I taught Catholic Apologetics for 20 years in Las Vegas, NV. People brought non-Catholics to my classes and today we had about 6 converts from that class. One is a Catholic Priest today!
@@tony1685 It's interesting that you say Catholics don't keep the ten commandments when the Catechism teaches that we must obey them and if we do not obey them then we must confess and repent (CCC 1858, 1962). In fact, the Catechism explicitly says that we must keep the commandments (CCC 2052).
@@tony1685 Presumably, you are going to disagree with this, but here's how the Catholic Church understood this issue since the apostolic age. St. Paul tells us at Col. 2:16-17 that the ceremonial aspect of the old law is no longer binding for the Christian faithful, explicitly including the "Sabbath day". The word used in this verse to describe it, "shadow" or "skain" is also used for the animal sacrifices of the Old Covenant in Hebrews 10:1. So we know that while we're still bound to the Commandment in keeping a holy Sabbath day, the day specific to the Jews was no longer binding on us; in context, Paul was dealing with Judaizers who were telling Christians they had to be circumcized, continue animal sacrifices, and keep the Sabbath, as some more recent Protestant denominations like the SDAs do (in part) today. In Hebrews 4:9, Paul says there remains a Sabbath rest to be honored. He explains that this has been fulfilled and superseded by a new day in the preceding verses: For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” And again in this place he said, “They shall never enter my rest.” Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, *again he sets a certain day,* “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, “Today, when you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” *For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak later of another day.* So, then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God; for whoever enters God’s rest ceases also from his labors as God did from his. So what day are we commanded to meet now that Christ has fulfilled the Sabbath? The first day of the week, Sunday. The day the Lord rose, which is perfectly fitting for this. In Acts 20:7, Luke 24:30-31 we see "the breaking of bread" - meaning the Eucharist - happening in house churches on the first day of the week (see also 1 Cor. 11:18-23). Again, I know this won't convince you, but this is why, historically, Christians worship on Sundays. With the beginning of new "Bible-only" "interpret it yourself" sort of traditions (like the SDAs, who were only founded in 1863) apart from this interpretive tradition, it's understandable why the context and interpretation of the first Church was lost.

Trent horn was one of the biggest reason I'm soon catholic, I was watching an anti catholic video from Mike Winger, down in the comments someone said Trent horn did a good rebuttal on this video, I as a protestant wanted to see what Trent had to say, I absolutely hated it because Trent had valid rebuttals against Mike's claims. I'm a truth chaser, whenever someone says what I believe is false and their claim is valid I instantly rethink what I believe, that night I decided to look more into catholism and be open minded to truth.
Trent is the reason I am now Catholic. I am planning on getting baptized soon. I used to be Mormon but Trent, and some other Catholics, spoke the truth through love and there was no arguement that could hold water from my bishop or anyone in my ward. Thank you Trent. Keep the faith.
Me too, me too! I was Mormon and just came into the Catholic Church at Easter Vigil 2022. Stay with it, my friend. The Eucharist is worth everything else and more.
@@tony1685 one thing I love about Catholicism is what it teaches me about the Bible. Everyone else quotes this scripture or that scripture and uses it as a proof for what they believe. It's completely confusing because everyone disagrees and they all have their favorite verses to prove their side. It can make the Bible seem nonsensical and untrustworthy, which is the position the Mormon church takes. The Catholic Church has helped me to see all of those verses within the context of the entire Bible. Now, instead of confusing, the Bible is beautiful and harmonious and oh so Catholic.
@@tony1685 also, just want to let you know, I didn't rush it. Coming from 5 generations of Mormonism to become Catholic was a gargantuan decision for me. It took years of study and prayer to bring me to the joy I have received through my baptism, confirmation, and the Eucharist. Start by researching which commandments you think the Catholic Church is breaking. Then study that Catholic teaching/practice in depth to find out if it's really a violation. Spend 3 years in intense study, like I did. Don't rush to judgment.
@@tony1685 It does teach me to keep God's commandments, yes. Through the Catholic Church I have learned about the Ten Commandments in more depth than I had ever dreamed was there. The Ten Commandments are often used by Catholics to examine ourselves before we go to confession. This requires an in depth understanding of the Ten Commandments, because on the surface they seem so basic. They seem legalistic, but the Catholic church teaches beautifully all the ways that we can elevate them to meet not just the requirements of the law of Moses, but all the requirements of the new and eternal covenant that Christ brought to us. I highly recommend googling "ten commandments examination of conscience" to gain a greater understanding of how well you are living the ten commandments. It's helped me be more aware of my actions and how I can better follow God's commandments.
The lack of access to Apologetics could have been one of the reasons I was misled into being a prot. After 20 years of being a drifter, even further towards Deism, people like Trent Horn, Matt Fradd, Father Rich Pagano(and his bros) brought me back to Rome Sweet Home... and I thank God for you people.
I am a catholic and I'm finishing a PhD in philosophy. I'd love to explain and defend the faith but I think the only place I can do that is in academic journals. I'd like to get my philosophy to the popular masses.
Amen! Catholic apologetics isn't just a job for bishops and priests or popes for that matter. It's for ALL people, whether you're a student, a family man or whatever your status in life is.
Trent, I want to deeply thank you for being such an inspiration. You're one of the main reason I'm a full time apologist today. There are practically none in my country (France).
Here's my favorite description of the place our Blessed Mother has: God is our Father and Jesus is our Brother. Every family needs a mother so Jesus gave us His.
Apologetics is really what I needed in middle school/high school. Any sort of philosophy even. And I even went to Catholic schools too. This faith is so beautiful, intelligent, and deep. We need to do a much better job of showing that
Thank you Trent! You’re a hero for the Catholic faith and I couldn’t have converted with out you. Several of your books have inspired me so much. I love writing about apologetics as well and politics so I hope I can help our country and the Church & Lord with my work! I appreciate the words of encouragement to all of us whom you have inspired
@@tony1685 Catholicism doesn't follow God's truth or your false interpretation of God's truth? Come on you have to be more specific what am I to do with a reply like this?
@@tony1685 "Be specific". What do you not understand about that? You're here talking about ignoring and choosing which commandments to obey but again, BE SPECIFIC! ELABORATE! @@gk7754 I agree with you 100%. This tony guy is relentless as well as ruthless when it comes to attacking the faith. If you avoid throwing your pearls to him, he will get disinterested and prowl somewhere else. Please pray for him.
@@tony1685 I'm not an expert on this topic, but I've always thought that the moral command to keep holy the last day of the week was fulfilled by Jesus Christ, such that (as Saint Paul noted in Col. 2:16-17) we are no longer bound to many of the ritual observances of the Jews. Of course, Catholicism preserves the real heart of the command in a way by observing the first day of the week since we are now living in a kind of new creation. Acts 20:7 and 1 Cor. 16:2 gives us clues as to how the first Christians seemed to think the first day of the week was important... I don't think Scripture alone will give us a slam dunk answer, and debates were there in the early stages of the Church. I think you probably can see how people honestly seeking the Truth could conclude Sunday worship is the right way, no?
@@tony1685 which verse have you given me which says anything remotely close to saying scripture alone is the sole infallible rule of faith? I’ve asked you many times and you’ve given me cop out answers that don’t directly answer the question, and when pressed you simply dodged. Thanks to you and all the awesome Catholic apologist in the US, I’ve recently started an Catholic apologist channel in my local country (Thailand) since in Thai, Christianity is very minor (less than 2% of the population) and all the TH-cam content creators relating to the matter is 90% Protestant, which they most of the time Mis-represent the Catholic Church when ever they make their content. Keep up the good work, I will try hard on my part may God bless us all in our journey
Thanks so much for this video! I started listening to Catholic Answers and other apologetics on TH-cam when, as a fallen away Catholic, I was hearing so much misinformation to downright hateful comments about Catholicism from Protestants whom I was around. I was born and bred Catholic, attending Catholics schools so I knew what these Protestants were saying was wrong, but didn’t know how to defend it. When I returned to the Church after 25 years away (never “went prot”), I began to make comments (dialoguing??) with anti- Catholics on Catholic sites. I then began making comments on anti-Catholic videos and explaining where they had gone wrong. Bottom line is that I figured that in this day and age, God needed all the warriors He could get. I’m retired and not super healthy so theology degree is not in the cards for me, but I help where I can. I’m happy to see you promoting apologetics in even small ways! God bless you and I have learned so much from you and many others on Catholic Answers. Keep up the good work!

