Just joined you this morning. I’ve been stitching and quilting for over 40 years and sewing for over 60 years. Your question about what to do is first get a cross stitch key that has holes in it to lace at the edge of your fabric and put your needle up at either 1 1/2” or 2” or 2 1/2” that way the choice is yours and you won’t start to close to the edge. Second you can use from old floss 4 strands and do a back stitch all the way around your cloth. Even better if you can fold an edge under like a him this would stop the fraying all together. I use a zig zag or serger to do my edges and if my cloth is small then I sew cotton fabric around the stitch cloth to make it bigger to fit in my q-snap or what ever I’m using. Happy stitching

Just found your flosstube. Your introduction of yourself was so much like myself, your history of stitching to just picking it up again. I started back up in 2022 and just can’t put the needle down! I too get stressed at the thought of too many WIPs at one time. I lost my father in 2020 to Alzheimer’s/Covid. Stitching gives me peace and I stitch while the hubby watches TV. Looking forward to watching you and your bestie stitch along.

@@susanpickett1997 Susan, you sound just like me. I lost my Stepdad (thought of him as my Dad!) Dec 2020 and then one month later, lost my FIL to COVID, Jan 2021. The loss of my stepdad sent my mom into a decline. So it’s been a very tough 4 years. I’m sorry to hear about your Dad. Alz is such a devastating disease. My Mom did not want to live like this, but we have no choice. We are essentially waiting for her body to shut down even though her mind is no longer cognitive. I too enjoy stitching for peace while hubby watches TV. So relaxing. Thank you for your kind words and for watching!

Hello Tracy.. I am so glad I found your flosstube.. I loved all of your projects they were beautiful! And wow are you a fast stitcher. I’m also a monogamous stitcher for the most part😂. I think if I had more than 2 going at the same time I would be to stressed! I’m 66 years old and have been married 46 years. I have cross stitched for ever but really picked it back up in 2019 when my husband had to have a quadruple heart bypass. And now I can’t get enough. I have 2 daughters and 1 son, from my son 1 granddaughter that is 17 and from my youngest daughter I have 1 granddaughter that is 7 and 1 grandson that is 4.. all of them are the joy of my life! Thank you so much for your kind words! We sound very similar! I got married at 19, have been married for almost 41 years and have 1 son and two daughters! I only have 2 grandkids at the moment but I’m praying hard for more. I stitched as a teen and young married and then quit when I started working after having my first two kids. After a 35 year hiatus, I was sucked back in by my Bestie. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it so much!

Hello from Tennessee. Great first video, I enjoyed seeing your beautiful stitching. I came back to stitching in 2018 after a 20 plus year hiatus because of Priscilla & Chelsea, love them. I stitched the same piece for my MIL in the mid eighties as well, she is 89 & it still hangs in her house. The piece I stitched for my Mom hangs in my house after I lost her. I'm probably 90% monogamous, I have 5 WIPS. I started a Prairie Schooler Santa tree last year & love it, hoping to add 12 new Santa's this year. I look forward to your next video & meeting Karen.

Hi Tracy, its nice to see someone who doesnt have many many Wips. I've always been a monogamous stitcher, then I started watching floss tube. I now have 3 but having a lot would make me anxious. Just watching someone with 50, 100 even 300 wips makes me anxious.
The best thing for your edges is to zig-zag around but since you don't sew maybe do a whip stitch to stop the fraying. If you're going to make it into a pillow you only need a 1/2" margin. Since you're worried about your uneven margins you could start in the middle but usually 2" margin is fine for framing. I hope you'll make more videos and Karen can join you.

Tracy, you are a ball! Wow am I impressed at all you have stitched, one piece at a time! Your pieces are precious! I must recommend that you watch Hollis Hands Creates since you are a KC Chiefs fan. She lives in Kansas City and they have season tickets! We love that team because Patrick Mahomes was in the Big 12, playing for Texas Tech. We are big Longhorn fans in college ball, but we love the Chiefs. I’ve been a fan of Andy Reid for years and I was so happy when he went to KC and drafted Patrick. I knew that young man would get the best preparation possible, and he has proven that. I have been a follower of Jane and Julie from their first video and I am so sad that they’ve had to stop. We all need to keep them in our prayers. Hi, loved your floss tube! I also got back into cross-stitch after a long hiatus! I took a break from both cross stitch and quilting for about 20-25 years to raise my family , go back to school and start a teaching career! But I am so happy to have time to stitch again!
Don’t give up on your Autumn piece! The same thing happened to me. What I did was sew about a 3” strip of cotton fabric to the side of the cross stitch fabric that was too close to the stitching. It worked like a charm! If you don’t sew, ask a friend that sews or quilts - most have tons of scrap fabric!

