Silvertone 1474, Part 2: Victory at Last

  • In this second of two videos, Channel 2 of the Silvertone 1474 amplifier continues to sound awful for three different reasons: 1.) Bad capacitors 2.) Reverb bleed-through 3.) A seriously-damaged speaker voice coil. Watch as all three problems are corrected and the amp is finally restored to full functional capability. A thorough audio demonstration is conducted, including a surprisingly good sounding reverb effect, and to celebrate, we head out to the workshop to install a '32 Ford grille shell on the Model A Rat Rod.

Silvertones didn't sound this good when they were new. I kind of regret all the ones I scoffed at over my younger years. They are loaded with potential. I am most impressed with the floor repair considering what you had to attach it back to. You do some very good work.

Another great video Uncle Doug! I really enjoy when you make these crazy discoveries like with the voice coil. I’ve torn down quite a few speakers and I’ve not ever seen one voice coil become unwrapped like that. It makes me wonder just how long that speaker has sounded like that. Also, loved your pot replacement. That switch was a great idea and totally fixed this amp. These are such unique amplifiers. Nice work, Buddy

Back in the 60s, when I was an aspiring garage band guitarist, I saw a lot of Silvertones. My best friend had one of these. And while it could never match the Fender tones we were hearing and coveting, my friend, with his Silvertone and Strat on the bridge pickup, could always cut through the mix and be heard.

The dim bulb current limiter is an essential tool for guitar amplifier repair.
Many years ago I built several “dim bulb” current limiter units with 3 lamp sockets and several switches. Usually I fill the sockets with 60W, 200W, and 300W conventional incandescent bulbs. By flipping the switches I can get a wide range of current limits. The rig has an on/off switch and a pilot light. There is also a bypass switch to apply full power when desired. One of my units includes a hefty 1:1 isolation transformer rated at about 1200W. I also have a 15A Variac but I don’t use it near as often as the dim bulb units.

The new cat looks just like a cat that has come to live at my home. It is so good that you help these stray kitties. We do, and they love us for it! Dark roast and a Silvertone amp restored, best thing since sliced bread! What a monster! Should have casters just to take it out to a 60s Classic Rock gig! I would have been in 7th heaven back in the day if I would have had this guy! I did not know Sears had so many models to choose from. In my town you only got to choose from their smaller amps. Most of the time my Sears catalogs were used for either propping up my baby sister at the dinner table or they went to my relatives who did not have an inside toilet! Either way, to reference what Sears and Monkey Wards offered in their catalogs for musical instruments and amps, was almost impossible. So off to the Sears store I went. Great video! Look forward to the next. The Hot rod is looking good! Thanxz

You did a great speaker analysis and repair.
I don't think that I've ever seen the wire scenario before in the gap.
I kept looking at the speaker cone for moisture warpage near the voice coil while you were working.
That's some excellent tech work my good man.
Also, your kindness to roaming critters is most commendable.
My daughter is an official feral cat afficanado.
They stalk me and they adore her, lol. I can't count how many we've been through or helped over the last twenty year's. She will get them shots and or fixed.
We had a rare six toe'd tortoise shell male that was living in my grove for awhile, but he was much too wise for my tuna laced live trap and moved on to another place. It's slowed down since last winter, as the coyote packs ravished most of the rabbits in the grove.
    They come and they go..

Reading through the comments I see I’m not the only one that enjoys an Uncle Doug presentation while enjoying a cup of Joe. As for the amp, a masterful restoration as usual, I myself could not live with Silvertone reverb. I would go for a “resto-mod”, new tank, anything but that garage door spring sound. A 32’ Ford grill is one of thee most classic and iconic pieces of Americana there is. I suggest the name Tangelo for the new kitty.

      @UncleDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks, Jim. I do think the reverb in this particular amp is acceptable.....not optimum.....but acceptable, unlike most Silvertones.

Yay, clever with the switch Doug! I never wanted to admit it because some people are precious about keeping original parts in there, but I do the "scorched Earth" thing almost every time. And yup, almost EVERY Sangamo green cap I come across is bad. Just don't stand the test of 50 years or so. Not sure you can fault them though. Thanks Doug, as always this was great!

oh yeah..i almost forgot. the tube and tube circuit boards are VU meters. the magic eye types. the microphones on the boards can be used or a line level signal input. both adjustable through the little pots on the boards themselves. :-) the coloured chicken head knobs were a nice touch too.

Very good idea about "spot welding" those nuts to the "brackets"...BTW, excellent video as always and glad that the 1474 came thru with flying colors. You have a great following of the cat community...ditto here as I'm feeding one. Unfortunately, it was snowing/sleeting last evening so I could not fill the bowl with food. Think I will have to make a small house on the side deck for the Cat Drive-In !

A new Uncle Doug video... nice way to spend a rainy evening. One observation regarding "Silvertone" amps... Nate Daniel (no relation) never was one for spending money on quality components. However, much of his stuff did work... for a while. I guess that's what Sears wanted... Anyways, this is one of the better Silvertone amps I've heard. Sometime I'll relate the story of how I came to dislike them...

In the end... its pretty clear why these amps were always considered a mid level product even back in the day. Serious players always worked their way up to a Fender.. and later other brands such as Vox, Highwatt, and Marshall. .. and even later, Sunn and Kustom. I remember bass players also liked Ampeg. Thank goodness I had a well to do friend that loaned me his '64 ProReverb, and then a bit later I got my own blackface Vibrolux Reverb. Its been with me 50 years now. Silvertone has arrived though, separate head and 2x 12" cab. Its a basement case... moisture damaged.. but we are committed to resto-mod it back into function. I am very surprised as to how well your 1474 came out. Very very nice!!!

delaminated voice coil. now...off pause and continue. ok..back on pause...BINGO! :-). surprised to see this though without the coil being burned to a semi crispy atete. usually i have found delamination problems are due to clipping damage turning the little buggers into room heaters. ok...back off pause.edit: excellent job getting this amp to sound like something useful. :-)
