  • Knee surgery is no joke! Four months after my total knee replacement done with Stryker Mako robotic surgery, I compiled video clips of my recovery journey. See my first days after surgery, clips from therapy, and progress. I summarized my journey at the end for you, giving tips and tricks that I learned while recovering.
Many have asked about the pants from Amazon that I wore in the video (I am NOT affiliated with Amazon; I just found these pants to be great for after surgery.) Here is the link:

Mrs. Joan, I had Bilateral total knee surgery Sept.22. I did so much research, and read and watched everything I could get my hands on! Bought things that would be beneficial to success. I have had a remarkable go of it so far…minimal pain…only one night at hospital…Husband took two weeks off to take care of me. You are showing not only your story…but my story as well!!! I am getting stronger everyday..Keep shining for the Lord😊He is worthy. Jesus I trust you… was a sticker that I had made and what I had the nurse put over my IV❤tube. God bless you, love Debbie

I had total knee replacement the end of Sept. My second week post op was the most painful. My entire leg was swollen, my skin was tight and I had a large bruise on the back of my calf. I needed to elevate my leg, higher than my heart and keep it iced. It is so important to stay on top of the pain with the pain meds. Do not wait until it starts hurting. I am now seven weeks post op and have physical therapy through the month of Dec. I go twice a week for PT and do the same exercises at home each day. I used a walker for two weeks and a cane one week. I get around pretty well now. The pain is subsiding but not totally gone. When I sleep I have a pillow under the full length of my leg. My knee is a bit tight yet to have my leg completely flat on the bed. I dealt with a lot of pain for months before surgery since my knee was bone on bone. Messaging the scar area with cocoa butter helps break up scar tissue. My knee still feels a bit tight, but it's expected. Looking forward to yardwork next spring.

I had my first TKR Aug 31 2023 and second December 26 2023. It hurts like a dog biscuit especially the first month and I am not going to lie about it. I had no idea how bad, day 3&4 are the worst, but by 3 weeks it starts to slowly get better. Getting up off a low chair, couch, or anything short is very hard without help impossible for me.for 2 months. It hurts to stand for the first 15 -20 feet especially. Then walking is easier. It has been 3 1/2 half months now since the second surgery and it is still early, but the pain in my actual knees is gone. I have a long way to go, but from being bone on bone pain for so long and now not being afraid to take a step is wonderful. My right knee before surgery would have this slipping down feel that shot pain through the roof. I really had no choice, but to get these 2 surgeries. As painful as they were I am very happy I did it because I see I am getting better. Don't suffer the rest of your life with that severe knee pain. One knee would lock up and the other jam with a severe slipping down feel, but now I have no fear of that ever again! It is a hard road back, but you can do it. I look forward to getting better and better.

Great video! I had my knee replacement on my right knee June 22nd and my left knee August 22 so I am now almost 2 months out from my last surgery. My recovery has been like yours, but seeing you go up and down those stair has me in awe. I am now going to start practicing that. The recovery on my second surgery seems to be a little slower than the first but with the help of the out patient therapy, I am sure I will get better. Thanks for your video. Hi Kathy. I had my TKR on February 20, 2023. I’m also in my sixties. I’m not in great shape physically. Pain Meds and icing have been keeping me comfortable but I’m still in pain. I went to my second therapy session yesterday. My therapist stretched my leg in a few ways. Yes, it hurt, but afterwards, for the rest of the day, I felt less pain. I have other health issues that may be causing me more pain than usual. I don’t know for sure. I was just wondering how you’re coming along.

Thank you for your video! 😊I had my TKR 7 weeks ago. Went through everything that you mentioned as well. Yes, it hurt more than I had expected- the first 2-3 weeks are a blur. My husband was my steadfast nurse cook and bottle washer . I suddenly realized that I turned a corner and my spirits improved. The remaining issue is the tightness (a vise) around my knee which is keeping me from getting past 115 degrees sitting-96 degrees
lying on the PT bed. I am able to walk
unassisted and ride a recumbent bike. Stretch your calves and hamstrings. Motion is lotion!

Had my TKR on March 29th 2023 and personally wanted to die the pain was so BRUTAL. Given Endone every 3 hours which for me did nothing. On the 31st the pain management team came and put me on Fentynal drip for 2 and a half days. Then I was able to do a few exercises. Tried the ice machine but that caused me more pain. Warmth has been the solution for some pain. Hydrotherapy twice a week, Physiotherapist comes to my home once a week. The other days I use a tens machine each morning for 30 minutes then electric MASSAGE for 10 minutes. I then use my hands to MASSAGE GENTLY the scar and total area of TKR.
Personally every bodies body is different. Some can get through with little pain some, like me have a high pain level. I had my ex husband came and stayed to help me ( I have 2 cats ) and am now being carerd for by my aged care provider - I live in Australia. No two people have the EXACT same experience.. For me I have never experienced such BRUTAL pain that sent me into depression for a few weeks. I do hope people have a better experience than myself. Things are much better now but it takes around 12 to 18 months or more to fully heal.

Going to Pain management next week for the nerve pain and just completed my physical therapy yesterday. I also have issues with bursitis in my hip along with sciatica so it makes it difficult to sit for long periods of time. I really feel like I would be farther along if I could sit longer. My bending is around 108 to 110 and extension is at 0. Your video has really encouraged me to give it my all even thru all this pain. Thank you.

I’m 7 weeks now and still in therapy 3 times a week and use a cane due to the weak quad. Still hurt. Stiff some days and have that tight band feeling. I get frustrated, thinking I’m behind caused myself so much stress I started losing my hair. I regret it still. I try and do the I’m strong thing but some days I don’t want to be anymore. I just stumbled across your channel and oh my goodness thank you for sharing this. I am 65 yr old and having total knee replacement next month. When I saw you walk up and down those steps on wee 7 my heart filled with tears. I have don the bridal step up and down stairs so many years now, I would go up and down like you did. I’m getting married in 4 months and I pray I can walk down that aisle. I’m so proud of you and thank you again. Oh I subscribed too.

I had left knee replacement surgery on March 1st, 2024. I've healed up very nicely. Had my 2 weeks in home therapy and am doing 2-3 days weekly out patient therapy. I finally got in my head that my knee wasn't going to bust open when I tried to bend it. 😊 I'm truly trying to bend it more each day. It is so painful bending it. Take my cane with me just in case. I have a leg bike I try to do 3-4 17 minute sessions on it. My question is how did you sleep at now?I wake up and my leg is aching and I can't go right back to sleep. I feel tired like I have no energy at all. Once I got up and moving I tried to stay moving and bending my leg as much as possible. It's hard but I keep pushing on. I need to get that mobility back and back to normal and work. Your video was truly inspirational and I agreed with everything you discussed. Prayers are with you and thank you for taking the time to motivate and take all those tkr people on their journey ahead.

I thought that too at times. But keep moving forward, one day at a time. Slowly you'll begin to see improvement.

Hello Mrs. Joan. I don’t know if you will ever see this but I want to thank you for posting your journey. I am 12 weeks outside and could only do stairs one by one. I tried coming up normal and it worked! All praises to GOD. You have inspired me. I want to thank you and I wanted you to know that you have blessed me. Thanks so much.

What has helped me is a lift chair and I've been outpatient all the time. My goals is to go back to work! Am determined to conquer 17 stairs to get to my office!
