Emile Smith Rowe, Arsenal's young striker, recently made his first appearance on the field since September following his recovery from groin surgery. The opportunity came in the 3-0 win against Oxford United in the FA Cup, where he came on as a 75th-minute substitute for Bukayo Saka, thus securing the team's place in the fourth round of the competition.
Speaking to the media after the final whistle, Smith Rowe said it was great to be back on the field with his teammates. He mentioned that it was difficult to be away for so long as he had never had such a long break before, but at the same time, he is happy to be back at a time when the team is top of the league and playing well. He credited the support he received from his team and family as invaluable, saying that the entire team and coach Mikel Arteta were always there and helped him get through this difficult phase.
Smith Rowe also mentioned the injury that set him back at the start of this season, saying he has been dealing with it since he was 18/19 but is now feeling great after his successful surgery. He even mentioned his ambition to play for the England national team, but now he just focuses on Arsenal and getting more minutes of game.
Coach Mikel Arteta also spoke about Smith Rowe's recovery, saying that he was practically with the team from the beginning of the surgery, participating in all meetings and trying to keep up with the knowledge and learning that needed to be applied in training every day. Arteta mentioned that it was a lot easier than he imagined and is very happy that Smith Rowe is back.