@@tony1685 I learned that Catholics were very grounded in Scripture and Protestants ignore and manipulate Scriptures. Protestants add words to Scripture, redefine words, take words away... And then Protestants get trapped in a corner very quickly and always need to change the subject. Then Protestants get hostile while Catholics generally remain charitably. Someday the scales will fall from your eyes, hopefully by the time Christ returns.
@@tony1685 YOU try the Bible. The bible compared to Catholic teachings from the 1st century to modern day brought me into the Catholic Church. I don't know how you can have eyes but can't see how Protestantism is nothing but manipulation. Someday you will see and be back in the Church, unless you want to reject Jesus to His face.
_Protestant vs Catholic message forums_ So, you never talk to atheists, then? This is just an internal dispute in Christianity about _which_ slightly different version of the same basic superstition you'll follow? Do you even talk to _Muslims?_ As an atheist, I shouldn't be surprised by this. But I still am, I guess. This always seems to be about preaching to the choir. After all, I see no reason to think that _any_ god is real. Do you have *one* piece of good evidence, specific enough and in enough detail that I can judge it for myself, that your god is real, rather than just imaginary? Isn't _that_ something you'd need to demonstrate first, before you start arguing over which specific version is best?
@@Bill_Garthright Actually Protestants and Catholics are VERY different. We both believe born of a virgin, Jesus died for our sins, and have the same New Testament, but that's where it ends pretty much. Everything else is different. We don't agree on many things including the nature of Jesus's Sacrifice. Why would I care about Atheists and their nonbelief? I believe in God and atheists don't. I believe it's impossible for anything to exist without a creator. Nothing can come from nothing. So why didn't I research the Muslim faith? I dud eventually. At the time I didn't know anything about it. I was a believer in God and I believed the bible was True. When I was done bouncing from Protestant Church after Protestant Church, I questioned the bible. Why did I believe it? Where did it come from? How did these books come together? Who or what Church did it? I was starting to wonder if I should even believe Christianity is True. Why should I believe this book just cause it says it's the word of God? I asked my Protestant pastor some of these questions and his answer about where the bible come from how did it come together was too generic, "just the early Christians" "But who where they, which Church? Wouldn't the Church who put the bible together to be the True Church?" Nothing. He wouldn't answer. I left and prayed to God. I told Him I needed the real Truth. I need to know which Church is the True Church and how the bible came together. I need to see other historical documents. I give up if you don't lead me to the Truth with historical proof, not just biblical proof. Everyone distorts the bible to make it say what the want". He answered and very quickly. I didn't have to look. Everything I needed to know fell in my lap. All the historical documents and then I needed to deal with the idea the Catholic Church, the Church everyone convinced me to avoid ends up being the real Truth. So you're an unbeliever. Just because you THINK God doesn't exist doesn't mean you're right. Too bad atheists don't like "anecdotal evidence" because I can give you so many stories of how I've experienced God the Father and Jesus personally. I don't really care. Your loss and He'll be revealing Himself to the world very soon and you'll be given your last chance to accept or deny. Hopefully you accept your own "anecdotal evidence" and accept. Atheists are always in my prayers.

