural" like those, original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" too! You may have seen, but if not, even though considered top-5 horror & X-Rated where I lived as a kid in the '70's, is one of the least gory horror films there is! Then there's "Black Christmas", which is considered first "Slasher", & of course, "Halloween" to finish out '70's. Last great Horror, imo, was beginning of '80's. Fewer & farther between after that for me. Great choice with this one! Looking forward to it! Hope all's well, stays well, friend!

I believe Rosemary was chosen only because her friend 'Terry' chose to jump out the window after Roman told her that they wanted her to have Satan's baby. (Remember the overheard conversation when they were trying to sleep, the older woman saying "You shouldn't have told her I knew she wouldn't be open-minded".) The older woman found out from talking to Rosemary just how fertile women in Rosemary's family is. The got to know her husband 'Guy' during their dinner. When Rosemary was in the kitchen with their hostess helping with the dishes, Roman was promising Guy fame and fortune if they could use Rosemary in their 'conception' ritual and Guy agreed after they caused the other actor who was up for the same part to go blind. In other words, they chose Rosemary strictly because of convenience. If another couple had moved in instead of them, they would have attempted to do the same thing to them.
According to the scriptures, God Almighty created hell, not Satan. And you're right about Satan being created an Angel, he is the very first 'fallen angel'. He didn't chose Rosemary to be the mother of his child, it was these satanists/witches who did, because of the reasons I explained above.

    Rosemary’s Baby reaction:
Nope, don’t do the “psychological thriller” nonsense, the whole point of that is for Hollywood to say, “nah, it’s not REALLY Horror, it’s a good movie…and because it’s not that Horror trash, we can nominate the actors and the film for awards, (see Misery & Silence Of The Lambs, two films everyone involved agree is Horror, until you get to the studios who are trying to market the films to people the imagine have a predisposition against Horror, probably because they do.)
This film is really a part of the “Honey, How On Earth Could We Ever Pass Up A Deal Like That?!” genre, (for other films in that genre see The Amityville Horror (I recommend starting with 2005 remake because of Ryan Reynolds’ abs’ performance. Also, the “do I like his beard?” reaction. The 1979 original is good as well, starring Margot Kidder & James Brolin.)
John Cassavettes looks nothing like Jim Siedow, but if you have TCM on the brain I can see how you might draw the comparison. Anyway, TCM was made for ~$140,000.00USD & under the kinds of working conditions actors today would find appalling, (Mostly an issue of the heat, tbh,) while Rosemary’s Baby is stacked w/ A-list actors and had a budget of ~$2,300,00.00USD. Though a well-known actor, Cassavetes was also a director-see Killing Of A Chinese Bookie (1976.)
Rosemary’s Baby is a top tier film in my rankings, the performance are fantastic and the pacing and tension is masterful.
When I first saw the film I didn’t appreciate the “Hail Satan!” ending, I thought the allegory would have been stronger without it. But, it’s grown on me. Also, without that part we would get the classic soundbite, “you maniacs!,” now would we.
    Checkout Invisible Man (2020.)
    And a mother’s love?
Checkout Crimes Of The Future (2022)
“I’m sure a lot of you know more about Satan,” she says 😏
As a Catholic Rosemary wouldn’t jump out a window, especially not with the baby she emphatically refuses to abort, (even though no one even suggested an abortion.)

    • @cwdkidman2266
      @cwdkidman2266 ปีที่แล้ว

@@VictorLugosi Just. repeating Polanski. Also, the social satire/comedy is real in the sense of there are directors who say they've made such. Funny Games with Naomi Watts and Tim Roth is a home invasion movie to some people and a social comedy/satire to others. According to the writer/director it was meant to be a social comedy. I didnt find it funny at all, but apparently that's not the point. It is different from a black comedy like Dr Strangelove but exactly the same as 1938s Holiday, with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. It's not funny at all but you can see the sly digs at American society.
Polanski refuses to be pinned down and merely said that many in Europe took RB that way. And if you start watching it that way, as I did after I read his comment, you can see his point. Patsy Kelly was one of the great comic actresses of the 1930s. Sidney Blackmer and Ruth Gordon are unchecked in their broad acting. Gordon scrubbing on the floor is great. As for Farrow, her child-like naivete can be seen as over the top.
Our problem is that we know the story. And so we gloss over anything that might be construed as humorous. We see Patsy Kelly sticking out her tongue at Farrow and can't believe her spitefulness. But someone else might be motivated to laugh. As for Ruth Gordon she really Noo Yawks her voice and her part up to the level of absurdity. And that's probably the characteristic of the social comedy: juxtaposing the ridiculous with the horrible.
Again, I just repeated Polanski, and Drew on what I knew of the genre. And I rewatched RB twice with that in mind. I did not mean to speak for all Europeans, merely those critics and audiences who found it so. And in deed the satire is there for the taking. If one is so inclined.
