I just made three of these in my classroom and a few adjustments and adds I’ll share since they aren’t seen in the video. Number one, I twisted the wires under the pages so they wouldn’t fall back out and placed a drop of glue in the hole so they wouldn’t wiggle. I used 20 gauge since that’s what Walmart had and it’s pretty thick for this, but actually worked well since you can easily twist and bend them in a shape and they won’t sway and move. Also, to conceal the glue, I placed butterflies near the opening and bent them a little first to look like they’re coming off the page. Finally, she’s using one cut out per wire. I used two. I placed one drop of glue on a cut out, placed the wire and sandwiched the wire with another cut out. It gives it a much more 3D appearance time and conceals the wire attachment. I purchased a heart and bird cut out to use as well. For those despairing over the books...I’m using discarded books from our library that haven’t been checked out in over ten years and need to be cleared for new books. Almost forgot...I also glued the pages down onto the hard back spine. I’ll be happy to share photos if anyone contacts me.

I love it! Good way to hang on to a fav. book that is falling apart and you can't fix it. If it's one of your 'good friends' and you have had it for years, this would be a good way to upcycle instead of tossing it...
Wow. I'm one of those that has a hard time messing up a book, but I'm going to have to. :-) I'm going to use my Cricut to cut the butterflies and I need color in this so will either water color the butterflies or maybe use some scrap book paper. The Cricut also has some "side" views of butterflies that I'm going to use. I can't wait to get started.
I happen to have a couple extra copies of a couple of books I like... some water damaged in a move and have pages smudged, so I'll never read them again (yes, I'm picky with my books, deal with it)... might have to give this a go...
I want to do this but because I love my books so much, maybe I'd just staple newspapers and drill old textbooks from school instead. I hope that would look half as good as this one in the video. XD Great job!

Please tell me that if you're so concerned for a book that you would never make art out of it, you are just as concerned about the unborn, puppy mills and sex slaves... you know, something worth getting upset about? Good grief. We've all read books that we've wanted to toss across the room because they sucked so badly - The Secret, anyone? Take that garbage and make it pretty. Drill, baby, drill!
I know this is an older video, but I just wanted to say that I only use books that are ruined, outdated info... like old ecyclopedias etc. also books missing pages and scribbled in. I just paint or drill to cover that stuff. Also mildew and molded books , I clean them and primer covers the odor. So there are ways to do this art without destroying good books :-)
My professor gave us a project similar to this, which is why I'm here to learn how I'm supposed to attach the wire, but when I first got the project I was rather upset because it hurts my feelings that I have to "ruin" someone's life work. I ended up choosing a dictionary because it doesn't hurt as bad. I know I wouldn't have been able to do it with a classic like Frankenstein!

I love to book fold ... And a lot of people say that good books are ruined ... But the sad fact is thousands of books that can't be sold on through charity shops etc end up pupled ... I rescued loads of books which I hope to recycle into something pretty Like this ... I then give my finished books to charity to be sold on ... I wouldn't dream of using a new book
I feel that art brings a book back to life. Libraries and other book sources burn or destroy old books so this is a great way to create beauty and stop destruction. I love books too but why not change them into something beautiful to keep them around forever?

Exactly what I was thinking! Variegated butterfly sizes? You can also use thin pieces of transparency sheets instead if wire

ac moore,michaels,amazon. They're called punches. Martha Stewart makes a gorgeous one. it's a little stiff when it punches but it's beautiful.
Placed near an open window the butterflies will move in a breeze.
