  • This is one of the most $$$ I have spent on a coral frag. I have always been a big fan of Dendros, while they are NPS like the Sun Corals, their polyps usually stay open and readily accept food. Check out Supreme Reefs (www.supremereef...) for their impressive collection of corals!

    I am looking into one of these but dont want something to dirty up my tank with constant feedings but if you only have to feed 2 x a week than thats the same as my other corals. How did this do for you? How many times a week do you or did you feed it?

    Was that bubble algae in the top right of the frag tank at 0:26 mark of the video? Some don't think of it as a big deal but I turn the other way....that stuff is a nightmare!

    Great video pal. I love it's name. I've not seen on of them over here. Taking frags off corals used to scare me also but it's actually quite simple with the correct tools

    Awsome Video Man. Been in the Hobby for a year now and after seeing Dendros at a friends place and now your channel, it renewed my interest to pick up the coral which I managed to get a head here in Los Angeles. Since you have had yours for 2 weeks now, what do you reccommend to feed it? Does frozen mysis and brine work fine or live is what works best for you?

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I have been feeding mine a mix of frozen food and even fish flakes whenever I feed my fish. I think they like higher protein / chunkier food so brine may not cut it. Fauna Marin lps pellets have been recommended by the pros, I have a new bottle sitting next to the tank for the past week that I have yet to try.

      Inappropriate Reefer thx for the reply. quick question I noticed that part of my dendro's base is black and wondering is that normal or something to worry about. it's opening and still eating normally

    My dendro is usually open 18 hours a day and keep in mind that it will need the correct flow(med/low) for it to open a majority of the time for optimum health. I use fauna marin lps pellets as well.

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You folks that seems to know what you are doing are all on Fauna Marin LPS pellets. Even though I already have 5036564 types of food maybe I should go ahead and pick up a bottle as well.

      Around 40mins (in the Alexandria area). I am not sure if Supreme Reefs do walk-ins though, both times I was there to pick-up after I have purchased something online, you can check with Ben at supremereefs.com! I think in some way the major color overload helped me walk away without more stuff... I could not decide! LOL

    Never seen these in my LFS... may have to give these a try myself. Interested in seeing how this goes for you... and if feeding them hurts water quality ... good luck 👍🏾

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      These haven't showed up at my LFS in a long time... I was able to finally find one after posting on my local reef club's forum,; it may be worth checking in with your local reef club? My water quality seriously suffered when I tried to feed my old Sun Coral colony, even after I moved the colony outside the tank for feeding. In comparison, the Dendros are always open, grabbed food immediately and very little went to waste, it is a lot easier / cleaner than the Sun Coral I had! Will report back in a few weeks and see if I am still singing it's praises, lol.

    hi i was wanting to get me one a fat head dendron like yours and i was hoping to know how much you paid for it and if you could put in a word to see if you could find me one at your local stores i looked at the website supreme and i don't see it and also if you could give us a update on its progress in behavior what it seems to like in water flow lighting and feeding and how fast does it grow

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Steve, try contacting Supreme Reefs from his website, while I was there he had a few more frags healing up, he probably just did not add them to his site yet. My 3.5 head frag was $189, but it was discounted since they were running a promotion. Mine seems to like low flow in the shade (probably doesn't care too much about light). It is out most of the time and it is very easy to feed. I am not sure how fast it grows yet since I just got mine, but I do hear that they are relatively slow grower.

    i had problems with Kessils Changing the color of my corals as well; Turned everything either green or Red. i changed over to Radions, the Radions have a steep learning curve cause i killed a few of my SPS colonies. but once you got them dialed in correctly all the colors are vibrant as ever. when you go LED its hard to imagine having the hassle with Heat of Halides or changing bulbs of the T5.

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm running Radion over my tank as well (upgraded from G1 to G3), do you have issue with the disco light effect on the sand bed? Besides that, I am happy with the light... just wish the orange BTA would retain it's color under the Radion.

    • @cheseenlo
      @cheseenlo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i dont have the problem with disco ball effect. which program are you running ? that has a lot to do with it. its all about the color spectrum. if you use the wide angle lenses i think it will help with color blending better. have you read the ecotech coral lab study ? if not here is the link ecotechmarine.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Ecotech_CoralLab_WP1.pdf i am using the PHX14 you can probably use LPS/softie spectrum. i didnt believe in the radions until i found this spectrum, i was ready to throw in the towel all together lol

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the disco light effect, I believe I can lessen it by not having the surface agitated as much... but I feel like that is important. I have regular lens and not the wide angle one. =/
      Thanks for the Coral Lab paper WIlliam, I came across it before but this time I actually sat down and read it, lol. I have been using a "CoralLab" schedule that came with the Radion interface, I don't recall seeing the other schedules linked on the PDF, I may experiment with the LPS one because it seems to do more for color rendition / expression and my tank doesn't super light demanding SPS. Thanks William!

