- Jon Mark (vocals, guitar, drums) and Johnny Almond (vocals, woodwinds, vibes, percussion). Jon Mark and Johnny Almond were top London session musicians in the 60s, at a time when the British rock explosion was at full force. They played with everyone from The Rolling Stones to Marianne Faithfull. Mark even owned a production company with guitarist Jimmy Page, who later started the seminal rock group, Led Zeppelin. Mark and Almond met in the late 60s, on a two year tour with John Mayall, the acknowledged father of the white blues. Both recorded on Mayall's classic album, The Turning Point. On tour, they discovered a strong musical affinity which ultimately resulted in Mark-Almond. Through the 70s the band toured the United States and Europe, and made recordings for a variety of labels. Over time, Mark-Almond consistently forged new ground and retained an uncanny sense of identity due to the strong musical vision of its leaders.

This is the best cover of New York State Of Mind . Jazzy blues doesn't get any better folks.
tout à fait d"accord, c'est la meilleure version jamais entendue.......superbe!
even better than original song...
Among other things, this duo was a key part of John Mayall's album, "Turning Point", one of the best albums ever! They killed on this cover of the Billy Joel song!
With music this mellow, you don't need Valium. This is what music is meant to do.
I was in this band in the '70's, r.i.p. Johnny Almond.
I probably saw you play on High Street in Columbus Ohio. Table by the stage. Already a big fan at that time. 1973 or 4
Wow😕 I’m a big fan. Though I never saw him play, his music will live forever in me. Thank you Sir🙏🙏
Wow!!! Thanks for your comment!
This song performed by the Mark-Almond Band nails what it was like living in NYC in the 70's.The melodic mood swings pick up all the vibrations of a city that once was...gritty, smart, sexy and soulful!
I've followed their music since the late 60's. Unbelievably brilliant. This rendering is indeed the best ever recorded, by anyone!
Since the 70's for me, R.L. It was a great gateway into the land of jazz, and soothed the soul.
Had a chance to see them in a small club in the mid 70's. The opening act was Darryl Strummer who went on to become Genesis' drummer and the crowd loved him.Mark Almonds manager was pissed because the crowd were not aware of Jon and Johnny's music and he thought it would be a long evening. Anyway Mark Almond played and received standing ovations and gained many fans what an evening I still have some signed tickets and albums from that day great memories.
Daryl Stuermer is a guitarist who played with Jean Luc Ponty and as Genesis touring guitarist after Steve Hackett left them.
My Mother was from New York . We lived in Texas the entire time of our growing up yrs and afterwards until her death in 2002.
Anyways When I heard this song on the radio in the 70's I couldn't wait to gift her with this album. She absolutely loved it, listened to it all the time. We played it at her funeral. Listening today brought tears. Such a beautiful song, sax is amazing, voice so much emotion, lots of memories.
I've been searching for this song forever. When I lived in New York during 77-78, this was the version I would hear on the radio. Too bad it's not on Spoptify.
Alison Steele would play this on rainy nights in the City on her overnight show on WNEW.
Last heard this when doing my radio show at university in the 70s - it was often my opening cut. So glad I came across it so many years later. Sounds even better now than then. So pure.
I was his baby sitter for years back in the day...and while they were making this album...what a RIDE!!!
RIP Jon Mark + Johnny Almond. Thanks a lot for all the beautiful music!
"FOR A BRIEF FEW PRECIOUS MOMENTS IN TIME I AM FREE TO SOAR AMONG THE CLOUDS, W/NOTHING TETHERING ME TO EARTH, WHERE NO ONE CAN REACH ME, TO DESTROY THE MAGIC. FLYING HIGH W/" JOHNNY ALMOND". IMPOSSIBLE TO DUPLICATE, THERE TO BE ENJOYED ETERNALLY.
These 2 guys carried on some of the greatest conversations with their music...
Following are remarks I just posted on my FaceBook page about this "Brings back wonderful memories.... friends said it was music for the valium crowd.... but I loved all the Mark-Almond Band. Anyone else remember and like?
Forgive me for getting lost in the 1970's ... man I feel like I am 39 and not 79. Love this song. Just give me another valium! and off to ... chase the paths I only dreamed of, and didn't follow..SIGH!!!"
