"I know it looks like a mess, but it makes sense in my mind", every man ever on planet earth lmao. Great video man, I'm 21 and looking to start myself.
😂 I'm 62 years old and the very first video I watch, about something I've always wanted to learn, is done by a bright young man that is 17! Great video young man! Thank you for sharing and for the introduction. Wish me luck! I'll continue to watch and learn (I learn the way you do). 👍
Im 42 and stumbled across this, as black smithing has always tickled my mind. I was incredibly shocked how articulate and well spoken this kid is. He has a bright future in whatever endeavor he chooses.
@spritercramberrydotnet4990 having a background in woodworking will be very helpful for blacksmithing since you already have a good understanding of tools, shops, and fabrication! Especially if you want to get into knife making/tool making, woodworking skills will be valuable.
I’m turning fourteen in less than a month and living on a farm, and I’ve noticed my dad has to order a lot of supplies and metal and such, so I’ve decided that I should start blacksmithing to help him out, and when I saw this vid, this was the confirmation that I needed to start. You have a list of supplies, your opinion and tips and multiple options, you even told us that we didn’t need that big of a place! Seeing someone else who started around my age (17-3=14), I know that I can do that. I’m for sure subscribing, and thank you.
Im 40, been collecting knives for years and now wanting to get into making my own. That said.. Can’t wait for the day I tell people I learned from a 17 yr old kid off TH-cam! 🫡💯
I'm turning 17 in a couple weeks and I was thinking blacksmithing would be something that takes years to get into, your video helped clear my head about a few things and you've really motivated me. Thank you
I’m a 13 year old blacksmith which I do at home and it’s not hard at all to get started you just need something to heat your metal I suggest a propane forge designed for blacksmithing, an anvil, a hammer, heatproof gloves and forging tongs
Dude I love your videos! Awesome job! I’ve been wanting to get into blacksmithing, but I get so caught up in having all the “right tools” before I do something. You are showing that all you need is ambition and a couple of basic tools to get into this thing! And you are doing it in a freakin lifetime plastic shed… UNBELIEVABLE
all you really need to get started is something to heat metal, something to hold it, something to pound on and hit with and just go do it. I started with a piece of rail road rail, long handle pliers from Harbor Freight and a bucket forge made out of a metal bucket and plaster of Paris and a home made burner. You can get started and get better stuff as you learn.
I appreciate the kind words! And like Jim said, a basic forge isn’t too hard to make to get started!! Be safe, adapt, and make it happen! I hope you get to explore this awesome art!
You’re awesome, dude! I’m 41, retired from the Army, and looking for new hobbies. This is the exact type of intro video I was looking for. Subscribed, and keep up the good work!
life saver. It's always been a dream of mine to learn blacksmithing/bladesmithing. this is the perfect introduction video. thank you so much. Subscribed.
Thanks Todd, its good to be reminded that keeping it simple and getting it done is what is important; otherwise you’re just a tool collector! Keep up the great work 👍
Blacksmithing is my dream job, and I hope to get started soon, so I really appreciate the simplicity you've imbued into the beginning process for aspiring blacksmiths, great video, dude 🤘 keep up the good work, you've definitely got my subscription
I honestly think forging should be something people should at least experience once. I might try it myself because I definitely would like to learn and experience it.
Couple ideas for your shop, don't get rid of your water quench... add a bucket with oil, doesn't have to be fresh oil, I've seen blacksmiths use old engine oil for quench! Heck I've even done it! 2, if you know of a local Blacksmith close to you... go talk to him, he may just take you in to learn the trade,! Alot of blacksmiths are just proud you are interested and would be happy to teach you! Keep smithing!
Dude you are an inspiration! Best most to the point easiest digestible video on the topic I've been able to find and your a quarter of the age of the rest of these forgers. Keep it up dude
Getting my own place soon and definitely wanna get into smithing. Doesn’t have a garage but it has a decent sized shed. Once I’m all settled im definitely gonna look into building a shop in there
Awesome video. I have subscribed and begun watching your other videos. I am very interested in getting into it and your videos are the final push for it.
Go for it man! Just keep learning and you’ll see some great things! This is a bit of a late response I know, but I hope you’ve been able to try some things out!
@@ToddKoch I'm studying, learning, and watching everything. I want to give it a shot be it will be a slow process until I get everything and started to forge
That’s the most important thing! Keeping that interest is essential and learning all you can is the best thing you can do! That’s what’s helped me a ton!
I enjoy your video's. I am glad to see someone who I consider a "youngster" interested in this, I'm in my 60's and have been smithing for a while now. Keep up the good work and I think I noticed a spoke shave hanging on the wall? Care to show us how you made it?
Thanks, I am really glad I started so early and it’s great to know that people enjoy the videos! Not quite sure which tool you’re talking about, probably my drawknife? If so, I did make a video on that, I just posted it on a channel I used to do with my friend, here’s the video link: th-cam.com/video/cJ__XHdOT-A/w-d-xo.html
@@ToddKoch You are correct, it is called a draw knife. I have just always called them "spoke shaves" since they were used many years ago to shape the spokes on wagon wheels, not that I am that old. Thanks for the link, I will check it out.
I figure it was something along those lines, I just hadn’t heard someone call it that before! That’s cool though, I never knew that’s what they used to be used for. I just use it to shape up tool handles normally.
All is well with me, thanks for checking! I just started up my senior year of high school and I am a student body officer so I have been a bit busy lately. I do have a few videos I’m working on though, I’m hoping to get a video out sooner then later!
I loved your video! One question, is there a decent way to add handle scales without a drill press? They seem so pricey but it feels like a required tool. Thoughts?
Hey man, sorry for the late response! I’ve done a number of handle scales without a drill press, and they’ve turned out fine. Using a hand drill and good measuring methods can yield great results! However, using a drill press does make it way easier to be accurate. But we all gotta start somewhere!
I live in an apartment and as such its hard to get a big burly anvil and start hammering.i also checked for internships but they are very few in number and the internships are frowned upon in KSA and im an expat.any suggestions?
My guy what if one needs to make a claymore. How tall would the claymore have to be if one was 5'8. The heaviness is not much of a problem. Anyways good video and keep up the work
i only have one question i have no idea what to put my anvil on that’s sturdy it’s 88lbs. i live in a place where i don’t have access to a tree stump just need an idea thanks
Sorry I know this is way late but I built my stand out of 2x4s! You can also weld together stands if you have the means. But you commented this almost a year ago so probably figured it out haha!

I started with (and still use) rebar to learn how to forge. Scrap metal is a good option because then you're not losing money on practicing.
