As a 1 type myself, let me take a crack at this. The 8s are next to the fear cluster because they direct the gut anger at what they fear. The 9s are in the middle because they direct the gut anger back in at itself. 1s are near the heart group because we direct the gut anger at feelings of inadequacy. The rules are important because you can't be inadequate unless you fail to meet some criteria (you also can't be adequate without criteria). To find peace, we try to make ourselves and others meet the expectations we dogmatically accept. 1s are commonly called Perfectionists and Reformers, but I think this is just saying some 1s focus the righteous fury at themselves (perfectionists) and some focus it outward (reformers). In reality, most 1s are probably a mix of both in various contexts. It's important to remember 1s stress into unhealthy 4s and grow into healthy 7s. When things aren't working, we revert to glorifying the tragedy of our failure, becoming martyrs of a righteous cause. When we are healthy, we face the darkness like 7s and learn to accept the imperfections that drive us crazy. That is the core arc of our growth, detaching value (self worth) from success and failure (both in ourselves and the world around us). Or to boil it down, type 1 growth is to release our death grip on whatever dogma is in our hearts, minds, and gut. And the hardest thing about it is that we need to do the most work when we feel the most anger, which is also when it is the hardest to think clearly; our body is trying to empty the brain to get ready to fight. We have to resist the impulse to bury everything that hurts in our gut and face the darkness of our pain consciously, so we don't just lash out at whatever we think deserves our hate.
I think the "onest one" is probably Inspector Javert. Completely dedicated to his cause, to the point of complete obsession, until the very last moment when his realization that his cause does not equal morality screws with him so severely that he throws himself into the Seine.
I think it's worth bringing up that the One dedication to rules often isn't so much a head-type evaluation of compliance as it is an intuitive, gut-type sense of what's right and wrong (and the immediate anger response). It's maladaptive in that it often arises as a way to justify ourselves and reconcile the ideals we hold with the broken reality we see, a false road to silencing that gut anger inside. As a One, it seems like the key to growth is understanding that although the rules themselves may be right, the rules are a means and not the ends in and of themselves.
As a self-“diagnosed” 1, I’ve identified what I think are the driving forces behind my perfectionism. From my internal analysis, yes rules are often rationalizations for gut judgements, but there’s often still a desire to find the perfect rules for “fixing” the world. The world being “broken” is the source of the anger. The need for perfection in the self is driven by the need to avoid hypocrisy. “I want to be the dictator of the world because I can make it perfect. If I’m not perfect then I don’t deserve to be dictator of the world and my entire identity of being ‘a good person’(TM) crumbles.” The adaptiveness of the 1 to anger, is that anger comes from injustice; the 8 takes things straightforwardly into their own hands, the 9 tells themself it will all work out or they deserve it, and the 1 uses rules to punish and police everyone

