- My finch flights,I mostly breed Australian and African grass finches,
I keep Gouldian,Hecks,Timor,Star,Cherry,Masked,Spice,Bechino,Cut throat,Strawberry,St Helena,Gold breast waxbills together in the mixed flights.
love your aviaries..planted well and so natural,birds all happy,sounds lovely,well done...must be such a pleasure for you.Have given me much inspiration and thought for my new forthcoming aviary for my birds.

Plants are Bamboo,Red Robin ,ivy, Small fir's, Bay tree ,privit bushes and Russian vine.! The birds eat the Russian vine and it doesn't harm them in any way.. kinda keeps it under control a bit..lol

Thanks a lot. Another quick question. Do you keep your birds in a heated bird room or just inside during the winter or are they kept outside all year?

No mate, Silverbills should be treated like waxbills, their very timid Javas will fvck it all up...lol

I've got an 18ft double aviary being made I thought I keep budgies in one side and finches in the other was wondering if javas would go with zebra finches
Sounds like a nice setup but I wouldn't keep Javas in with zebras.
people do house Javas with Budgies.

both bird rooms are insulated and ply lined I've bought theses tubular heaters
Make sure your heaters are on a plug in thermostat Paul.Your also going to need a red light for night time on a timer ,I use a plug in timer from B&Q, and a radio. both will help against night fright. ie fireworks and cats on the roof at night.
But sounds like you've got it coverd.
I would still go for the mixed collection though. .lol

Zebras will be too dominate. they won't settle.

Hi Paul.
You can in an aviary but not in a cage. Although Zebra finches are almost bullet proof ( Hard as nails ) the Java will be the dominate specie .They are much stronger and can do serious damage to a zebra with its massive powerful bill.
Also don't house the much smaller Timor Zebra finch from the Lesser Sunda Islands as they are far too timid, they are somewhat rare in the Hobby but I've seen them in pet shops.
When breeding java sparrows ,remove all juveniles as soon as possible, They will become little buggers making all types of troubles for you,nest raiding and so on.

I would suggest 4 pairs of Zebra finches or one pair of Javas sparrows.
Rember Zebras and Javas breed like mice once they have settled into their new home, So 4 pairs of zebras could produce around 40/50 young in a good year.
Javas are best kept in pairs ,I've had 9 young in one nest a few years ago but 5 or 6 is the norm.
If your birdroom ie shed is heated during the winter then I would keep a mixed collection .
1 pair of Star finches
1 pair of Bicheno finches
1 pair of Gouldian finches
1 pair of Cherry finches
All are easy to keep ,they all eat the same seed and,the colours are fantastic.
But don't get them until early spring.

Also Paul build the biggest set up you can, because it will never be big enough. This hobby has a habit of getting out of control with some keepers. Ive seen packed aviarys that are filthy and run down.Then I'm asked by the owner why do my birds die and why won't they breed..
Also my videos have mostly been filmed during mid summer so they are packed with youngsters .So don't take them as a guild ,after the September club sale day my aviarys are somewhat empty.
You can't keep all your youngsters or every colour variety or mutation.
