  • As I walked north by the edge of the waves on the beach and just when I started to think it was going to be a quite day with very few birds to photograph, I almost jumped when I felt a bird behind me flying just a few feet to my left skimming the shallow waters; it was a beautiful black skimmer that soon after turn around and headed south again not too far from me. It turned out there was a fairly large flock (about 50) of them around investigating and evaluating a protected area with decoys as a potential breading place. Needless to say, I took a few pictures and my morning was made; not bad for dark black and bright white all in one bird without a cloud in the sky. Hope you enjoy them.

Nice captures. Glad to see that the recent shoreline work around Tigertail Beach hasn't scared them all away for long.

Thank you for watching. The latest hurricanes and the work that followed were devastating to this area, this is the first time I saw skimmers since then so hopefully things are returning to a more natural state.