I've heavily considered making up a youtube channel to help explain Catholic beliefs, where they originate from, and why. You gave me more confidence is doing so. Thank you.
So true. "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few". I feel like Catholics are really underrepresented on some subreddits I've come across. There have been more charitably and knowledgably respond as of late, which is great. The arguments are very easily refuted but most go unchallenged.

The parish has been through a major overhaul since we got a new traditional priest in 2011. The kids in my classes are so advanced due to the knowledge and devotion of their parents, so I have to make it a point to study so I can stay ahead of them! I've learned more in the past five years than I did in my first 50, including 8 years of Catholic school. Catholic Answers has been one of my main sources.
Trent, thanks so much for this video!!! When my wife heard it, she was shocked: she was like, were you saving this or did he seriously just upload this video? I've felt called to become a full-time apologist for years, having converted to Christianity after speaking to Dr. Peter Kreeft. That's been building for a long time until a few crazy occurrences this week really pushed me forward (including meeting Tim Staples and possibly setting up to record my conversion story with Premier Christian Radio). This video being uploaded was the culmination of my discernment to go all in. Time to surrender to divine providence and get going!
Hey Trent! Thank you so much for posting this video. You brought up some great tips for which I am grateful. I am a convert to the Catholic faith and want to have a future in apologetics. Funny enough, I started this TH-cam channel a few weeks ago to track my progress theologically and to share some of my story and thoughts. So, it looks like I might be on the right track! I am only a senior undergrad at the moment (at a Baptist college), and I hope to enroll in a Catholic graduate school doing classes online (or maybe in person). You are by far one of my biggest influences for what I want to do with my life, and I cannot thank you enough. Blessings!
Too many people are becoming apologists who should not be. One should certainly learn the faith for their own path of salvation. But to become a debater and writer like Trent Horn is another matter.
The more you know and the better you understand, the more severely you will be judged, unless your life is the more holy. Do not be proud but fear. - Thomas a Kempis, The Imitation of Christ.
Hi Trent! Just wanted to say this video could not have come out at a better time. I just started this channel in which I commentate from a Catholic perspective about videogames as I play them. Just want to say that you and the rest of the Catholic Answers team have been a large part how I came to know much of the faith. And you are absolutely right; reading scripture and the CCC will get you surprisingly far. Hope to spread that knowledge to those who otherwise would never have looked up the answers. Many people love video games, so why not turn it into a way to glorify God?

Fantastic video. Very inspiring. The Catholic faith is beautifully true, but many people don't know it as much as it deserves to be properly known. God bless catholic apologists.
My journey to the Catholic Church is mostly affected by Catholic Apologetics. It’s been the major influence in helping me process the Faith. I haven’t even started RCIA and I’m already engaging in Catholic apologetics as friends and family members are asking me serious questions and presenting hard challenges. I love learning more of the Catholic Church, but I could never go back to school for a degree in this - still trying to pay off loans for my Protestant degrees and raising a family. I’ve wondered if God is leading me to be an apologist to those of my Protestant background, since it gets very little attention (Wesleyan Holiness) from Catholics. Who knows.
@@tony1685 you might be disappointed to know that it was my love and serious study of the Scriptures that led me to Catholicism (I have a background in Biblical Studies and started applying to programs for a PhD in Old Testament before I realized how biased and limiting so many of the programs are)
Trent thank you for your work. I could use some direction from anyone that might have insight for my plight. My daughters have suffered a very large betrayal by their mothers live in boyfriend. When i discovered this my world fell apart because i shifted all my attention to my children. I literally gave away my property maintenance business. I only know that forgiveness is key. I decided to consecrate myself to St. Augustine of Hippo and do a pilgrimage from Windsor to Toronto at the St Augustine Monastery. I started training by walking between 20-30k daily with only my 65L backpack. This training led me to the homeless, sick, mentally ill, addicted souls. My faith runs deep and because i have a very stable mental illness and i was homeless when i was a teen myself. I discovered such a great need in our city and very few tending to their needs in a meaningful way. I take interviews and pictures as we panhandle together or eat out of a trash bin over a conversation. Since July 29th i decided to stay on the streets full time and make this the beginning of my pilgrimage. My heart is always to bring people of God together, despite religion. I wholeheartedly trust in our RC faith and i don’t disguise it, but i don’t make that my personal mission. I serve better as a padre or chaplain. I reached out to the area priests but they are overwhelmed with 3 parishes each. I feel alone out here. I see very good hearted protestants out on the streets but unless they live there with us, they miss the point. I don’t see any Catholic layperson as hard as i try. The anti-abortion pickets, the open bible studies, the push pull from all denominations….these don’t help. One person at a time with enough effort put into them, they will come to understand that forgiveness is the key. perhaps one of St. Peters key. (little tongue and cheek). I still want to do my pilgrimage to St. Augustine Monastery and continue to live on alms, but how can I motivate others that so much more help is needed. Especially in our own yards. God bless you if you read this far. J.T.
Hey Trent, thank you for doing what you do, you've been a powerful instrument God had used to get me interested in apologetics, keep up the great work, ours such a blessing for us young Catholics!
Former catholic here. I enjoy this channel and learn from it regardless whether I agree on each topic. I appreciate how Trent discusses and debates issues. So glad you mentioned needing both evangelism and apologetics. I believe most times you need to do both when witnessing.
I applaud you for being fair minded. I am not a protestant but I listen to pastors who have good messages. They just present the bible and let people make their own individual decision.
apologetics is the best thing to happen in my faith journey. i learned so much from everyone at Catholic Answers, and also some protestant apologists like Frank Turek, who is very respectful towards Catholicism even though he has his information about the Church all wrong, haha.
You are my got too guy. I lead an adult ministry on Fort Lee called Sustaining the Fath! I’d actually like to be a Catholic apologist, even though I’m Protestant. Obviously, I won’t be the best one, but I get a certain thrill of learning how the “silly”, “ritualistic”, even absurd looking, Catholic faith actually does have good reasons & theories for why they believe what they do. And even though I don’t believe all those things myself, I take enormous pleasure in sharing that thrill with other people who have the same view I had. It’s an artistic thrill, taking something that seems absurd, & showing how it actually makes a type of sense. I recently find myself saying to other Protestants, “Yeah, I don’t see why RCs make a dogma out of such-&-such, but they do actually have this really interesting argument to support it…”