Musical State of mind captures all the feel and moody of NY City late fall late afternoon with shadows on building and mist
Great music from back in the day when FM radio played some great stuff between midnight and four AM
Super musicien j’adore
On KSAN it was voco
WHVY was great back then yup ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
On WNEW it was Alison Steele.
Use to stay up every Saturday night from 12 to 4 with whatever we had listening to music like this. Great days back in the 70’s
I found Mark Almond while wrongly looking up something, and let me tell you they're one of the best bands and one of my favourites.
mark and almond yeah
So i'm with this girl in houston in the mid-70s and she takes me to see bette midler{didn't want to go} and these guys played first. i was totally blown away! what a performance. became an instant fan ! then bette came out and sent us all into outer space. what a nite
I went to a local music store here in Omaha and i was lost as to what to buy, so many different kinds of music I liked and one of the workers there at Homer's (name of record store {still around!}) came up to me and picked me out three tape cassettes which I still have, this being one and it is still some of my absolute favorite music. One of the other three is John Klemmer, Barefoot Ballet, which is also amazingly good. I swear that guy at the record store read my soul! I was so lucky to get these that day. I think Rick James was the other cassette. Just amazing..
Brings back great memories of a particular night in 1980. This is a favorite version of mine.
Fantastic feel-their work is some of the most well produced anywhere. The transition is utterly out of this world...
Un sound inimitabile ha più di 40 anni ed è sempre piacevolissimo ascoltarlo
I just discovered this song (2017) and I love it
Glad to hear old man .I'm only 60
I hope to catch up to you...with the deepest respect....
Jon Mark R.I.P.
Sublime souvenir des années de bahut enfumées et découverte de l'univers jazz tempéré
WOW, powerful! Love it!
Every great song deserves an even better cover. This has been on my 'favourites' playlist since first buying the album was back in the dark, distant past. It still hasn't lost any of its magic.
Man, this music will settle your soul. Thank you guys!
I know this version from the 70' personally, I think this is the best version of NY State of Mind!
❤️ beautiful version
WOW, sentire una canzone cercata per 40 anni... sono senza parole.
Brilliant ❤
para mí la mejor version de este tema, el arreglo musical es New York en si, la melodía vocal incomparable..tengo está versión en un LP muy clasico.
There is quite a lot of their music available on itunes and Amazon...so fabulous...their music is completely undateable when you listen to it now. "The City" is my very favorite of all.of their tunes.
This one is mellow!
thx for introducing me to these musicians. very beautifully played
eversince I heard this in a jazz LP, it was instant fave.
Sweet. I have always been in a New York State of Mind....
Just beutiful soul
I'm with NewWoman525...The Almonds are classic,,grass roots , urban, could listen all day and I do sometimes..lol....The City is one of my favs as well!!
WHOA!!!!!!!! What a re-discovery of a song of so many years back!!
Epic.........
so great music. wow~~
saw them at the off night music hall in mpls back in the day. wonderful eve. sought out this performance as a tribute to new york under siege today.
wayne mathews turned me on to this band. Great gift, john marks & johnny almond was so nice to listen to.
j'adore !!!!
They did a great version of this song.
Una meravigliosa notte con il tuo grande amore.❤
To Mike I'm sure you've gotten a slew of corrections about Darrel Strummer but the point he makes about exposure to Mark Almond rings true to me as well. I guess I can understand their evasion of pop success because its challenging music. i'm always surprised how unknown they have remained.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Extra good.
I was looking for a great jazz style arrangement of this song that I could sing and play in my key and this is great. Great talent! Thanks.
I know many will disagree but in my world Johnny Almond is the finest sax player ever to grace this planet with his music. We don't need no stinking Coltrane, we got us some Almond!
At least equals . . .
I am so glad I found this. Best cover ever. I heard this a few years ago on the radio and I thought the DJ said "Dwayne Allman". So much better than Billy Joel even though he wrote it.
It's so much better than the Billy Joel version!
@@ab72420 Actually, at one point Johnny Almond briefly toured with Billy Joel. He may have recognized it for the brilliant piece of music it is, and decided to perform it with his own group. And we should all say, "Thank you."
