Yes, your mouth makes the shape for an English "Y," but the sound that comes out is like an English "j" or maybe "-dj." (If you wanna hear it very clearly, listen to a native speaker say "Medellin") The tongue makes contact with the roof of the mouth a little.
I am from Spain and I now live in the United States and I have a sincere question. Why is it that people from Spanish speaking countries or Hispanic\Latino backgrounds DEMAND that native born Americans pronounce Spanish words correctly, yet many of us "butcher" the English language and Americans do not become mad\offended? Seems like a double standard to me.

We Filipinos just like Latin Americans have Spanish surnames. We were territories of Spain who built our countries for almost 400 years.