I love the robes & the hats & the candles & the icons & buildings, etc.. But, come on, it can easily come off as a little silly. And don’t try to tell me that was all Jesus’ idea!
Catholics have to drag their opponents into a theological and hermeneutical black hole so that a verse doesn’t mean really anything. Then they can make it say what the Magisterium teaches.
Hello Mr Trent Horn. I love and appreciate how you calmly and academically defend the faith. Your work has had a huge impact. However, there's one area I would love for you to do an article or broadcast of. It's on the mark of the beast. I feel this is the one area we fail at. The theory feels dangerously antiquated and should probably be revisited. It doesn't make sense that Nero was the beast or that it refers to this time in history. I really hope you can cover this topic. It's extremely important that the church addresses this. I believe Vigano has it right. Thank you and God bless.
Another option to get started: become a Catechist. I teach a Year 10 class, it takes up only 1 hour every fortnight. You will learn so much, build up skills you'll never get elsewhere, and glorify God to an audience who would never receive the message elsewhere had you not turned up.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to become Catholic. I'm Charismatic now and love my church but after taking my pastors Leadership course for one semester, I'm convinced this is the right choice. Just trying to figure out if I should finish it since I'll need to do RCIA
I’ve been studying the faith for a while now and just want to say: even if you don’t take it that seriously you’ll still be able to defend the faith against normal people, who didn’t study “Anti-Catholicism”. Just watch Jimmy, Trent or Matt Fradd, he is great on the issue of p*rnography and masturbation, and you will be able to explain yourself and sound reasonable. You wont convince most people but you could still make them change their mind about Catholicism being unreasonable and only for indoctrinated idiots. Have a great time studying the faith. God bless
15:00 I feel like we need expert Old Testament apologists. Most people focus on the Resurrection, which is fair, but the arguments I've heard from many top apologists on Old Testament matters are significantly weaker.
Please pray for me as i'm discearning the call to become an apologist. I want to bring back de catholic philosophical and theological tradition back by specialising in metaphysical and epistemological thomism.
If you just want to get the basics and not spend a fortune or years learning then I suggest a series of books called Beginning Apologetics by by Frank Chacon and Jim Burnham. They are very affordable paperbacks and written in simple language easy to understand. It's all about being a good person (none of us are saints) and sharing the faith with love, clarity and charity. Viva Cristo Rey!
I been moved to start my journey in this field for the Spanish community!! The Spanish community is so lost and wrong about the catholic church and i want to make a difference!
I have often wondered why apologetics isn't part of the part of the preparation process for confirmation. Since the normal procedure in our church is to separate the sacraments of baptism (for infants) and confirmation (for adults) why do we not require a more rigorous preparation for the latter? I taught in a Catholic School, and nowhere in the official religious curriculum for junior high through high school was there anything at all provided to defend their faith. Heck, I had to take seminars to maintain my status as a catechist and in some cases I was appalled by poor quality of explaining our faith by diocesan officials (priests) to fellow Catholics! So what I guess I'm saying is that an important way to start is teaching the truths of Catholicism to Catholics.
Hi Trent and Trent's fans, I hope you'll allow for this, since it's kind of sort of related to your video I feel. I am a recent graduate with a BA in both philosophy and theology, and along the lines of what you've been discussing, I've started a small TH-cam channel a few months ago. I decided to start by doing faith-related reviews of VR video games, as that was becoming very popular at the time, and it seemed a simple thing to do while I finished studying to start to put some content out there. My goal is to actually move into more strictly philosophical and theological content, while keeping a mix of culturally relevant stuff too, like you do here. Aside from this, I am also a very amateur fiction writer, obviously of a Catholic style. I've actually been releasing my first story on my TH-cam channel in audio form with text/subtitles, but it is really hard to be seen unless you have a robust social media presence. I however can't stand social media and struggle to use it. All I have for myself is a Twitter, but I try to stay off of it. So really I just wanted to say, if anyone is maybe into checking out some fiction, the story is called Beyond Lumina on the channel Nerds Templar. It is a space fantasy story, and each episode is about 10 written pages. Sorry for pandering on your channel, Trent, but as you've said in a previous video about becoming a writer, I'm trying to get some experience, but it's really hard with no feedback! And no hard feelings if you decide to delete this.
Unfortunatelly in my country apologetics is basically dead. Neverthless I was inspired by your work (and also from other christian apologists) and followed your example doing apologetics on social media.
Hello Sir, I want to first thank you for break down and your efforts to create more apologists in our faith (me being one of them who would like to pursue the art). Other then CatholicAnswers, is there a community I could become a part of or a group that I could bounce ideas off of that you might suggest? I am focusing on what you mentioned with finding just 1 area to be really good at and want to make sure I am adding to the cause and not just reinventing the wheel, per say. I look foward to hearing back from you if you feel it deserves a video (I need to figure out how to listen to your pod casts) and hope that God blesses you and your work. May the Holy Spirit continue to help you guide those to the truth and speak with the authority becoming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in service to God.
I have been watching and enjoying your videos for a few months now and I especially liked this one on how to become an apologist. I was curious; you recommend becoming an expert in one thing. What do you consider to be your one thing, or the first thing, about which you became an expert?
