    0:52 dear Lordy lord those overtones

    • @athenalol
      @athenalol 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      1:00 is EXCEPTIONAL, as well! That pedal Eb that you hear isn't being played by any of the tubas, it's purely undertones, somehow being that loud
      (also, they're marching three valve horns, and you can't play pedal Eb without using a partial on a three valve :p)

    • @nxyuu
      @nxyuu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@athenalol undertones/subharmonics are really cool. When to waves of opposing frequencies interfere, they connect at rate which is correlated to the ratio of the two frequencies. For example, with two waves that have a ratio of 2:3 (a perfect fifth) they would clash once every two waves of the fundamental.
      So the ratio of | undertone : fundamental pitch : fifth above fundamental | would be 1 : 2 : 3

    Ah, yes - the year of the Fugue. For some reason, everyone was obsessed with Fugue in G minor in 2017 (I played it at TMEA All-State the same year). Saw a lot of other groups play it/incorporate it into their marching show as well that year. Great piece, though.

    • @jacobhanekamp2534
      @jacobhanekamp2534 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be weird at first, you just have to remember that, like the horns, he is also performing. In this setting, he has to be big because there are horn players behind him, if his motions are small, they won't be able to see him, and on the field, there are performers that are SUPER far away, so the large motion is actually quite small to them. Large conducting also conveys a large presence, it shows that it is supposed to be loud and exciting.

    • @ZonieMusic
      @ZonieMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heya! Justed wanted to let you know some more context for these horn performances to hopefully make you nore understanding of why its appropriate.
      1. As the previous commenter said, the midi-like playing is intentional and showcases the players' ability to be precise with each other's timing. If you see other videos, when the conductor stops, the sound drops almost instantly, with no player left behind.
      2. The conductor's large, linear, and very rigid movements are helpful for the way the players are arranged. Here, they are in arranged in a circle, where smaller, more subtle, movements maybe be hard to pick up for players that are behind the conductor's back. The rigidness also helps clearly communicate when the beats hit.
      Hope this helps!

    • @jacobhanekamp2534
      @jacobhanekamp2534 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tell me you're new to DCI, without telling me you're new to DCI.
      That "MIDI" sound is the players playing so precisely and in tune that it sounds like 1 person. That's the goal, and you get good points for being able to do it. (As my director always said, sound like 1 person, have the intensively of 50)
      And the Conductor. You have to be big like that. You can only face one group at a time (and they are in a semicircle) so being big is how everyone sees them. And not to mention that this piece is LOUD!!! The best way to show this to the crowd is with big (and I mean big) arm movements. You may say "but music is about hearing" oh but im here to tell you that a big part of the performance is what you SEE. There is a big reason why these corps spend literal DAYS drilling the same thing, over and over again! Most of the time, they aren't playing! They are marching without their horns, holding their hands in what I like to call Universal Playing Position (also known as UPP!!!!!)
      I hate going on big rants at 1:33am, but it has to be said.

    • @trumpetguy13
      @trumpetguy13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In Drum Corps, we liked to call this big rigid conducting technique “Downbeat, Patty cake, Chicken wing, Raise the roof.” It can also be referred to as “Please be obvious because I only have a split second to check the conductor because I’m jazz running at a bajillion beats per minute crossing the 25 on the back hash and have 17 lines to dress at the same time and I don’t want to be confused about what beat it is because if I miss the entrance we go from 1st to 11th place.” (Yes it’s a run-on sentence. It was meant to prove a point)
      Sorry it didn’t look cool to you though. Function > Form