Thanks for making this series. Whilst I'm uncertain about applying the enneagram to real people, it has helped me frame my own pathology and I have been using it recently to define my own characters. As is commonly said, "All models are wrong, some are useful."
Thank you for this. I’ve recently learned about the enneagram, (been working on a comic book for a while) and one of my characters is a one. The “selective anger” thing and “justice comes from the gut” thing make SO much sense. At first glance, my guy didn’t seem like a gut type; honestly, I could’ve seen him as a head OR heart. (But maybe this is just me being a noob at this system lol) However, this explanation put my thoughts into words better than I ever could. Love the videos! I just realized I’d been watching your channel, while simultaneously not being subscribed. I’ve fixed that issue lol
I would like to commend you on a job well done with this series. I have hope that this may help dispel some of the errors/contradictions I have seen in many of the spaces I have found within the enneagram communities. Truly outstanding good work. I want to say I'm proud of your work because how right you have gotten a lot of the material. A complete series I hope will be prosperous to your channel. Maybe one day, if you ever revisit the topic, you should go in depth on the more nitty gritty parts of it such as instincts and wings to really encapsulate how those factors will affect storytelling elements. I will (continue to) watch your channel with great interest.
While it makes for good stories (and it is also fiction so people can write whatever they want) this trope of "cop needa to break the system/laws to make real justice with his own hands" is the exact opposite of a thing a cop should do and only leads to corruption and injustice happening. (Sorry for the tangent, great video btw, loving this enagram series)
I like to look at all the types as ways of coping with inbalances with that mind. One is a rejection of instinct (while 8 is identifying with instinct and 9 is losing sight of the instinct). "My instinct is bad, therefore I need rules to not be bad". Of course this means the wrath is turned back on itself and gets focused to a laser-point on any wrong-ness which could escape the One, or "ne'er-do-wells" who don't take things seriously. It doesn't "leak-out", it is a jet stream. A one's wrath often feels very cold and solid, unlike an eight's occasional explosion. There is no off-switch for a one, because the code is what makes life worth living.
1s are also the guiltiest type. I think it's best to think of them as people who want to hold on to their rigid values out of a fear of guilt/shame rather than just righteous anger, which is usually more outside focused. Growth means learning not feel guilty about the small things or adjusting the compass from something that they used to think was bad, but they still need to feel is alright.
I've loved the series, and I've looked forward to every upload. It's been a wonderful refresher to the enneagram. You've done an amazing job of summerizing the core motivation of each type. As a one, sorry you've struggled to "get ones" I think everyone has a type that they just don't "get" who motivations seem foreign and bazaar, I personally feel that way about sixes. (no offence sixes, it's just that your core need would personally make me feel treaded on) I'll just add that as a one, I think that our growth is about transcending the binary of good vs bad, right vs wrong. An immature one follows the rules because its a shallow and easy way to feel like we're are "good", "right" or "correct" rather then "bad", "wrong" or "corrupt" Growth for us is learning to break the rules yes, (which just makes us feel like shit) but the deeper grown is learning to question the rules, to decide our own code, to go beyond what we've been thought and to decide for ourselves what our values are beyond the "rules" we were born into. To see and find the grey rather then the black and white.
You're half right. For a 1, deciding on your own values just sounds like 'under new management.' Indeed, it sounds like the heart of the problem: regarding whatever makes *me*, personally, feel angry (whether because of personality, trained instinct or the misfortune it causes me) as the standard. It's frequently not a question of *whether* something is bad or not but a matter of *proportion* and *perspective*. Regarding it as a question of 'is thing bad or not?' won't help, because when a 1's in a spat, 'THING BAD' is all we can think about. The question is 'is this as bad as I feel it to be?' Or 'this is a bad event, as in it's inconvenient for me, but am I treating an accident as though they had ill intentions?' etc.
one of my favourite 1s in all of fiction is a character I created. Essentially, there was this famous scientist who wanted to live forever and keep innovating but couldn't find a way to make herself immortal. She COULD find a way to clone herself and have immortality hard-coded into the clone's dna, so she settled for that. She burned through multiple clones early on simply because the clone needed to be perfect replacement, nobody should know about the whole cloning thing, it needs to be a perfect slight-of-hand. obviously, the clones couldnt be killed, so they were locked away in a dark pit with no escape. The clone she settled for wasn't even a 1:1 match, its just that the scientist was colourblind and didnt notice the colours were wrong. The clone saw what had happened if she would correct the scientist and there's no way she is going to do that. This clone is the 1-iest 1 to ever 1. The scientist was satisfied with the clone's physical appearance, but they needed to match them mentally, personality-wise. They were put through intense training, told that they had to be perfect or it was the pit for them, and so the clone obeyed, following the rules and copying the scientist's every move because deviation meant punishment and obedience meant safety. This, I think, encapsulates 1s as a gut type in a way many writers fail to do, she isn't following the rules out of a sense of justice or morality, she's following the rules because that was the only way she could survive. Theres a lot more meat to her character than just this, but thats really all there is to her part of the enneagram.
I think if we're going by the theory of adapting fixations to get needs met: 1ness can come about from hypercritical/strict households where children are led to believe they need to be "good" to receive resources and/or avoid harsh punishment. This then leads to a compulsive need for everything to be perfect. They turn this critical eye to themselves and their environment as a way of predicting and correcting things that may set-off a caregiver and, consequently, bring them harm. AKA: If love and care is seen as conditional, a child could develop a 1 fixation as a way to force themselves to meet these conditions. No dinner unless your room is clean? A 1 child will take action and make sure they have an absolutely spotless room, growing extremely angry at any mess because it could mean going hungry. Obviously this isn't the only way these things can happen, but I thought I'd share one of my theories.
Ned Stark is super interesting because he has already broken his code, with Jon, it's just that no one knows. It kinda shows he cares more about family - specifically children and keeping them from harm - than about honor, which is also what makes him inform Cersei about his plan, what causes his original rift with Robert *and* him to leave the small council in season 1.