Hi and welcome to the world of cross stitch and flosstube! A corner gauge will help your stitching too close to the edges issue. A lot of people also choose to center start, but your kind of obviously used to a side/top or bottom start.

Thank you! I've thought about starting in the center, but if it's a big piece, I have to count the stitches over to the left and then... well, ya know... probably a lot of frogging in my future. hahahaha. I will look up a corner gauge. Haven't heard of that! Thank You!

@@stitchingwithyourbesties Hello, I enjoyed your first video, and I hope you do more. being a monogamous stitcher isn't something you have to "get over" lol like it's a bad condition... flosstube has conditioned us to think that LOTS of works in progress is required to be an interesting stitcher, and it just... isn't. Do what pleases you. Next, if you want to do a center start: First - make a few red or yellow basting stitches at what you decide is the "top" of your fabric. It's very easy when first beginning your project to get disoriented and hold it upside down the next time you work on it.
Next, your pattern chart has an arrow at the top which marks the center, and another arrow at either side which marks the center. Follow those two lines or columns to the find the center of the pattern... it doesn't have to be EXACT, just the general area of a 10x10 box that's in the center. If you have a working copy of your pattern, circle it or highlight that spot. Next fold your fabric in half vertically and firmly crease the fold near the center with your fingers... open it and fold again horizontally. press the fold again, very firmly. Gently open the fabric, and where the two creases cross is the center! You can baste a few threads into that center spot to mark it until you no longer need it. That's where you begin stitching your first 10x10 block. No real counting required. I generally prefer a left upper corner start, but that's just habit. I measure in two or three inches from the top and side and mark the location with a few red threads, then start my pattern.
Best wishes and hope to see you and your bestie very soon! xoxo

Great first flosstube. My bestie lives in Texas and I live in Montana. We both like quilting and cross stitching.
I have jumped on too many bandwagons and have too many wips. My goal was to get some of those finished this year. My progress came to a halt when I had carpal tunnel and trigger thumb surgery on both hands. Hopefully I’ll be back at it soon. I do like to have a Christmas project going and a 4th of July (I want to do land of liberty so bad!) 😂project. I like to have something easy to work on in my car when I’m waiting or have a few minutes to kill. I like to have a Sunday stitch. I find stitching on black easiest in natural light so I’m okay with a day project and an evening project (tv or bedroom stitching with a light). Still, I’d like to get my wip number down. There’s soooo many beautiful things I want to stitch. I have a serger so that usually how I finish my edges. Sometimes I use fraycheck… I just use a tiny bit along the edge

Hello! I think your video was great! I find finishing difficult too. When starting a new project I use the fabric calculator either on fatquater shop or lindystitches, from that info I measure my fabric and so far I have been able to center things alright. I’m not a center starter so I always try to measure literally with a ruler. It’s not perfect because the “tightness” varies with brands and whatnot, but that’s how I get close enough to not mess things up too badly 🤞😂. You are very natural on camera. I’m excited to meet your friend someday when it works out. I hope you continue to make videos. I don’t have many projects ever going either. I have one in timeout, a new small I’m almost done with and one large full coverage. My brain can’t handle having much more than that undone either! I enjoy watching whatever people have to show, all the things or just a few of them. They are all special things to us as individuals 😊. I’m sorry to hear about your mother, that is a tough situation, also I’m sorry for the loss of your dad. Prayers for you 🙏. Nice job, Tracy. I zig zag the edge of my fabric and that works just great. Doesn’t have to be a tight zig zag. If you like taping the edge of your fabric, perhaps try the Frog tape. It’s a painter’s tape that has better adhesion than the blue stuff. It’s a bit more pricey, but might be worth it.

It was fun to watch your video. Like you, I have just picked up cross stitch after a 30+ year hiatus. I am also a monogamous stitcher and I am currently working on something for my daughter in law for Christmas. I am trying not to fall down the same path that I did with scrapbooking where I bought ALL THE THINGS and now they sit. I promised myself that I wouldn't buy anything more until this first cross stitch is done.

Girl... I think I just walked into your church where you are preaching to the choir... hahahaha. I sit here now in my "studio" with ALL THE THINGS mocking me for the THOUSANDS of dollars I've spent on my crafting habit. Scrapbooking, digital scrapbooking, card making, rug hooking, cross-stitching, acrylic tumblers, tole-painting, stained glass... I could go on and on and on..... No one wants to buy what I've quit using. But that's okay... I'm a creator and it makes me happy. Amen.