    • @cheseenlo
      @cheseenlo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      not a problem! you can probably find the Wide angle lenses on your local reef forum for rather cheap. if not if you call ecotech yourself, sometimes they will sell it to you for cheaper than whats listed on their website. you will not be sorry with swapping out the lenses color blending is so much better. i wouldn't stop the surface agitation as well. Good luck buddy ! i really enjoy watching your videos

      I wasn't aware of Dendo, most likely from PNG is illegal. CITIES perments change so much. In 2008 I have 70 colonies of 5 or more heads. I supplied "Aussie corals" with great success.

Another idea is to start a Patreon account, I know quite a few channels do that; essentially people contribute a few $ per video you release on TH-cam as a way of encouraging the content creator. Would hate to see you tear down the large tank. Hang tough!

    Rip local LFS, they are dropping like flys. It's hard for me to say this but Most reefers here in the DC area use Ben and Supreme. I just wish someone with his caliber, connections and aquarium skill set could open a LFS. It's about passion and connections. supreme has both!
    I guess I look at the industry jaded.My store and services were the rage 10 years ago.
    I had a 2200 square foot store. So a search on WAMAS for AquaCo aka The Aquarium Company.
    I had an overhead of 9,000.00 a month. I had corals at that time no one had. The fact is that 9,000.00 before I sold one coral. I could never make a decent living selling frags. My favorite coral is a sold coral. When I see a selection like in your video makes me cringe. Just one wrong move, done..... Huge investments gone.
    There are a few amazing guys around, Jason Fox for instance. I have never seen a selection like his, anywhere.
    I will have to say that most of the LFS store owners despise home based ventures that sell walk in retail. Now, selling and growing to maintain your hobby is amazing. E
    I'll say this, I don't care honestly. I am no longer in the hobby or trade. Don't plan or ever coming back to it. The industry had inflated so much, the tech is moving faster than hobbyist can afford. Especially lighting kits, but the newest greatest thing and tomorrow a better one arrives.
    I like your videos, you seem to be having so much fun. Stay passionate. Just remember, LFS need more support. Without them, Cherry Pickers wouldn't even have a chance to stay around.
    I'd love to chat sometime. I've always wanted to make a video on what it takes to thrive in the area. For instance in the last 6 years major companies like, aquaco, fins and feathers, pristine Aquarium and last but not least...... The Marine Scene. All huge players.... Gone.
    I leave with this. Please show me an acan frag that was chopped into tiny heads to quickly and be colony size. Tanks with bitsy coral frags on plugs look silly.
    Now, acropora. Done right with deep pockets are a great example of a coral that grows from a frag to colony.
    Supreme Reef just might be the way coral is bought and sold. Now, keeping fish is where the skill is at. Don't know many people doing the non LFS approach with fish.

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Sean, I did a search and read up on WAMAS, AquaCo was huge! I actually remember reading about your store on WAMAS and RC, but I was on the way out of the hobby during that time so I did not get a chance to visit, your store sounds amazing and it seems way ahead of it’s time, probably would still be one of the best if you bring it to the present. You are a legend.
      In terms of online vendors competing with LFS… do you think that they may be servicing different niche? Online vendors seems to stock very high-end corals that most LFS may be hesitant to bring in due to risk of it not being sold because of the high price-tag. I am not sure what the answer is, from what I am seeing as a consumer though, I feel like big chain stores like PetCo that caters towards the same walk-in audience may be a bigger competitor… especially now that they have redoubled their effort in the saltwater section, and I have definitely been guilty at shopping there as well, if that is a sin. =)
      AquaCo’s case was special though, because experienced reefers that like the finer things enjoyed hanging out at your store and you brought in some crazy stuff… so in this instance, yes, online vendors may be your direct competitor. =)
      I can understand the frustration of an LFS owner with huge overhead having to compete with home/online based business that was done more… agile. It seems to have some parallel to Taxi vs. Uber. It’s a huge deal in Taiwan and a few other countries right now. I don’t have an answer for this as well but I do understand.
      You are spot on for fish, I bought most of my fish in person, fish is something I have to cherry pick whenever possible and it is also something that I don’t mind spending extra money on to make sure I get the exact one I want! If I really can’t find what I want locally I would turn to LiveAquaria’s Diver’s Den. (I did order from FFExpress in the past as well)
      If you ever decide to go through with the video idea, please let me know! You are the OG of the local reef scene and have a huge amount of information and stories. It would be great to hear about how things were, what worked, what didn’t, and your view of the industry (especially since you are not holding back anymore, lol).
