      Random question, but whats the best way to pain mini's with cloak, have it off and paint or have it as one piece, I ask because I struggle with painting the inside of the cloak, but I see others painting its as all one piece, any tips?

    Honestly, the way you painted the face on the 2nd mini is astounding. Making the inside of that collar really dark, it straight up feels like I'm looking at a extremely high-fidelity rendered illustration. Like 16:12 , that's ridiculous how much depth it has. Excellent stuff dude, would love to see a dedicated wet-blending video, even if Ive seen dozens of them already from others.

    Loving both versions - as an OG Squat fan from the 80s. The second, more 'painterly', stylised version wins hands down for me - the palette very reminscent of early Bitmap Bros games - strong Speedball II vibes (the Amiga original version). Great work.

    You've got exactly the same issue with AK Interactive primer as I had. I've switched to Pro-Acryl from Monument Hobbies primer and I'll never look back. It has the finish of Stynylrez but the ease of use (and ease of cleaning the airbrush; Stynylrez almost destroyed my brand new Cult of Paint Infinity airbrush after one use, weird stuff) of AK or Vallejo primer. Give it a try, lad.
    Edit* the stability of your hand makes me envious, sad and angry all at the same time, I can brace really securely and still look like I've got Parkinsons disease versus your hand 😂

    As a guy with a blonde birthmark in his hair, the slightly lighter patch of hair on the first mini makes me happy. I was always very self consious of my birthmark as a child and even got bullied because of it, but over time I learned to love the part of me that is different to most people, it helps me to feel unique and possibly connects me to my ancestors as it's an element of my D.N.A that may have been passed on from one of them (or maybe it's just a random genetic mutation), either way it's part of who I am, and it makes me feel special, so seeing characters that share a similar aesthetic makes me feel less alone and reminds me of how I was able to find the importance of not letting insecurity prevent me from seeing the beauty of being different.

    AK paints are very good, but primer has some problems. It clogs airbrush a lot, is so extremely matt that it is hard to wetblend on it, and is very fragile. I tried to varnish it, but it didn’t work very well, and I came back to GSW, Vallejo and Badger.

    I don't particularly like the super smooth blending of the second mini. I have always thought it makes that look like a flat painting, something that looks better in a photograph as part of a diorama, not something three dimensional.
    The highlight and shadow on the second one only make sense if you are actively imagining the light source where the shadow/highlight is suggesting it is, rather than the actual real light source you are observing the mini under. This always makes it look unnatural to me.

    The black background really makes a big difference. Would've been interesting when they had shown all the other entries with a background of their choice.
    I like to watch the illustriational style more, as it has a longer period of "what is he doing?! that can't work" than the more methodical method. But that might just be from familiarity.

    Nice demonstration! This actually helps me a lot, since my painting look has never fallen into any category I've seen on line, but seeing these two made me realize mine is almost smack in the middle. I've played with a couple approaches, but I generally like the smoother, more uniform lightning and color of the non-traditional approach, but with a little more contrast to specific material differences, such as hard armor plate vs leather or metal equipment. This is just based on my own experiences being out in muddy, dusty combat environments and looking around, then imagining 'Okay, what if guys weren't wearing camo, but more vibrant colors? And then had all this dirt and dust everywhere and grime in all the cracks.' So you get spots that're sorta clean and vibrant compared to the surrounding dirt and dingy parts.
    Anyway, great video, as always. Love seeing your more practical approach to painting and.. well, GW.

    • @trovarion
      @trovarion  ปีที่แล้ว

      cool, thanks for sharing your story! Never worry if you "fit" into any category with painting. just always paint the way you enjoy and get the results you enjoy! It's your minis, your time spent, your hobby.

    • @stormycatmink
      @stormycatmink ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trovarion One thing I've found helpful about 'fit', however, is it makes it easier to narrow down my search if I want to improve something. I was never one to conform anyway, but I do like having guidelines and examples to start from. Seeing two styles tackle the same problem side by side is very helpful for those who want to tread their own ground and make their own style. They can pick a bit from each since it's easier to see what they have in common, and what they don't. Would be helpful to see more of that kind of thing. Maybe that's a recurring theme you could lean on if you need ideas at some point? Paint the same model in different styles and methods, side by side. Help people learn how to mix and match elements.
