    FWIW, Eddie sprayed his black first, then taped it off and sprayed the white. This was the black and white Strat he used earlier on. A couple years later he taped it up again and sprayed the red, and this became the Frankenstein most people know.

      While that is true first white, eddie didn't like people coping his frankinstrat. The original was just black with white pained on it, you can find picture of that strat. Later he painted it red with schwinn paint i think. He based the lines on guitar off another guitarist guitar, even did the jumping leap that guitarist did.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a bit odd. Sometimes paint peels off if there are adhesion issues. Maybe try taking some of the "stickiness" off the tape by putting it on your shirt a couple times before sticking it to the paint. Vinyl tape tends to stick more aggressively.

    i've repainted my guitar about 6 times, though I've only now seen that i shouldn't paint the neck pocket, could be why the setup is so bad. though when i first took it apart it had paint there. Would you recommend sanding it down to bare wood in there?

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your neck still fits in there snuggly it shouldn't be a huge issue. The only real concern then is the alignment between the neck and the bridge. If you're getting fret buzz, one possible cause could be a paint buildup affecting the angle (or possibly height) of the neck. Sanding or scraping it down a bit at a time until the alignment is good might be a worthwhile option.

    Starting with a red guitar would be very difficult to mask

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would just reverse mask all the lines, and then fill in the gaps. That's kind of what I did to apply the white anyway.

    • @WawakGuitar
      @WawakGuitar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      yes, but instead of putting down a single piece of tape to make a stripe, you would now have to tape of weird shapes to leave the stripes. Yes it can be done. it just requires more effort and tape. EVH painted it black, then white, then red. So technically you should make a black guitar, mask it and paint white. Then after making a white guitar with black stripes. You mask it again and paint it red. You did a fine job, just saying that painting white then red is better.

    Hey Brad, thanks for the video's, I am doing a EVH Striped paint job now and your plan sure helps! I am starting with the Black, but will do the White next, then finish with the Red and Clear. All in Enamel Paint. One thing I noticed in your video's in this series is that you scuff the paint between colors, but not when applying a second coat of the same color? I forgot to scuff the Black before putting on the first coat of White. Oops! Or does it matter that much? I will scuff each layer a little until finish just to make sure. Again, thanks bro!

    • @BradAngove

      +b4096 I scuff any time I'm not able to recoat within a 10-15 minute window. If you recoat within the appropriate flash off time, the next coat will bond chemically. If you have to wait, for example to be able to apply tape, then you need to scuff so that the next layer can bind mechanically.

    FYI... the function of your "conductive paint" as shielding would work either as a topcoat or buried under other paint.. the idea is to block signal leakage.. so masking it means absolutely nothing unless you are planning to use it to actually pass a signal.. then you would want to contact it directly... in this case as shielding... any ground connected anywhere will do... the rest can be painted.. and if you're staying true to a Frankenstrat look... the cavities were painted... not shielded with copper or any other tape.. nor painted with conductive paint..

      It can. I would seal it first though.

    Hey brad when I finished with my paint, it's not a hard finish, but it's soft which could easily be dented by a finger nail, it wasn't what I was expecting and I could feel the layers of paint stacking on top of each other! Can you help me? Much appreciated. I am having a hard time

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take me through your steps and what paints you used, and I will see if I can figure out what went wrong.

    • @MoshiProductionbeapro
      @MoshiProductionbeapro 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for responding
      Here it is in order
      Scuff the finish by scotch pad,
      Apply the white + primer rustolium paint on 1 hour between each coat(3 coats)
      Wait over night
      Scuff the guitar
      Mask the guitar ready to spray black rustolium
      Sprayed 3 coats of rustolium 20min between each coats
      Waited over night
      Take the tape off
      Scuff the body to take off the gloss of the black paint
      Put on masking tape for the red coat
      Sprayed the red coat 20 min between each
      Waited overnight
      Take the tape off and scuff the red gloss
      Sprayed the gloss rustolium 3 times 20 min between
      And that's it I haven't done anything since and the paint is not harden, rather is soft and easily dent by finger nails small pressure
      And it still smell like paint

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like your clear hasn't cured properly. Did you have any problems with paint lifting when you removed your tape? Also, how long has it been since you finished painting it?

