    some times this is a go to tool especially when closeness wont allow a box end or open end and no room for a socket much better than pliers prior to the different sizes that available now us old mechanics cut ours down and made the size we needed nice to see that Irwin makes such a vast assortment

    If I recall the "USA" ones, pre 2008 when the company was sold and manufacturing moved to overseas, have the rivet or "roll pin" on the lower part of the handle flattened/smooth out where the later ones and current ones that are made in China/Taiwan have the rivet sticking out like the ones you have. Take for what its worth but I have on old pair that I inherited from my dad and sure enough that one rivet is smooth (and does show "Made in USA")

    I've probably got around 100 assorted pair around the farm in different tool boxes and work bench drawers. Some I bought new but most came from auctions and flea market's. Many different brand's from the Irwin original to Craftsman to Leverwrench and other makes. Some were good design's and some not so much. I hope yours last the 50 year's some of mine have!

    I need to get a set of those vise grip pliers because they do come in handy. I will look to see if the company sell them out of their store first.

    Nice set but Irwin stuff seems expensive, well here in the UK at least. I bought a set of grips from Aldi or Lid stores the other month, got a long nose & round pipe pair in there, really pleased with them so far.

    Vise Grip pliers are one of the most used tools I have, but only by the brand name, I have tried the cheaper ones and they are pure junk, I went to a swap meet last year and got several different pairs, they were in very good shape and not real expensive.

    In 2003, the company officially changed its name to Irwin Industrial Tool Company. In 2008, Irwin announced the closing of its DeWitt, Nebraska plant, ending 80 years of American production for Vise-Grips, citing a necessity to move production to China "to keep the Vise-Grip name competitive."

Thank you for your help, have a good day..

    You can read the Irwin tool company history here - www.irwin.com/about-us/irwin-history. It was around the early 1990s they moved manufacturing to Asia. I have both; older, US made Vice-Grips and some newer ones. The Asia made tools are pretty nice, but I still think the older, US made ones were a bit better.

    They were made in the US until 2008 then the owners Newell Rubbermaid said they had to move production to China. I can a bit of difference between an older pair and the newer ones but not much. I won't by any other than Irwin's original design from Petersen. Any others I have across sold in the US are junk. I even have a pair from Craftsman from back in the 70s or early 80s and I curse the release lever when I get crazy enough to use it. The modern copies you see sold cheap aren't worth the hassle.

  • @simonrichard9873
    @simonrichard9873 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this is overkill. I have one standard vise grip and one long nose and that's enough for me. I mostly use them to cut fuel when I remove a gas tank that does not have a shutoff or to old down lawn mower safety bars when adjusting carbs.

    Unfortunately made in China now, but still a good product. I have a few of the Milwaukee Torque Lock pliers, I think they feel more solid. And I like the tightening screw better on the Milwaukee ones because you can stick a screwdriver in and easily turn to tighten while its clamped. With Vice-Grips you either have to unclamp, readjust and then reclamp, or put another vice-grip on it to tighten while clamped which still doesn't give you much force.

    The original vise grip made in the U.S. of A are awesome tools the Irwin made in China are very good but don't come close to the one's made in the USA I just can't understand why Irwin went to China to get fucked, when they had it all going good in the USA, I painstakingly collected most of the vise grip tools one by one on the market, and proud to own them! The Chinese cheap copies are a piece of shit (not the Irwin made in China) Sennen Antonio Dourado Wisconsin Milwaukee