I think 1s survival strategy is taking responsibility for oneself and the surrounding way too early, becoming the trustworthy and responsible one, which takes it's toll and make them resentful.

I can't think of any media examples of this, but I think 1's can exist in perfection. They need wrongness to stamp out. Their anger is a fuel source, something they selectively utilize to try and achieve perfection, so if they ever get there, if they actually do become perfect, or achieve the perfect environment, they either have no anger left to drive them, or a bunch of leftover anger with no proper place to go. Something to the tune of the 3's false victory, where they get everything they ever wanted, and it still isn't enough. There are some types like 2's, who can exist in a perfect state or environment peacefully. But 1s, 3s, and 5s all have a common behavior, which I believe stems from their existence in the competency triad. They always need to be doing something. For 3's it's achieving, for 5's it's intellectualizing, but for 1's it's fixing. And if there is nothing to fix, what are they supposed to do?
1 here, and I was waiting for the perfect description. You got there in the drawing sections, but the video felt like it was getting off-track in the middle. Our culture overemphasises the type of flaw you're talking about, so it's an easy to rattle off those traits, but 1 standards aren't necessarily *moral* standards, and a 1 doesn't necessarily hold them with the same conviction in a cool hour. *While* I'm angry, I choose to regard whatever irritates me as being commensurate in wrongness - again, not necessarily evil - to the anger it makes me feel: we try to make our passion an objective standard. The ultimate 1 interaction is the ending of the book of Jonah. 1ness can be both outward and inward facing. Hence, perfectionism. I think that's why 3-ness sounded so similar to me. The worst thing is when the perfectionistic aspect turns on itself and I start seething at myself for seething over something that doesn't deserve it. All 1s result in inflexible standards, but inflexible and judgmental standards aren't exclusively caused by 1-ness. They can be a 5 or a 6 thing, or a way of making yourself feel superior, etc.
There were so many times during this video that I started to wonder if I could be a one, because I really do have that kind of no compromise on my morals thing going on, and if I'm not careful, it bleeds out into an all-encompassing NEED to impose and enforce RULES. This made me anxious, because it seemed to imply that getting my hands dirty is necessary, and that's something I don't accept. However, the stuff about anger just really doesn't resonate with me, personally. Like, yes I do have a deep and abiding sense of outrage over any perceived injustices, but I am most certainly not picking/choosing where to apply my anger; some things just simply don't offend me, and except when confronted with something that seems unjust, I don't usually have much choice in regards to how I respond. If I AM a one, I would say that it's more like the Batman monologue from the end of the Dark Knight Returns, where he tells Clark that he has learned that "the world only makes sense if you force it to." Though I disagree with this conclusion on philosophical grounds, I cannot deny that I often FEEL as if it is true.
I'm definitely a 1, and... yeah. Sometimes when someone is stupid in a specific way, no matter how severe, I gotta just go over here and square breathe for a minute.
Something I believe I spotted in myself is that my 1ness came from what I believe was a lack of justice. (Core memory: I was too good at handball at school so the kids just kicked me out). I feel like this gave me the whole “that’s not fair, that’s against the standard, it should be this way, everyone do it correctly” idk, just popped into my head when I heard it. What do you think?
I don't really know how your enneagram thing works, but Javert comes to mind as someone who sticks to his principle of enforcing the law to a fault. And when he realises the law is not infallible and that the man he has pursued for years not only is capable of change, but *has* changed, Javert has an identity crises and - himself not being capable of change, or rather that he is incapable of coming to terms with the idea that he may have been wrong this whole time- kills himself.
Ones are my favourite to write because to me, they're the "high masking autistic girl" type (yeah, people say 5s are Autistic, but ask an autistic woman which characters she relates to in media). Katara, Elphaba, Hermione, Caitlyn, Amity Blight, Persona 5's Makoto, Sandra Bullock in "The Heat"... you get these girls who just don't instinctively fit into the complexities of neurotypical female social structures (they will likely be friends with mostly boys and maybe other ND girls if they have friends at all), but they are *really good* at following the comparatively simple rules of school (simple at least if you don't care if peers don't think you're cool, but nobody thinks these girls are cool anyway so let's go!) to get praise from grownups, so they end up top of the class, the teacher's pet, head girl, held up as a shining example, told they can achieve whatever they want because they followed all the rules perfectly, what a good girl! You shall be President some day!.... Only to discover the world isn't fair and will not give them what they need even if they do all the things everyone says they want, and it BREAKS THEM. It creates this outpouring of rage about the betrayal, the wrongness and unfairness of a world where people break rules and succeed (these types tend to keep their composure on the outside a lot because it's "proper" or they're just not adept with expression, but inside they're melodramatic AF) . These girls feel betrayed, and they're sure as hell not going to turn it inward because obviously *they're perfect! All the grown ups said so!* and so they start breaking rules that they have identified as "unfair", because the world/system must be wrong, and if they fix it, people will *surely* love them! They often end up fighting the person who told them the rules and then didn't give the promised rewards for following them, because to me the core of a 1 is they feel they they've been betrayed. It's the moment you discover, as a little girl, that you've been diligently helping with chores because "that's what good girls do", and then discover your male peers are getting paid for it, and then being told, "well, they *probably* asked! You should have been assertive and done the same!" RAGE. At some point, this prissy girl will snap, punch someone right in the face, and the audience will cheer and boom, that's why this type is so fun.
Interesting. Would you say authors tend to write one Enneagram type as their protagonists as a general rule? And do they base it on their type? Maybe some types naturally branch out and others stick with what they know. Is there an author who has written and rocked every type? Which authors are clearly in a rut with the type they write? Please flood us with examples in a future video. I don't know much about Enneagram. MBTI is my jam. I am INTJ and I suspect Enneagram type 1.
So I rewatched Hot Fuzz recently and just remember sergeant Nicholas Angel spell out: "I had to prove to myself that the Law could be proper and righteous and for the good of humankind." …then of course when he seems to get an arc to break his rigid mindset he actually doesn't, because this is the three flavours cornetto trilogy.