The problem I have with Catholic apologists, they form their opinions and theology on sources outside of the scriptures. Then what ends up happening, they take their formed theology, and bring it with them into the scriptures. What ends up happening, without realizing it, they are actually molding the scriptures around their already formed theology. Ephesians 2:20 uses past tense, already laid. Paul did not have in mind, one to form their theology on a foundation outside of scriptures. This also explains why Roman Catholic apologists lack discernment when reading church history.
The problem with Protestants is they think the only way a particular interpretation of scripture is true, is because it’s not how Catholics interpret it.
@@halleylujah247 lol no, but without Catholics apologists then I would have no one to present the other side, so we can compare interpretations side by side.
You cannot underestimate the danger of being an apologist, ohhh boy the destruction you could bring if not done right, Id reccomend looking up to the Catholic answers apologists, Brant Pitre and Scott Hahn etc. There are a lot of Christian apologists who do very well on the intellectual side but butcher the other side of things, some do it in big ways some in smaller ways. Some examples are David wood and Sam Shamoun.
I’m seeing this video, and it’s like God might be calling me to be an apologist. -_- I would make an awful apologist! Someone recently walked into our Bible study class I was leading at church with the intent of convincing people to become apologists. If I see this a 3rd time somewhere else I might finally take the plunge. But! I’m fully conscious that I would be awful at it.
I've wanted to do this for a long time, and even started on youtube 6 years ago (when the New Atheists were ascendant) as uncommon_sense. I also wanted to as a cradle-Catholic as all the good ones are converts 😉. My problem is that while I know the Bible and Catechism well, I can't remember or cite passages. I still have plenty to talk about but always now can't due to lack of self belief
The way you memorise the citations is to have online discussions with people, when you get challenged you will need to find the references. When you receive the same challenges multiple times you will become familiar enough to cite the passages from memory.
_My problem is that while I know the Bible and Catechism well, I can't remember or cite passages._ Bible passages mean nothing to us atheists. Or did you just plan to talk to the people who already agree with you? Is this only about poaching from other denominations of Christian, then?
@@Bill_GarthrightNot at all... atheists often cite Bible passages (usually OT/ Leviticus) to prove some point, which would require a counter or context quote to validate/invalidate what the atheist cited. And no... 'poaching' is of no interest: this would be evangelising... I'm more interested in apologetics: answering questions/criticisms
Hi Trent have you done a video response to The Illusion of Free Will by Aperture or is a response in the works? I hear the research cited in the video is dubious at best.
@@yajunyuan7665 correct, he is putting in a ton of work lately. Send the question to Dr. David Anders, interested to see his response. I think Catholic Answers did a video on it awhile back.
I would recommend some of the work of the Thomistic Institute, or the Angelicum`s TH-cam channel (yes they have one), the work of Jonathan Pageau though he is Orthodox crosses with this realm often, Dr.Virveke does alot of good work in this realm as well though he is not a member of the faith. As expected Word on Fire has some good basic resources on the topic of free will as well. Also the Society of Catholic Scientists is an overall good set of sources. The Lumen Christe Institute can be good or the Franciscan University of Steubenville though they tend to be more towards the biblical end of things, as do the Coming Home Network. There is also Inspiringphilosophy who has a few though much of his work is Biblical Archaeology. Then there are two episodes of Catholic Answers Focus dealing with arguments against Free Will, one from the philosophical perspective, and one from the Calvinist perspective. One can counter a topic without doing a direct rebuttal by looking at the more general. Most arguments against free will rely on more impact than substance anyway and some may to be nonfalsifiable because they rely on stating despite what we see and know that there is some unseen other thing that really puppeteers us around so may be like fighting a conspiracy theory. Intellectually honest versions however are similar but are based in philosophy and/or science, these are usually assuming naturalism, so if you can counter those assumptions their arguments will tend to fall apart but be ready to defend on these grounds then, The overall basis of most anti-free will arguments is a stance called determinism, so if you find good counters for that (I had some for awhilr but I am rusty on the topic), you can cut the foundation out from anti-free will arguments. Remember also, some TH-cam channels just want views so they fill themselves with the stuff that their niche may want to hear. Go with first principles if you can and build up from there. In the long-run it is best to do that as your structure doesn`t rely on one given argument. Finally, check through my archives espescially under Spread the Word of God`s Truth, Nature, Dimensional Shift, and maybe Mysteries Unknown, if in doubt, check Light of the Lord as I tend to dump anything really good in there anyway. These are good for general study in the topic, but if you need anything specific, let me know and I will find some more specific resources.
@@yajunyuan7665 He is one of the four that Dr.Jordan Peterson had together on his video The Four Horsemen of Meaning episode, he is the neuroscientist. One thing that I found a bit alarming however is that he and Mr.Pageau both keep bringing up something about human beings being not a singular consciousness but a collection of conscious agents. Now maybe they are hinting at the passions or it is on some more superficial level from the intellect and will or it is how the will and intellect interact with different phantasms or something, but, I can easily see that spiralling down many bad paths. Reading about Bruno Giodano just made me evaluate things more stringently and that idea passing around that circle seems like something to be cautious about. Of course it was way above my head, so hopefully I am being more cautious than I need to be. Rather that than going off a spiritual cliff.