    • @MoshiProductionbeapro
      @MoshiProductionbeapro 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brad Angove it has been 2 days and there was no paint peeling off when taking tape off, but the body now is very easily scratched off by a pick going under it

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there other paint didn't peel than it seems relatively clear that it's just the clear that's the problem. It might have gone on a bit too heavy or something. You'll probably have to sand back through it in order to fix the issue.

    Great video, II know you have said you are not going for an exact replica, however, for anyone that IS going for an exact replica, please do your self a favor and do it like Eddie did. Does NOT make sense from a color palate, however he started with Black, masked and painted white, and then masked (along with some weird squiggle patterns) and painted 1 more time. There is also a mysterious pale blue color on the back, that was unintentional and was picked up from something Eddie laid the guitar on when it was wet. Also, there are some random bicycle reflectors (1 broken intentionally I believe) and I THINK a 1977 quarter that has no function that I can recall by the Floyd rose. The center cavity is a 5 position pickup selector that is NOT wired and the top pickup is also not wired. This is a great video and I wish I had not bought a guitar blank to start from scratch on....and had to primer from the ground up. Still in the process right now, but I love the video and stopped in for a little painting advice... :)

    This is great if your goal is a Van Halen inspired paint job. But by no mean should this be used as a reference to produce an accurate pattern and color layering...
    For extremely accurate reference, find Johnny B Guitars frankenstrat series... you will see the seriously in depth details that are literally required to be even close to accurate...
    Your guitar is pretty cool.

      No it doesn’t. White is a more opaque pigment than red. Only thing that covers better is black.

      It makes precisely no difference what difference you do it in, except from a convenience perspective.

      You are absolutely incorrect. The stripes interweave in a very specific pattern that can only be replicated by doing the paint in the sequence I noted above.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hahaha well, I made it pretty clear that I wasn’t trying to replicate the design exactly, so I guess the conversation is moot and the initial comment was pointless. Onward I guess.

      Brad Angove its not the frankenstrat paint job if it looks nothing like the actual paint job

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The entire point of the frankenstrat paint job was that it was an imprecise pattern. You’re welcome to try to emulate it perfectly if you want, but the same concept applies, the tutorial still shows how a frankenstrat paint job is done, and there are tons of different “frankenstrat paint jobs” in various colours. Even EVH had a few different ones. Don’t be ridiculous.

    This is what NOT to do when you are doing your Ed guitar.... You dont want to paint over the clear coat...The tone of this guitar is completely ruined now. Always start with bare wood....

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You’re laboring under a very old misconception. The tone of this guitar is no different than if it had no paint on it at all. Have a look at some of the modern testing on the subject before making assertions.

      I don’t know about paint’s effect on tone, but I want to play heavy metal songs with a black guitar, and want to play country with a blonde guitar.

      As a subscriber who has watched countless TH-cam videos on painting (I like doing guitars and football helmets) I can honestly say Brad is not an amateur, very professional in production, explanation and responding to questions. The only problem I see is all professionals get paid, he does it free for us...

  • @gagelink4963
    @gagelink4963 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its painful to watch all the small errors he makes while spraying this paint... For instance, touching the body with his sweaty fingers AFTER he degreased it, and watching him not painting off what's called the "wet edge", or the fact that he neither primed the body OR layed a tack coat... if you're a painter you know what I'm talking about...

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As you can see, the minor contact I made with the body after degreasing had no effect.
      The wet edge works a bit differently with spray cans. Watch closely, you may learn something from how I work with it in this video.
      There is no reason to primer a pre-sealed body in this case. Primer assists with adhesion on metal and often plastic. It’s not helpful over a prior paint job like this. There’s also no need for a tack coat on an acrylic paint. I use one on my urethanes.
      I imagine you’re in the automotive industry. I’ve done that as well. There are some differences. Thanks for your comment though.

    That's not the way you do it you start out with a black guitar you paint the guitar black first then you tape up what you want to keep black and then you paint the entire guitar White and then without removing any of that tape you tape off what you want to keep white and then paint the entire guitar red then you take off all the tape you're you're screwed up