I think about very similarly in terms of how eight and one are arranged on the wheel. I like the way you described the line to seven.

I'll just add that as a one, I think that our growth is about transcending the binary of good vs bad, right vs wrong. An immature one follows the rules because its a shallow and easy way to feel like we're are "good", "right" or "correct" rather then "bad", "wrong" or "corrupt"
Growth for us is learning to break the rules yes, (which just makes us feel like shit) but the deeper grown is learning to question the rules, to decide our own code, to go beyond what we've been thought and to decide for ourselves what our values are beyond the "rules" we were born into. To see and find the grey rather then the black and white.
You're half right. For a 1, deciding on your own values just sounds like 'under new management.' Indeed, it sounds like the heart of the problem: regarding whatever makes *me*, personally, feel angry (whether because of personality, trained instinct or the misfortune it causes me) as the standard.
It's frequently not a question of *whether* something is bad or not but a matter of *proportion* and *perspective*. Regarding it as a question of 'is thing bad or not?' won't help, because when a 1's in a spat, 'THING BAD' is all we can think about. The question is 'is this as bad as I feel it to be?' Or 'this is a bad event, as in it's inconvenient for me, but am I treating an accident as though they had ill intentions?' etc.
one of my favourite 1s in all of fiction is a character I created.
Essentially, there was this famous scientist who wanted to live forever and keep innovating but couldn't find a way to make herself immortal. She COULD find a way to clone herself and have immortality hard-coded into the clone's dna, so she settled for that.
She burned through multiple clones early on simply because the clone needed to be perfect replacement, nobody should know about the whole cloning thing, it needs to be a perfect slight-of-hand. obviously, the clones couldnt be killed, so they were locked away in a dark pit with no escape. The clone she settled for wasn't even a 1:1 match, its just that the scientist was colourblind and didnt notice the colours were wrong. The clone saw what had happened if she would correct the scientist and there's no way she is going to do that.
This clone is the 1-iest 1 to ever 1.
The scientist was satisfied with the clone's physical appearance, but they needed to match them mentally, personality-wise. They were put through intense training, told that they had to be perfect or it was the pit for them, and so the clone obeyed, following the rules and copying the scientist's every move because deviation meant punishment and obedience meant safety. This, I think, encapsulates 1s as a gut type in a way many writers fail to do, she isn't following the rules out of a sense of justice or morality, she's following the rules because that was the only way she could survive.
Theres a lot more meat to her character than just this, but thats really all there is to her part of the enneagram.
Following the rules to survive sounds much more 6 to me. That type of upbringing also sounds like it would instill a lot of 6 in you.

