There was a small fire in the canyon behind our house the summer after we moved in (1973?). Fire companies from all over the valley were there, and people were on top of their houses spraying with garden hoses. Our house had roof damage and it was re-roofed with those ceramic tile shingles. I think fire-resistant roofs are in the building code now.

I think there was an episode of this series about the Texas City fire of 1947, and like this it had a lot of very dramatic actuality footage. The thing that sticks in my memory is video of a news reporter standing miles away from Texas City, with the sky behind and above him 100% flames. It looked like he was standing next to an ongoing explosion that just wouldn't stop. I'd sure like to see that one again.
Yes, the Texas City fire was a refinery fire. I used to live in Texas City for about a year, long after that fire. People are still talking about that disaster.
In 2015, a similar scenario to the 1961 Bel Air fire occurred in Lake County. 78% contained as of 8:20 p.m., 21 September 2015 (PDT), the Valley Fire has consumed 75,781 acres and 1910 structures (including approximately 600 homes).
I remember that fire as a kid as I used to live near Mandeville Canyon and had many friends that lived there. Luckily they lived at the canyon floor and not on the ridges. Their houses survived this fire.
Wasn’t there a British version of this show? BTW, wood shingles are illegal in CA. Wildfires in the west, not just CA, have become a normal thing. Environmentalism has gone too far. Nothing is done to prevent these fires and more and more people build homes in fire zones.
November 28-29, 2016. Chimney Tops 2 fire in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, ravages into Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN. Killing 14 people. Damaging or destroying 2,400 structures. 17,000+ acres burned.
You must remember that this happened in the mountains. The contractor's agents were not nearby the early fire; they spotted it on a mountain and reported it as quickly as they could.
