Man, I respect your craft so much. I can tell you put 110% effort into growing mushrooms which is amazing.
How can you tell? Are you a grower?
I keep a bale of straw for emergencies. I used straw/Satan's substrate, starting out. I grew Pink oyster on plain straw, a 5-8 lb bag usually took three bags to produce a pound first flush. Second flush was less. I used the money I made selling them to move up to Hardwood and Alfalfa. I can't find Soy Hull pellets anywhere around me. I can't get over a two pound first flush with alfalfa. Working my way up to getting the money to order soy pellets. I don't pasteurize or sterilize my substrates, I don't have the equipment or the money yet. I make bags in a bedroom, with no flo cabinet. My contamination rate is usually 1-2 bags out of 50. I run my spawn rate high so it colonizes faster. One day I will be on your level, Mike. 🤘😜🍄
How does a grower deal with the plastic waste, especially if you grow on an industrial level like these guys?
Since every block seems to bloom in a plastic bag...
@@tchavdarpavlov834 I've heard the bags they use are a lot more biodegradable than normal plastics

@@endymionspr9916 sorry, what do you mean by "a flow hood" huh? I live in Indonesia. I only cultivate some mushrooms including oyster mushrooms, ear mushrooms, lingzhie mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms. .

You do not need a flow hood Jamur, but it helps. A flow hood he is talking about above, is for indoor growing to help maintain clean spores environment.

I just went out and found Reishi in the forests of Gatineau. If I hadn't had watched videos by Southwest Mush and Learn Your Land I would have never even known that Reishi existed! I'm really excited to try them out, I took two small ones from a 20 foot log that was absolutely full of them

How do you guys deal with plastic waste, since it seems every block blooms in a plastic bag or some kind of plastic wrapping and you are doing this on a large, industrial scale?

I think the biggest factor is cost. I use straw because it's cheap. I can get 40 pound straw bales for 4 or 5 dollars. For 40 pounds of hardwood pellets I can't get local for cheaper than $13.

Beet also works well of you can't get soy beans.
I can feel you Bro... All supplements and all other stuff ( Flowhood fans, All American , etc.) to get in Germany is almost impossible 😢 …it sounds like a business idea for someone 😄👍

Or you need to add 200 Euro for shipping...:D
Alfalfa feed pellets might work as a substitute.
straw is more forgiving in terms of moisture levels and atmospheric conditions around (in the sense, you can afford to make some mistakes here). but the problem with straw is managing storage and bagging during large scale production. so i recently switched from straw to sawdust. i realised i need to be extra careful about all the parameteres when dealing with sawdust, not so much with paddy straw though.

Man i love your content. I'm the same way about straw as you and found that even though the Biological Efficiency of straw is higher than wood for oyster strains I still prefer the process of pellets.
You can get straw pellets

@@johnbrzenksforearm8295 I guess that depends where you live, here straw pellets are readily available and cheap and hardwood is really hard to find and very expensive.
Always good and I always learn something. In Vietnam, they like straw. It's sterilized with lime, drained, and allowed to heat and cool before inoculating. Rice straw is used, and for that, rice paddy mushrooms do best, but it's used for most mushrooms. For me, straw is much better because oak is expensive.

How long does it usually take after you inoculate your oak substrate before you start seeing growth?
Perhaps you might consider trying a bit of grain adjunct in addition to the straw. In times of limited resource availability, options are the best way to the other side.

I wonder if the spent blocks will make good gravels. I know it will make good crude oil, especially if you lock it up in a tank.

How do u guys manage ur plastic consumption and recycling? With all the bags, supplies, syringes, and etc . U guys are producing alot of product. Just hope ur doing something about that part. Otherwise good stuff!
i dont like straw either, its messy & does not hold the moisture as well as sawdust+soy+bran & my straw blocks took a month to fully colonize & not the 5 to 9 days like the sawdust blocks.
That is interesting in my case is the oposite i have tried lions mane, regular oyster and King oyster on straw vs hardwood and the hardwood block take ages to colonize but the straw ones colonize really fast. At this time i only had a first flush of lions mane on both straw and hardwood and the straw block produced more than double the weight of the hardwood one.
Btw i used straw pellets way easier to use and without the mess of the regular straw.
It also depends on the strain you are using. If you have a strain that was developed on hard wood, it won't do well. And vice versa

@@marcuss5330 not much, just use to make some of the best soil on earth 🤓…mushroom compost is a premium soil building product, worth every penny

Could you tell me what is this flow hood of yours and where to get one?
I tried watering a mushroom block(a grey oyster) directly(I even ask the seller if it's doable and they said it is one way we do it) though.... Now the mushroom block is now basically dead, mouldy, unusually warm and infested with fungus gnats.
It's weird how some mushroom blocks can be watered somewhat generously and doesn't get such problems.
You should try oak+soybean and a small amount of straw
Surely Oak only comes from Dead trees? we need More Trees, not less? Straw is sustainable Just saying. I pretty sure wild Fungi would prefer you to leave the Oak for them :-) That said, I love your videos, and thankyou for all the information..

The best biological efficiency I ever got with oyster mushrooms was with fermented corncob pellets supplemented with calcium. Almost 100%. If the cost of corncob pellets would go down that'd be the direction I personally would go with oysters.