I think if we're going by the theory of adapting fixations to get needs met:
1ness can come about from hypercritical/strict households where children are led to believe they need to be "good" to receive resources and/or avoid harsh punishment. This then leads to a compulsive need for everything to be perfect. They turn this critical eye to themselves and their environment as a way of predicting and correcting things that may set-off a caregiver and, consequently, bring them harm.
AKA: If love and care is seen as conditional, a child could develop a 1 fixation as a way to force themselves to meet these conditions.
No dinner unless your room is clean? A 1 child will take action and make sure they have an absolutely spotless room, growing extremely angry at any mess because it could mean going hungry.
Obviously this isn't the only way these things can happen, but I thought I'd share one of my theories.

Ned Stark is super interesting because he has already broken his code, with Jon, it's just that no one knows.
It kinda shows he cares more about family - specifically children and keeping them from harm - than about honor, which is also what makes him inform Cersei about his plan, what causes his original rift with Robert *and* him to leave the small council in season 1.
His first name is just Robb and not Robert.

I think 1s survival strategy is taking responsibility for oneself and the surrounding way too early, becoming the trustworthy and responsible one, which takes it's toll and make them resentful.

I can't think of any media examples of this, but I think 1's can exist in perfection. They need wrongness to stamp out. Their anger is a fuel source, something they selectively utilize to try and achieve perfection, so if they ever get there, if they actually do become perfect, or achieve the perfect environment, they either have no anger left to drive them, or a bunch of leftover anger with no proper place to go. Something to the tune of the 3's false victory, where they get everything they ever wanted, and it still isn't enough. There are some types like 2's, who can exist in a perfect state or environment peacefully. But 1s, 3s, and 5s all have a common behavior, which I believe stems from their existence in the competency triad. They always need to be doing something. For 3's it's achieving, for 5's it's intellectualizing, but for 1's it's fixing. And if there is nothing to fix, what are they supposed to do?

1 here, and I was waiting for the perfect description. You got there in the drawing sections, but the video felt like it was getting off-track in the middle. Our culture overemphasises the type of flaw you're talking about, so it's an easy to rattle off those traits, but 1 standards aren't necessarily *moral* standards, and a 1 doesn't necessarily hold them with the same conviction in a cool hour. *While* I'm angry, I choose to regard whatever irritates me as being commensurate in wrongness - again, not necessarily evil - to the anger it makes me feel: we try to make our passion an objective standard. The ultimate 1 interaction is the ending of the book of Jonah.
1ness can be both outward and inward facing. Hence, perfectionism. I think that's why 3-ness sounded so similar to me. The worst thing is when the perfectionistic aspect turns on itself and I start seething at myself for seething over something that doesn't deserve it.
All 1s result in inflexible standards, but inflexible and judgmental standards aren't exclusively caused by 1-ness. They can be a 5 or a 6 thing, or a way of making yourself feel superior, etc.
There were so many times during this video that I started to wonder if I could be a one, because I really do have that kind of no compromise on my morals thing going on, and if I'm not careful, it bleeds out into an all-encompassing NEED to impose and enforce RULES. This made me anxious, because it seemed to imply that getting my hands dirty is necessary, and that's something I don't accept. However, the stuff about anger just really doesn't resonate with me, personally. Like, yes I do have a deep and abiding sense of outrage over any perceived injustices, but I am most certainly not picking/choosing where to apply my anger; some things just simply don't offend me, and except when confronted with something that seems unjust, I don't usually have much choice in regards to how I respond.
If I AM a one, I would say that it's more like the Batman monologue from the end of the Dark Knight Returns, where he tells Clark that he has learned that "the world only makes sense if you force it to." Though I disagree with this conclusion on philosophical grounds, I cannot deny that I often FEEL as if it is true.