The music of the future is classical. This done composition by Mark Almond is ahead of our time. This will lead us to reflect upon how will our contemporary young artists and musicians will pick-up such sentient realms in their taking-off and liberate the many out of the present material pseudo culture. (Manila PH)
The sentence "This done composition by mark Almond is ahead of our time" makes no sense. Not to mention the fact that the composition is by Billy Joel.
J'ai tous les albums vinyles de Mark and Almond....c'est mon groupe préféré des seventies, avec Dire Straits.....
HAVE ORIGINAL " MARC ALLMAN" ALBUM): SHOUT OUT TO " JON MARC & JOHN ALLMAN", THESE FORGOTTEN " MAESTRO'S" WERE AHEAD OF THEIR TIME; W/JOHN MAYALL, THE CREATED "GENRE SHATTERING BLUES SOUND", W/OUT DRUMS; CAUGHT " PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND(SIMILAR SOUND); MISSED THIS "MAYALL BAND". ONE OF THE ALL TIME "GREATS".
❤❤❤
Sublime
Great song.. first heard on KSHE, which was "real rock radio" but they'd branch out sometimes. Love the Rhodes - one of its best appearances.
Perfect 👌🏽
God dang I miss this shit
makes up for all the bad NY talk....love it .
First time actually heard the song I cannot recall other singers of this number but at least it's pedigree is the 70S
How did I not know about Mark Almond?
Real quality. I believe they were at the first concert I saw (at 17 HS) in Bern, Switzerland in 1967, featuring Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, John Mayall, Mark Almond, the Animals, Anselmo Trend ( I have the poster or I wouldn't have mentioned them). John Mayall, who was playing in a club in the old town of Bern prior to the show introduced Mark Almond and Clapton playing, since Ginger Baker was out of commission, so Cream couldn't make it. I mentioned the concert to Dave Mason on his facebook site since my memory can be fuzzy and he posted a casual jpg with them all there in Bern mentioning how much fun it was for him. I'm hazy but I think it was before the Monterey Pop festival. John Mayall sat on our bleacher after he played and one of our friends(Duncan Putnam) went over to talk to him; he was very approachable and welcoming. He's stepped into the club on the way over. Unforgettable and life changing.
That's quite a concert!
Most jazzy and sexy song I ever heard!
The definitive version.
WHY this song is not available in the iTunes store or on Apple Music is beyond me. Not even the live version off of "The Last & Live."
Upea! Great!
ahh, that lush sound of the Fender Rhodes ..
This is really smoothe ... Wonderful vibe through the whole track... Jon Mark had such a mellow voice... I'm trying to find an album of his I once had on vinyl entitled Songs For A Friend... Anyone heard this ??
Used to have this on vinyl. Guess it got lost in the shuffle.
Oh, well -- viva TH-cam

They didn't them because they the band where the Best make book on dat one🎷🇬🇧🎼🎤🎹🎹🎸🎩
That rhode
Who wrote "NY state of Mind"? I thought Billy Joel wrote that? I love by these guys!
Often wonder if Marc Almond ever noticed the coincidental similarity of their names...would of been cool if they recorded especially since Marc could get jazzy...what an interesting project idea...the namesake series lol
liked yesterday.. for the date..
just me and a lady
I love this..I am trying to remember the name of the album this was on..and the other songs on it. I lost mine in Hurricane Katrina and cant find it now.
the City
According to Wikipedia, the album was "The Ghetto" and also included "The City". All under The Blue Thumb label.

I'd like to find this for download, but the only version I can find on I-Tunes is a live version. This is the one I want.
I'm not trying to be cheap--I've searched for it, but can only find the live version, which I don't care for. If you know where to buy this version I'd love to hear about it.
I found it Rhino CD years ago don't know if they still have it but I'd check with Rhino records.
Was this song on that one?
What is the name of it?
He is playing a Fender Rhodes piano not vibes.
👍👍🙏😎🌈
Nice but the Ben Sidran version is the best and even better than Billy Joel's. Go and listen to the trumpet solo. I have got this band's first album which is pretty cool in the real sense of the word.
Their first album was the best. The gray one called Mark-Almond.
