  • I've restored 80% (4 of 5 games) of the first-ever Howard Cosell halftime highlights segment, shown during the initial ABC Monday Night Football broadcast between the Jets and Browns on September 21, 1970.
The halftime highlight segments were always notorious for using awful-quality clips (way too bright, blown out, not crisp, etc). I found high-quality clips of the same shots/plays from other sources (mainly the 1970 Week 1 'This Week in Pro Football' show) and replaced the original clips with these.
I even re-created the original ABC on-screen graphics.
In some cases the original clips were a bit longer than the replacement shots and so I truncated parts of the narration to make things fit. I also omitted a play or two that I did not have new footage for.
I couldn't find too many replacement shots for the Cardinals/Rams game, so I omitted that one.
I worked on the original audio a bit, applying hiss and noise reduction.
For comparison's sake, you can see the original quality segment here and be blown away by the upgrade --- • (1970-09-21) - Week 1 ...

@@MikeyD347 You spelled "good" wrong, lol. Although, ...now that you mention it, God did send us Josh Allen, ....so He probably is a football fan. That one aside, awesome job man. The clarity of both video and audio are vastly improved in your remaster. Excellent work my friend!

I hate being old but I love being old. Hate because this NFL doesn’t exist anymore - Love because at least I got to live it.

Well said. The current NFL is a joke.

@@john7385 Agreed. I watch high school football these days rather than the NFL or the colleges. More entertaining games and those kids are pretty damn tough and play with a lot of heart.

Very nice. Thanks for sharing. Also a sad reminder of how much better this era of football was than the present one. The atmosphere of the NFL was almost collegiate at that time (not the current collegiate but the one before the current one that they also managed to mess up). Atlanta really needs to bring back the red helmets permanently.

Loved the halftime highlights and the "crowd noise". Just an all around nostalgia rush, I was 8 in 1970.

The one=win Bears from 1969 upsetting the Giants at Yankee Stadium, Don Shula's up and coming Dolphins losing at Harvard Stadium to Boston, and AFL powerhouse Raiders losing at the new Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. Upset weekend for the reconfigured NFL

Monday Night Football halftime highlights used to be such big deal! Television was absolutely archaic compared to today.

Love the old MNF halftime highlights!! Gotta love Greg Landry, the definition of an old slow quarterback, calling a QB sneak for 70 some odd yards! I don't think Lamar Jackson ever had an open field like that today. Only in 1970 for sure.

Back when you could say things like "Remember him, from Utah State?" and "The brilliant rookie from Morgan State!" and "He comes from Bethune-Cookman, in Florida" and people would know what you meant.

Vikings-Chiefs, the Super Bowl rematch -- missing?

I remember many people didn't like Cosell on MNF and would often turn off the audio on the TV and listen to the radio commentary of the game. Today however I really miss Cosell-I think he was great but near the end of his career even he became increasingly disillusioned with what the NFL was becoming.

The Bengals would ultimately start 1-6 and then go on to win 7 in a row finish with an 8-6 record and make the playoffs for the first time (before losing to Baltimore)