Hi and welcome! Loved watching your video and hope you will do more. I am not a monogamous stitcher (have about 20 projects but am trying to be better and finish some) but identify with so much of the rest of what you are hesitating and questioning. I hope we get to meet your bestie. I took a 30-ish year break and started back in 2022 with a full coverage (don’t make that mistake! 😊). Looking forward to seeing more of your projects and hope one day to meet up at a retreat.

Oh Beth, wouldn't that be wonderful to meet up? I do have a retreat that I signed up for for 2025! I'll mention that in my next video. My Bestie is excited to join me so I hope that she will be available soon. Love to you!

Such a fun first video and can’t wait to meet your bestie. I’m back to cross stitch after a 30 year break too and am 95% monogamous, I prefer smaller count linen and stitch on one project at a time and keep a prairie schooler on the called for fabric as my car project. I’m not a finisher and use the services of a framer and have sent a few projects to a finisher so I can actually have the finished project in my house and not in a drawer! As far as how to keep your fabric from fraying, I’ve heard you can use pinking shears around the edges? However, I’ve decided to try to purchase my fabric from places that surge the edges, it’s just so much easer to stitch on.

Thank you for your kind words! We sound VERY similar. Great tips and I love the idea of keeping a Prairie Schooler in the car. How does one go about finding a "finisher"? Do people advertise that service, by chance? If I cannot figure out my sewing machine (which is old), I may have to throw in the towel and get someone. Can you tell me where you purchase your fabric from with the surged edges? Thank you in advance and I look forward to getting to know each other through FlossTube!

I have the same door basket and fyi it was from Southern Living when I received it as a card club prize.
Wish you had recorded before I ordered the called for fabric Prairie Schooler Santas that I haven’t started yet. 😊

Oh... dang.... Yeah... about that... Wait for my FlossTube #2 which I'm filming this week (I have to visit my Mom tomorrow which takes a whole day and then I need to pick out another day that I want to be forced to put on makeup again... twice in one week?? Who does that??) because I'm gonna show the difference between 18 count Davos Putty and 18 count Vintage Country Mocha. I like the second one better. But that's just me. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I'm just tickled!

Hello Pittsburgh! I love your town and visited it once, 32 years ago. I've always wanted to go back as we have great friends there, but life gets in the way. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I was tickled to see these!

Hi Tracy, I loved your first flosstube and seeing what you are working on. I understand the struggle of finishing and it being straight. When you stated talking about I was like same here lol . No matter how hard I try, one side is always crooked lol. I am a newbie to the sewing world and I got so frustrated today trying to sew a pillow that I just threw it away😂. I have about 20 wips and I have been working to get some finished. I don’t want many more wips. I am stitching Every Opening Flower. I love pretty much everything Brenda Gervais designs. I live in Arkansas and have a Flosstube too. I hope you film again soon and I can’t wait to meet Karen. Happy Stitching 🧵🪡

Sara, I THINK (?) I might have seen your channel? I'm definitely going to look it up now! We will figure out this finishing, right? Vonna and Priscilla make it look so easy! I cannot wait to get to know you better and we can be "Besties". Thank you for your kind words.

A very fun first video. What count fabric did you use for your prairie school Santa’s?

The first two were on 18 count Davos Putty. I'm going to record my second FlossTube this week and I've actually planned on showing what I'm stitching them on now, which is 18 count Vintage Country Mocha. I like it better. I'll show you the two side-by-side. Stay tuned and thank you for your kind words.

I am not complaining just didn’t know if you’re aware that the screen is so small it’s hard to see what you are showing. God Bless

Thank you for your comment! I’m not sure what you mean but would love to fix it. Do you mean that I need to get closer to the camera when showing my stitching?

    • @stitchinggrannyof18
      @stitchinggrannyof18 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@stitchingwithyourbesties it’s a small frame. Usually when people video with a phone and upright it’s a narrow picture. I learned to use mine landscape phone side to side long ways to fill a tv screen. I used to do videos but made all mine private. Just enjoy retired life now. It kind of looks like you are filming from a camera? I’m not sure . When you play back your video by going straight to your play list you will see that it’s a large black frame around. I watch on tv so I can see better but it was still small. . It will take time. It’s a learning process. Thanks for sharing your videos

@@stitchinggrannyof18 Thank you for all the tips. I always film in landscape but what I think is happening is that my intro has some portrait pictures and that determines the layout of the video. I didn’t realize. I hope you watch my new one and give me a shout if it’s still the same. Thank you again!

@@stitchingwithyourbesties that’s what I didn’t understand cause my intros were always on portrait and it never did that. I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Happy stitching