Ive been thinking on writting a book in regards to apologitcs contra hinduism. Catholic answers has very very little on it or is just not very nuanced about it. Trent do you know any Catholic apologist that studied hinduism? Or any resources in regards to that?
Watch the TH-cam video, Sedevacantists are as good as Protestants at spotting "accidental" paganism (Catholic Answers reply) to see why there hasn't been much contra Hinduism.

@@tony1685 I am sorry bud but I dont know if you've read the letters of Paul. In his words: "You are separated from Christ, you who are trying to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace". If you want to be justified by the law, you have to keep all of it. The New Testament affirms this up and down. Otherwise, do you still think circumcision is necessary? Do we still have to sacrifice animals at the temple? Do we still have food prohibitions? All those were perpetual ordinances for the people Israel. Even the sabbath is done away with. Even if I grant you that the Sabbath remains, the commandment was to "not work" on the sabbath. Not, worship the Lord Jesus Christ for he had not come yet. Jesus himself said that work can be done on the sabbath for a good reason. (Mt 12: 1-14) Which essentially shows the commandment is not absolute. We worship on Sunday because that was the day he resurrected (Mt 28:1). And thats when the Apostles gathered together to worship as well (Acts 20:7).

Weirdly, he can't tell his own chosen people from ordinary Egyptians and doesn't even know where they live.* And he had been leading up to this, apparently, because after every plague he 'hardens the heart' of Pharaoh so that he wouldn't let the Hebrews go. He had actually been planning this genocide all along just to impress people with his powers. *And still no-one thought even this mass killing in a single night worth making a note of in any Egyptian records.* Exodus 12:1-30.
He explains that this has been fulfilled and superseded by a new day in the preceding verses:
For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” And again in this place he said, “They shall never enter my rest.” Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, *again he sets a certain day,* “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, “Today, when you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” *For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak later of another day.* So, then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God; for whoever enters God’s rest ceases also from his labors as God did from his.

Of course, Catholicism preserves the real heart of the command in a way by observing the first day of the week since we are now living in a kind of new creation.
Charity is the most necessary virtue if someone wants to do apologetics, and the virtue where Trent most excels
If I recall correctly, you added 'new' to your name because you want to be a new charitable person
@@yajunyuan7665 eh, sort of. I've had this account for a while, just decided to make a switch because I was getting nasty at times on my other acct, and wondered if switching would help, somehow.
I definitely have fallen short in charity in the past, which I think is a kind of spiritual sloth.
I have never seen Trent with a different hair style. It’d be awesome to see him with puffy hair and a beard. 😁
Are there any Catholic evangelized using the comedy rout to spread the Good News.
Protestant vs Catholic message forums or FB groups is what caused me and many others to convert. You learn a lot VERY quickly through those.
@tony is a 7th Day Adventist anti Catholic TROLL. A retired pastor and a nasty piece of work at the end.
_Protestant vs Catholic message forums_
So, you never talk to atheists, then? This is just an internal dispute in Christianity about _which_ slightly different version of the same basic superstition you'll follow? Do you even talk to _Muslims?_
As an atheist, I shouldn't be surprised by this.
We both believe
born of a virgin, Jesus died for our sins, and have the same New Testament, but that's where it ends pretty much.
A great and easy (and maybe the most important) way to start is to volunteer at your local parish as a Catechist for their Faith Formation program.
For any aspiring Catechists out there who maybe feel a little underwhelmed by their local parish’s catechism program, which is the situation I found myself in at my parish, I actually wrote my own program and got it approved by my parish pastor.
Below is syllabus for the program. It includes all of the essentials. Trent, as an amateur Catholic Apologist, this was a great thing to watch. I got into apologetics a few years ago, and have been studying my craft off and on. I mostly dealt with anti-Catholic protestants in Discord servers or "christian" forums, but that is the breadth of my experience.
I love your passion for Jesus, Trent. I'm a protestant but am very warm to Catholics and their work in the world. Appreciate all you do.

I volunteered for Vacation Bible school in the summer of 2018 and was then asked to be a catechist that fall. This will be my fifth year doing so. Many of the students in my classes are homeschooled.
Awesome, how are things going? I’m on a similar journey.

Trent you are absolutely awesome in your own ways!
The funny thing is, I read this right after Trent said that.

Blessings!
This video is exactly what I needed. Thanks Trent as always! 😇♥️🕊
The: “That’s a good question, can I get back to you with that later?” Comment I believe will help me very much thank you 🙏🏼 God bless
Too many people are becoming apologists who should not be. One should certainly learn the faith for their own path of salvation. But to become a debater and writer like Trent Horn is another matter.
The more you know and the better you understand, the more severely you will be judged, unless your life is the more holy. Do not be proud but fear.