Something I believe I spotted in myself is that my 1ness came from what I believe was a lack of justice. (Core memory: I was too good at handball at school so the kids just kicked me out). I feel like this gave me the whole “that’s not fair, that’s against the standard, it should be this way, everyone do it correctly” idk, just popped into my head when I heard it. What do you think?

I don't really know how your enneagram thing works, but Javert comes to mind as someone who sticks to his principle of enforcing the law to a fault. And when he realises the law is not infallible and that the man he has pursued for years not only is capable of change, but *has* changed, Javert has an identity crises and - himself not being capable of change, or rather that he is incapable of coming to terms with the idea that he may have been wrong this whole time- kills himself.

Ones are my favourite to write because to me, they're the "high masking autistic girl" type (yeah, people say 5s are Autistic, but ask an autistic woman which characters she relates to in media). Katara, Elphaba, Hermione, Caitlyn, Amity Blight, Persona 5's Makoto, Sandra Bullock in "The Heat"... you get these girls who just don't instinctively fit into the complexities of neurotypical female social structures (they will likely be friends with mostly boys and maybe other ND girls if they have friends at all), but they are *really good* at following the comparatively simple rules of school (simple at least if you don't care if peers don't think you're cool, but nobody thinks these girls are cool anyway so let's go!) to get praise from grownups, so they end up top of the class, the teacher's pet, head girl, held up as a shining example, told they can achieve whatever they want because they followed all the rules perfectly, what a good girl! You shall be President some day!....
Only to discover the world isn't fair and will not give them what they need even if they do all the things everyone says they want, and it BREAKS THEM. It creates this outpouring of rage about the betrayal, the wrongness and unfairness of a world where people break rules and succeed (these types tend to keep their composure on the outside a lot because it's "proper" or they're just not adept with expression, but inside they're melodramatic AF) .
These girls feel betrayed, and they're sure as hell not going to turn it inward because obviously *they're perfect! All the grown ups said so!* and so they start breaking rules that they have identified as "unfair", because the world/system must be wrong, and if they fix it, people will *surely* love them! They often end up fighting the person who told them the rules and then didn't give the promised rewards for following them, because to me the core of a 1 is they feel they they've been betrayed. It's the moment you discover, as a little girl, that you've been diligently helping with chores because "that's what good girls do", and then discover your male peers are getting paid for it, and then being told, "well, they *probably* asked! You should have been assertive and done the same!" RAGE.
At some point, this prissy girl will snap, punch someone right in the face, and the audience will cheer and boom, that's why this type is so fun.

Interesting. Would you say authors tend to write one Enneagram type as their protagonists as a general rule? And do they base it on their type? Maybe some types naturally branch out and others stick with what they know. Is there an author who has written and rocked every type? Which authors are clearly in a rut with the type they write? Please flood us with examples in a future video. I don't know much about Enneagram. MBTI is my jam. I am INTJ and I suspect Enneagram type 1.
So I rewatched Hot Fuzz recently and just remember sergeant Nicholas Angel spell out:
"I had to prove to myself that the Law could be proper and righteous and for the good of humankind."
…then of course when he seems to get an arc to break his rigid mindset he actually doesn't, because this is the three flavours cornetto trilogy.
