thanks, this was very useful! regarding keeping the aperture fixed throughout the shoot, I expect there can be exceptions for close-ups where you may want a shallower DOF, vs wide or establishing shots where you want everything in focus what’s your take on this?
Question. But first,…thank you sir. Very helpful. Noob question: Are those spot meter exposure readings in Vlog….are those with the log assist feature turned on? Many thanks.
Good video - although I might argue that you may need to stop down if you're doing a wide establishing shot if you wanted more stuff in focus for that shot.
I was maybe going to mention this as it’s a good point but I get what Charlie is saying. If it’s a creative decision then great, but don’t do it just to control exposure without thinking about how it affects the shot composition
Awesome stuff! If shooting VLOG on S5ii the image is grey.. do you just view that grey image and use the exposure square... or do you use an internal LUT or external monitor with LUT etc, cheers chief :)
Best take away [for me] is how you stick with a number of settings add or subtract light from there. May seem like a no-brainer to some, but one of these a-ha things for me.
Cameras models/specs don't create a beautiful image. It's the lighting of a scene. This is a proper tutorial. Listen up regardless of what camera you use.
This is according to Photo Joseph who is a Panasonic Ambassador so you would think that his info is solid. I haven't actually read the technical papers myself. But my own tests seem to line up 🙌
Yeah I’m learning how to expose properly for the first time and “expose for what you can’t control, don’t clip highlights, and use non-diegetic lighting to expose everything else” has always made sense to me as a rule of thumb
Well Vlog can’t expose 6.3 stop over. Gerald Undone confirmed what I figured out on my own. You have to set zebras on Vlog at 75% because the highlights clips really easily. I can set my Pocket 4k and 95-100% zebras then used highlight recovery in Resolve to bring a stop of clipped highlights back. I think more latitude maybe available use ProRes Raw or BRAW 12 bit from your LUMIX camera but those 150 megabit per second files aren’t getting 14 stops of dynamic range.
Im going off figures Photo Joseph quoted, he's a Panasonic ambassador. Maybe he's wrong. I'm more interested in the results. Has anyone ever seen Gerald Undones work?? I haven't.
Dude your approach is admirable. However suggesting that you'd keep your camera settings locked and finesse your lighting (as you draw squiggles on a static subject onscreen) is misleading. Particularly if the lighting in a scene is not controllable. Contrary to what you say, the big (DP) fish try to light to a preferred stop however if the moment calls for it, they adapt and modify their approach. Period.
This is the best situation down for Lumix and cameras I have ever seen. Appreciate your advice.
The absolute best explanation on how to set and work the exposure! Thank you for the clarity! FINALLY I get it!
Amen!
Man, I love how casual and useful your videos are! Thanks for sharing with us!
Really appreciate it!
Great mindset to walk into the space with. with so many other logistics to manage, this is such a simple equation. thank you and cheers!
Appreciated!
Another great breakdown. Can't wait to see the behind scenes I learn a lot from your videos.
Appreciate it 👍
Amazing - One of the best videos I have seen on VLOG lighting and exposing - it's really helpful. Thank you so much for kindly sharing this.
Yeah!!! 1,000th subscriber right here… way to go man…. Good stuff…😁
Thanks 🙏 means a lot 😁
Great commentary. Looking forward to more.
Thanks for sharing Carter.
I like your style! Classy stuff.
thanks, this was very useful!

what’s your take on this?
useful s5mII footage.(v log)
Thanks for sharing! Very helpful!!!
This was what i needed, Thanks
Explained perfectly 👍
That is a very useful video. Thanks
brilliant explanation!
Great information! Thanks for sharing.
Great explanation, thanks for it!
Amazing. Thanks!!
Great explanation.
Super helpful 👍🏼
Great video and info, and I don’t even own a Panasonic anymore! New sub.
great video man.
Good stuff there
Awesome stuff
Do you grade entirely manually or use phantom luts?
Totally manual
Realy helpfull, thanx!
Thank you, sir!
Helllo wich computer do you use for vlog 4K. It runs smooth?
My pc is pretty old, I just use proxies.
Loved the explanation about how to expose properly .. but is it true that we need to overexpose 1 or 2 stops for vlog?
Question. But first,…thank you sir. Very helpful. Noob question: Are those spot meter exposure readings in Vlog….are those with the log assist feature turned on? Many thanks.
Yes, meter only measures stops in log. Yes, 709 monitoring is on. 👍
Great!
Thanks bro, fantastic video.
Thanks!
Good video - although I might argue that you may need to stop down if you're doing a wide establishing shot if you wanted more stuff in focus for that shot.
Possibly yes, the point I'm making is that you don't change your aperture all the time to suit the lighting conditions.
I was maybe going to mention this as it’s a good point but I get what Charlie is saying. If it’s a creative decision then great, but don’t do it just to control exposure without thinking about how it affects the shot composition
@@fullcirclegla Not only that, the character of a lens will be very different wide open to stopped down.
@@CarterCreativeContent absolutely! 👍🏻

Awesome video man.. I am at edge to buy s5m2. Please help me understand the camera better. 🙏
Is a variable ND filter a necessity for shooting in vlog? Thinking about buying one
Oo it’s imka!!!
Thanks for this. Do you have a preferred vnd (brand)?
Tiffen are solid

Yeah people tend to overcomplicate settings, this isn't still photography 🤷🏻♂️

Amen to that 🙌
6 stops seems like a BIG number. I thought it was around 3.
Anyways, i learnt alot from this video. Thank you
I dig the waffle waffle waffle !! did I spell that right? LOL
You can recover +6 Stops o.o wow that is huge, i never expose more than +3 over ^^ maybe have to try this what a great video thank you

@@CarterCreativeContent will do also some tests :)
Nice breakdown.....Someone can explain in detail about native iso on S5, I think am lost 😂
In V Log native iso are 640 and 4000
I cannot believe that this has only so few views. Everyone just want to do ETTR I guess. Lol.

Many say you supposed to overexpose by 1 or 2 stops in V-Log in order to avoid noise in the shadows, is that so?
I've never used that approach and had no issues with noise.
@@CarterCreativeContent Thanks!
What lens!

Why don't you use the zebra tool? For example 80%.

Off course you have to be flexible. However, this method is used professionally and I use it all the time so stand by it.