You’re an inspiration for many Catholics. Thank you.
Trent was the pretty much the first one to introduce me to catholism and now I'm going to rcia soon, Today I was at Ss Simon and Jude cathedral and I was talking to a deacon about why I'm interested in catholism and why I saw non denominationalism as knock-off christianity, I mentioned Trent horn as my turning point to learn about catholism, and the deacon asked me if I've met Trent horn, I was like "Met Trent horn?" He told me Trent used to live around pheonix. That leads me to ask, will you be around here again Trent horn? I deeply want to see if I can start a Saint Paul street Evangelism group and I live around Ss Simon and Jude, but I still need to get through rcia
Fantastic video. Very inspiring. The Catholic faith is beautifully true, but many people don't know it as much as it deserves to be properly known. God bless catholic apologists.
Awesome practical stuff. Super useful
Who knows.
Welcome home!!!!

So glad you mentioned needing both evangelism and apologetics. I believe most times you need to do both when witnessing.
I applaud you for being fair minded. I am not a protestant but I listen to pastors who have good messages. They just present the bible and let people make their own individual decision.
Why did you leave Catholic church? Jesus started Catholic church.
Nice shirt, Trent. 😀 May the Lord continue to bless you and use you to proclaim the truth that sets us free!
apologetics is the best thing to happen in my faith journey. i learned so much from everyone at Catholic Answers, and also some protestant apologists like Frank Turek, who is very respectful towards Catholicism even though he has his information about the Church all wrong, haha.
You are my got too guy. I lead an adult ministry on Fort Lee called Sustaining the Fath! Most popular Catholic apologists are quite good being both charitable and reasonable. One I've been reading lately is Dave Armstrong who is prolific
Dave Armstrong is good because he 100% accepts the material sufficiency of scripture, he only tries to make scriptural arguments with Protestants.
Thanks! I think a lot of what you just said is educate yourself, start small, specialize, but don’t isolate yourself.

I recently find myself saying to other Protestants, “Yeah, I don’t see why RCs make a dogma out of such-&-such, but they do actually have this really interesting argument to support it…”
Ami Jill Lavine is an New Testament scholar and she is Jewish. Gospel Simplicity channel has made some people Catholic and he isnt a Catholic. So go for it!

Jesus started Catholic church. Nothing silly about it. 2000 years strong!!!
@@johnyang1420 Sure, very loosely speaking. But practically speaking, the RCC is 99% accretions on the church Christ started. I think a lot of the accretions are valid deductions, but are unworthy of being dogmas if the NT authors didn’t deem it necessary to put them into writing.

Maybe just aim for the honor of being the conduit that God uses to save some souls.
I do want to be an apologist, and this is the best answer for my questions
Will you actually talk to atheists? Or only to the people who already agree with you?
Great video!
Unfortunatelly in my country apologetics is basically dead. Neverthless I was inspired by your work (and also from other christian apologists) and followed your example doing apologetics on social media.
Hello Sir,
I want to first thank you for break down and your efforts to create more apologists in our faith (me being one of them who would like to pursue the art).
Trent, can you give advice on the logistics of doing podcasts? What camera to use? Software?
I have been watching and enjoying your videos for a few months now and I especially liked this one on how to become an apologist. I was curious; you recommend becoming an expert in one thing. What do you consider to be your one thing, or the first thing, about which you became an expert?
"Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope"
I would like to become one, need a lot of tuning
Timestamp 7:17 are you saying the *effects* of the sacrifice are being presented? Or are you saying a Hebrews 9:25 presentation?
I thought you meant Catholic Answer’s were hiring 😆
Maybe if people donated more to the radio drive, they could hire

You cannot underestimate the danger of being an apologist, ohhh boy the destruction you could bring if not done right, Id reccomend looking up to the Catholic answers apologists, Brant Pitre and Scott Hahn etc. There are a lot of Christian apologists who do very well on the intellectual side but butcher the other side of things, some do it in big ways some in smaller ways. Some examples are David wood and Sam Shamoun.
I like the "Brant Pitre on why all Commandments have to be explicit" video on TH-cam
_My problem is that while I know the Bible and Catechism well, I can't remember or cite passages._
Bible passages mean nothing to us atheists.

I want this. I want to be an apologist all the time every day.

Trent, is there a way for me to email you?

Wow this is almost too coincidental. I just registered a domain to run a blog for apologetics. Please pray for me that I can be effective for advancing Gods kingdom.
Why not just talk to an atheist? Is anyone going to read your blog who doesn't already agree with you?
I'm an atheist. You can practice on me, if you like. If you click on my name here and go to my channel, you can easily find contact information. I'd be happy to hear from you. I always enjoy talking to intelligent people who disagree with me about religion.
Parishes need to have Apologetics classes for parishioners to take.

On a more serious note, the first edition of the 'New Community Bible' published by Indian Catholics had footnotes dealing with Hinduism but they had to remove them because of backlash.
@@yajunyuan7665 Any online references that preserved them?
@@LostArchivist Unfortunately not, I can't even find a photo of what the bible looked like to see if I can purchase it secondhand. I can only find the revised edition when searching.
@@yajunyuan7665 Normally I would ask for an ISBN but I do not believe Bibles have one. Was it actually produced and if so, was it published?
I am a little practiced in searching for Lost Media.
As Catholics were given all the answers in the back of the book but were rarely taught how to get to the answers through flipping the pages of scripture and knowing the material. That doesn’t work in math class. That shouldn’t work with our faith.

I would apply but I'm an idiot.
Anyone can learn!!!

