Thank you for covering this. I’m too young to remember the tragedy itself, I’m certainly old enough to remember the campaigning by the families and others. And to benefit from a less laissez-faire attitude to safety in dance halls and night clubs.
I’m as cynical as be damned, but even I can’t get my head around how a proper inquest wasn’t held for 43 years.

Mick - fine job. Horrific story. Excellent touch starting and ending with the list of Stardust fire fatalities. One problem with tragedies like this is that the victims can quickly become statistics. It was directed stuff at the victims' families and survivors - that judge Murphy holding Christy Moore in contempt and banning his 1985 song "They Never Came Home" that gives this film its title was a low blow.
That priest was thoughtless to Antoinette Keegan but that matron was a right wagon. David Tucker shouldn't be near any investigation the way he fits things to his theory and disregards witness statements from BOTH inside and outside the venue, he was really clutching at straws wondering if Linda Bishop's watch was wrong! At least that professor knew his onions anyway.
How the Butterlys got away with it with massive compo even though it was deemed "probably" arson and that they were partially responsible is beyond belief, let alone what transpired after and taking 43 years to get to today. Different tragedies but there are some similarities to the Hillsborough disaster's aftermath.
RIP all the Stardust victims and their family members who have passed since. Hope this bittersweet result helps survivors and surviving families to cope and gives some comfort. All the best, Brian.

I live in the North of England and can’t believe I have never heard of this terrible tragedy. It’s another example of families having to fight for the truth and for someone to be held accountable for what happened to their loved ones. It reminds me of Hillsborough and the Marchioness disaster. If the families were not so determined to get answers then the authorities would just sweep it under the carpet as if the victims lives don’t matter. So sorry for everyone affected by this harrowing event. RIP to the victims and hope the families find some kind of peace ❤
