"the farther you run, the more you feel undefined" is a line I think about a lot. any time I feel like running away from a problem I remember it and it really is the truth each and every time, wow I love this play.
I always loved this song, and now I can't hear any version of it without crying...my dad died in February 2021; we were never all that close and he was in bad health, so while it was sad, I never felt like I was grieving (felt kind of guilty about it, actually). Flash forward to November...Sondheim died, I cried myself to sleep for the first time I could remember, and spent the next three or four days randomly having to excuse myself at work to cry in the bathroom. Finally, last day, I got through almost all of it without having to stop, and I heard Tom Aldredge singing this in my head and completely lost it, and it took me a couple of minutes to realize that I wasn't just crying for Sondheim at that point. So, in addition to everything else, and while recognizing the irony given his relationships with his own parents, I guess I need to thank Sondheim for helping me mourn, too.
Having attended the original Broadway run right behind the pit orchestra ... I just KNEW the movie version would be ... less. Out of curiosity I did listen to ONE number and I went away giggling, never to attempt another watch of another version. THIS cast is perfection. Cannot outdo this. Nope.
Thank you for including the end of the previous scenes. It sets the context for people who haven't seen the musical. It's my favorite song in the show.
He did the same to Nine by cutting “Getting Tall”. Both songs are the thesis statements of the show, and he cut them. Neutered the material. He should be pilloried.

I get why they felt the need to cut this song from the movie...but it's probably the most important song in the musical. The biggest theme running through the musical is "Children Will Listen". This song is the Baker realizing that he's making the same mistakes his father did that resulted in the mess everyone's in. He's condemning his son to the same cycle he grew up in and the only way to ensure that doesn't happen is to break the cycle. It's also a chance for the Old Man to bring closure to the son he had long abandoned and import a lesson he never got to teach; running away (as tempting as it is) doesn't always solve your problems. If anything, it just passes them down to the next generation. Without this hard hitting lesson, the moral "Children Will Listen" doesn't have near as much impact as it should.
@@ros8986it is, it’s actually *happier* day too. chip zien just made a mistake at this performance, and also sings the word “happy” instead of happier lol
The connection between this song and Sondheim's own relationship with his father only hit me in full force when seeing it live - the magic of theatre.

god our theatre group did this two shows ago, i cry every time. every time.
The movie version omitting this song is a cinema sin
That whole movie is a cinema sin
I mean, putting it in the movie would have meant James Gordon sings it. I rather they omit it than let him ruin it.
@@schripppy agreed. Really don't need the movie at all and only watch the stage version.

I was ENRAGED when they cut this whole storyline out

I’m playing the mysterious man in my high school’s production this year. This video has helped tremendously!

@@earth3556 Hell yeah I just finished playing him, hope youre enjoying it

I will never forgive Disney for omitting this from the movie
I know right? I waited through the whole movie for it! I sat there fuming! It's the signature song . Dumb Disney.
I wish there WAS “no more.” I was I to know, how was I EVER to know”. I. Gonna cry now.
Lyrics
No more questions
Please
No more tests
Comes the day you say, "What for?"
Please-no more
[MYSTERIOUS MAN]
They disappoint
They disappear
They die but they don't...
Ashoka 'Paint' (Live Performance) | Genius Open Mic
[BAKER, spoken]
What?
[MYSTERIOUS MAN]
They disappoint
In turn, I fear
Forgive, though, they won't...
[BAKER]
No more riddles
No more jests
No more curses you can't undo
Left by fathers you never knew
No more quests
No more feelings
Time to shut the door
Just-no more
[MYSTERIOUS MAN]
Running away-let's do it
Free from the ties that bind
No more despair
Or burdens to bear
Out there in the yonder
Running away-go to it
Where did you have in mind?
Have to take care
Unless there's a "where"
You'll only be wandering blind
Just more questions
Different kind
Where are we to go?
Where are we ever to go?
Running away-we'll do it
Why sit around, resigned?
Trouble is, son
The farther you run
The more you'll feel undefined
For what you have left undone
And, more, what you've left behind
We disappoint
We leave a mess
We die but we don't...
[BAKER]
We disappoint
In turn, I guess
Forget, though, we won't...
[BAKER & MYSTERIOUS MAN]
Like father, like son
[The MYSTERIOUS MAN disappears.]
[BAKER]
No more giants
Waging war
Can't we just pursue our lives
With our children and our wives?
Till that happy day arrives
How do you ignore
All the witches
All the curses
All the wolves, all the lies
The false hopes, the goodbyes
The reverses
All the wondering what even worse is
Still in store?
All the children...
All the giants…
No more

Bless you for posting this
This is basically the anthem of the “I am done with today” mentality.
"No more giants...waging war." Looking at you, Russia.