I’m about to get my BS in Business and I want to try to apply for a MA in Theology at places like Layola and Augustine Institute (as they don’t require a theology or philosophy bachelors). I am worried that they won’t accept me though as a business major, what’s the best way to handle this situation?
Get at least a credit average in your BS and then if there are no prerequisites for the MA you should be in.
See what they say….there is nothing immoral about business.
*The Enuma Elish would later be the inspiration for the Hebrew scribes who created the text now known as the biblical Book of Genesis.* Prior to the 19th century CE, the Bible was considered the oldest book in the world and its narratives were thought to be completely original. In the mid-19th century CE, however, European museums, as well as academic and religious institutions, sponsored excavations in Mesopotamia to find physical evidence for historical corroboration of the stories in the Bible. ***These excavations found quite the opposite, however, in that, once cuneiform was translated, it was understood that a number of biblical narratives were Mesopotamian in origin.***
*Famous stories such as the Fall of Man and the Great Flood were originally conceived and written down in Sumer,* translated and modified later in Babylon, and reworked by the Assyrians ***before they were used by the Hebrew scribes for the versions which appear in the Bible.***
***In revising the Mesopotamian creation story for their own ends, the Hebrew scribes tightened the narrative and the focus but retained the concept of the all-powerful deity who brings order from chaos.*** Marduk, in the Enuma Elish, establishes the recognizable order of the world - *just as God does in the Genesis tale* - and human beings are expected to recognize this great gift and honor the deity through service.

Also discussed by Professor Christine Hayes at Yale University in her first lecture of the series on the Hebrew Bible from approx. 8:50.
From a Biblical scholar:
"Many stories in the ancient world have their origins in other stories and were borrowed and modified from other or earlier peoples. *For instance, many of the stories now preserved in the Bible are* ***modified*** *versions of stories that existed in the cultures and traditions of Israel’s* ***older*** *contemporaries.* Stories about the creation of the universe, a cataclysmic universal flood, digging wells as land markers, the naming of important cultic sites, gods giving laws to their people, and even stories about gods decreeing the possession of land to their people were all part of the cultural and literary matrix of the ancient Near East. *Biblical scribes freely* ***adopted and modified*** *these stories as a means to express their own identity, origins, and customs."*

*Let's briefly run through the 'ten plagues':*
First the rivers are turned to blood, all the fish die and the waters stink. No one has any water to drink. This lasted for seven days and would have resulted in mass deaths due to dehydration. Amongst the first to die would have been the children. *The author doesn't think to explain how the Hebrews were saved from this. No record of it was made anywhere in any Egyptian records.* Exodus 7:17-25.
This is followed by a plague of frogs which had somehow survived the rivers of blood that had killed all the fish. A mere inconvenience, nothing more, and a big stink when they all died, *but no record anywhere.* Exodus 8:2-13.
Next we have the plague of lice about which very little is said *and of course no record was made.* To a people who would have been accustomed to lice this would probably have been nothing remarkable. Exodus 8:16-18.
Then the flies. Apart from the land being 'corrupted', whatever that means, there don't appear to have been any ill effects from this and they disappear as quickly as they came a few days later. *Nothing worth recording there, obviously.* Exodus 8:21-31.
Now the author seems to begin to lose the plot and describes a 'grievous murrain' *which kills all the Egyptians' cattle, horses, camels and sheep.* ***They all died - hold that thought.*** *No Egyptian historian or keeper of official records deems it worthy of mention.* Exodus 9:3-6.
Next come the boils which afflict everyone and everything, including all the livestock ***even though they had been killed by the 'grievous murrain' a few days earlier,*** *apparently, and yet no-one thought to write anything down anywhere.* Of course, anyone who understood anything about microorganisms and the aeteology of boils would have described this as an infestation with Staphylococcus - the signs of faecal contamination - but the author was obviously unaware of these. Maybe he was just in too much of a muddle by now to care. Exodus 9:8-11.
Now it's hailstones so bad that every plant, every tree, every servant (for servant read slave) ***and even the livestock (that our story-teller has forgotten already that he killed off in the fifth plague before given them boils in the sixth) were harmed.*** It looks like our story-teller has learned from his earlier silly mistake with killing all the livestock too soon then having to resurrect them later. He mentions that some plants survive. Do I smell stinking fish again? *The greatest hail storm in all Egyptian history, apparently, but not worthy of being recorded.* Exodus 9:18-25.
It's the turn of the locusts and it's suddenly obvious why some plants had to survive. *How could the locusts turn Egypt into a barren desert if the hail storm had done it earlier?* Good thinking there. Shame about the earlier boob! *Mysteriously, no Egyptian scribe appears to notice any of this or the inevitable famine and mass starvation which would have ensued.* Exodus 10:4-15.
And for the penultimate trick, it's going to be dark for three days. *No one makes a record of this, obviously.* Exodus 10:21-23.
The last 'plague' is not so much a plague as a ritual genocide. *Here our tale takes a nasty turn and the true character of the Hebrew god is revealed in all its glory - a petty, vindictive, homicidal psychopath who has not yet acquired the omniscience he will be granted later. He kills every firstborn Egyptian in a single night,* ***including the firstborn of all the cattle that died in the fifth plague.*** *For some reason he needs the Hebrews to leave a secret sign so he doesn't kill them too.
And then, of course, Pharaoh could muster up 600 horses to pull the chariots ***from amongst all the dead livestock from the 5th plague*** (Exodus 14:7).

Speaking of Holy Apostles College
Listening to the Patrick Madrid show, Patrick suggested everyone take his apologetics course online for personal enrichment not for credit.
I logged on to the website to find that single course...His intro course is $600.
Logged off and never considered it again. Disappointed.
Holy Apostles College is good and affordable for someone enrolling full time in school to get a degree.
But someone looking for personal enrichment or the ability to better evangelize family members...... that personal enrichment cost isn't worth it. Sorry.
