- This cat patrols the museum displays daily for the last 16 years. One time, Dude appeared in the museum’s backyard as a stray and has never left since. So now, he’s the one who meets the visitors and watches every exhibition before anyone else!

Having a cat at public places like a museum can generate a lot of community good will. Cats are great at public relations. Businesses know this too. There are YT videos of a cat that lives at a Lowes hardware store. People go there just to see the famous YT cat. Bet the cat increase sales by at least 20%, but there is no way of knowing the exact number.

The train museum in Ely, Nevada had a museum cat who lived in the very dirty workshop. He's passed on now, but when he was around he definitely had the look of a blue collar cat! Dust on the fur and grime under the "fingernails"! IIRC, they may have a new one.
Approaching unsuspecting visitors from a dinosaur exhibit, Dude has likely STARTLED plenty of museum guests. One of the perks of his job. And they thought sabre-toothed cats were extinct!

Am I saying that "Dude" reminds me of a museum conservator in the (redacted) XXXXX Museum of Natural History at the University I studied and worked in for decades on and off? No-no-no-no. Am I saying that the story of why a very old stuffed penguin ended up in the tropical exhibition room for 20 years due to a distraction involving the same curator was not part of the legend of that beautiful museum? No, not at all.
Just give this cat a diploma. 16 years of working as an exhibition assistant should qualify this cat for an honourable curator degree. (I am saying this as one of the proudest moments in my life - when my dog got an honourable 4 study points diploma in "Earth Science field studies" and even was recruited as the "external sensor" for the (quite informal) oral examination we held for PhD students after a yearly 2-week field-course in advanced fieldwork for a decade). Legends deserve recognition. This cat is an honourable curator as much as "movie stars" get honourable diplomas and degrees around the academic world for far less commitment to academia. This stray found a home in academia as more strays of the world should.

There also used to be a stray museum cat at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Nova Scotia named Erik the Red. One of the workers there had a collar made for him that read ;
"My name is Erik. I live on the Ship ACADIA at the Maritime Museum. I know my way home. Please put me down".
(Sadly, Erik passed about 10 years back...)

I think it was most likely that he was abandoned, as for a stray, he does seem quite overweight. Hopefully, as he is moving about as the semi director of the museum, he will be able to lose that excess weight and that should help his arthritis ❤️💖.
