The “pop” sounding break after the full guitar solo was perfectly placed IMO. The track practically had 3 guitar solos packed in 4 minutes. Having that break before the 3rd and final solo was phenomenal song writing and composing. Easily the pinnacle and culmination of their work
I was in the Oz music industry for over a decade during the 80's and early 90's, got jaded with all the bull sh*t, gave the game away and became an every increasingly fatter Govt bureaucrat, then a couple of years ago I tumbled onto BM and the delightful and smiley Akane which twigged me again that playing drums is fun, so the kits are set up again, I'm thrashing away like a bar room drunk in a fight, decided to retire early, have lost a lot of excess weight along with the stress and I'm aiming to drop a big bundle of my meagre retirement savings on seeing BM several times in 2024 which will get me travelling again (now I can fit back into an airplane seat 😂). BM"s dedication to following their dreams helped to inspire me to make some major changes and each day when I pick up the sticks I pay homage to the magnificent joyful Akane Hirose and her amazing Rock and Roll Sisters. Might be a bit of an overshare but what the fck, it's true, Viva the Maids Po 👍🎼🥁🎤🎸🍻
They're a really inspiring band. They work ridiculously hard and they're constantly pushing each other to get better. They play like a super group, but they came up together, making great music the whole way. If you look at the MV for Thrill, it hurts my back to watch Akane drum, but she retrained herself on her basics and if you watch her now, it's unreal how relaxed she looks while producing that gorilla power sound.
That's awesome, Bruno. I've never seen or heard a band that has been this good, not the same old same old and has inspired so many people. They are a miracle. Keep up the good work! I just retired too (not early 😢) and am now taking guitar lessons. Slow going for this old trumpeter but the pigeon is my inspiration.
If I were asked right now, what's your favorite hard rock "composition" - I'd name this song immediately. The solo on to the end of the song is one big masterpiece of songwriting - and the first part's great too! Like a lot of their songs, even after the 100th listen you're amazed all over again - especially if you focus on an individual player. You'll say "holy crap, I didn't notice that she's going f'ing wild the whole song" - a lot. And your face will continue to hurt from grinning.
And in the end they throw it all into one pot, stir and serve. They do that a lot in their writing, most memorable for me is "Manners" music video where they go All-In at the end, MISA's staccato bass picking would make surf guitarist stand up and take notice.
It's no secret that Band-Maid have a pop side to them- Miku (Red rose) was in a Jpop Idol group before she formed Band-Maid, but the pop elements are beautifully blended with any rock genre they care to use- Classic Rock to metal.
Absolutely, it's no secret that Band Maid has a pop influence in their music, yet, they manage to avoid most of the typical pop structures used by most bands.
There is a clip floating around the net of their performance of Dice, into Hate, from the recent Lollapalooza 2023 gig. Anchored by drums and bass, and interchange between lead guitar and bass. More great stuff from the Maids.
If you liked AKANE in the Kanami solo in this you should see "Don't you tell me" Live at Zepp Tokyo the outstanding three way breakdown between MISA, Kanami and AKANE is a thing of beauty.
So happy to have you back reacting to Band Maid, Eric 🎉 I hear your comments as coming from both a musician and fan perspective. It’s cool. This is a top ten for most fans, for sure. It’s going to grow on you more as you give it time on your playlist! The bridge or interlude here in “Blooming” is definitely one of their most beautiful, in my opinion. And the Maids build some beautiful bridges. I’m an old blues rock guy who never played drums. But on bass, I always pay attention to what the drums are doing. Can I request you include more in depth breakdowns of what Akane does? My musical heart knows she’s awesome, but I don’t understand exactly why. I notice she likes triplets using the double kick to snare. I notice she does super fast fills when other drummers wouldn’t. So anything else that you hear would be awesome to know! A special request for you and your drum expertise? “Warning!” Official music video. Probably one of Akane’s best efforts and, I think, includes a machine gun fill that runs a full two measures? All the best, continued success with your channel! 🤘🏽
I may not be a good enough drummer to breakdown her genius! LOL I will do my best! I had "Warning" on my list, but bumped it to my "next up" slot for BM! Thanks for watching and commenting, my friend!
I would say the bridge is more ballad than outright pop, but I agree that the juxtaposition and then somehow manage to blend them together at the end with chaotic beauty is a masterpiece. I would say it is very safe to say that Band-Maid blends rock with metal with punk and with pop as well. They make catchy songs in every genre they try, so no worries about calling pop elements pop. 😊
This is one of my favorites to listen to, Akane just pounds away on the drums and stays in that pocket. They have so many songs that are great, I find myself going back and always think "yup still a banger!!" even after all this time
Thank you for your reaction(s) to BAND-MAID. As a lower tier musician, I am constantly inspired by their music. That said, I am sure you will receive a number of BAND-MAID video requests...I hope you enjoy them all. I will offer up one suggestion that I truly believe you will not be disappointed in hearing: LOLLAPALOOZA 2023 - BAND-MAID's live performance of DICE/HATE?. Again, thank you for acknowledging these 5 talented musicians and their ability to be a solid band.
It's funny.....rewatching your review and then getting behind my drum kit....you really don"t realize how fast this song is.....I agree with you thats it blistering fast !!!!
I call those "Deceptively fast" LOL It's like on a listen you're aware that is fast, but when you sit down you realize it is way faster than you thought :)
Glad you liked it. Blooming to me is very satisfying - ticks all boxes. Catchy, poppy chorus, not one, but two guitar solos and drum dancing with rest of the band. Live version sound less poppy imo and personally I prefer live ver. but most people love the studio version.
If you were to look up a perfect song in the dictionary it would read.....Band Maid BLOOMING !!!!!!!!! Being a drummer myself....I tend to focus on the instrumentals in this band.....BUT...Saki's vocals in this song....hell in all their songs.... is mind blowing. As good as everyone is in this band.....Band maid wouldn't be Band Maid without SAKI !!!!!!
Try their “ballads” WONDERLAND (live), where’s AKANE’s drumming is a bit Jazzy, and DAYDREAMING, which has another spectacularly crafted guitar solo from KANAMINCHO, as well as the their more Pop oriented and extremely catchy songs like ENDLESS STORY and SMILE.
Speaking of member's ability to be stars on their own - you should check out Miku's side project "Cluppo", her "Hippy-Poppo" alter ego - she was a fledgling J-Pop singer before forming Band Maid and this gives her a chance to explore that direction on her own terms - start with "Peace and Love" for something a little different than Band Maid th-cam.com/video/kR-FPvYgPjM/w-d-xo.html
