What an incredibly sad day; Marko leaving Nightwish 😢 not only a brilliant bass player, phenomenal vocalist and such a charismatic personality. Marko and Floor’s voices were just heavenly together, Nightwish will never be the same - Marko is irreplaceable . I reiterate your thoughts Tauri - we all are so grateful for everything Marko has given us, the memories will never leave us. First saw Nightwish on the Once tour in 2005 and they’re such a huge part of our lives...I have to say I wish Marko every happiness in the future, I hope every endeavoured he chooses brings him love, health and happiness....thank you Marko, you’re a true inspiration and a wonderful human being 🤘🤘🤘
I don't know Simon the only 'irreplaceable' member is Tuomas as without him the songwriting element is gone. The virtual concert in March will be bittersweet and I hope they get a homerun hire to replace him going forward.

So, Floor and Marko (and Nightwish) helped me through the lock downs. I'm recovering from a burn out and have depression. I thought I would not live through the lock down. But I got through them by watching endless streams of reaction videos of our heroes. This video does almost physically hurt. I guess there were some signs but I ignored them. This is such a shock. Never more his voice and Floor's together. How am I going to survive that? How is Nightwish going to survive that?
2021 is shaping up to be worse than 2020.

I know exactly what you mean!! I worked for 10 years for a company that I didn't even get a thank for once, even though I took care of the most demanding and important things. The pay wasn't good either. I burned out completely and for years hatched self-murderers that still haunt me sometimes. The reason I didn't change job was because of I was left out of school, and never got diploma. I finally lost that job when it got bankruptcy. It's hard to get "back to the surface" on your own, but we have to try. I hope everything turns out to good for both of us.

I have said this before, but here goes again: What an absolutely beautiful human being you are Tauri. And now you gifted us this tribute to Marko, which was beyond poetry. I must admit, that you brought tears to my eyes by just listening your kind words. When I read the news this morning in Finland, first I felt stunned and devastated. But that selfish feeling passed quickly, since I understood that this is Marko's life we talking about. Yes, I will miss him enormously as a member of magical Nightwish, but his life and decisions belong to him and no one else. Thank you Marko for all these years with Nightwish, producing so many unforgettable performances!!!

Thank you for your reaction. It was so heartfelt. Music has a strange way of integrating itself into your life in unexpected ways. It can lift your mood when you're down. It can soothe you when you need calming. It can center you when you are out of balance in life.
We all are struggling with Marko's departure and withdrawal from the public eye, but we have to give him his space at this moment in time. We can't rush him. That's not fair to Marko. I know this is of no comfort, but It took drummer Neil Peart of Rush five years to return to the group after the death of his daughter and life partner (and mother of their daughter) within a year of one another back in 1997, the daughter in a single car auto accident and his partner to cancer. Ironically, Neil succumbed to brain cancer himself just about a year ago. If you have never experienced Rush, I highly recommend them. They have their own 'Rush Army' and are all three superb musicians. I'll offer up The Spirit of Radio as a starting point, but they have a 40+ year library of music.

I'm so sad, but I'm happy that he's doing what's best for himself in order to find himself again. I'll miss him, he's been such an inspiration for just about everything I'm doing now musically. Sending hugs to you and everyone else in the Nightwish Army.

I read the news yesterday, just arriving at work. I tried not to cry all day. When I came back home I burst in tears. My boyfriend who is not a fan, will never be a fan like me, was totally understanding and supportive...

I have a passion for music as I am a musician. I understand where Marko is coming from. He'll be ok. We will be ok. The music already created will live on long after and enjoyed for years to come.

I feel the same way as you do, Nightwish is not just a band. I have been through high and low with their music for 13 years now. The day I saw them live for the first time, is still one if the best days in my life. Now I'm just scared about the band's future and certainly hope this is not the end neither for them nor for Marko. I've been crying like a baby on and off for a few hours now, as if it's about a family member or a friend, it's crazy. I do wish things to get better for them, truly.
Although the reason is very sad, you chose a hell of a good song to say goodbye to Marko your way.... And we will see what future brings. This was a tribute to Nightwish and Marko especially... Keep up the good work Tauri...

Tragically, Marko has found that his passion has become his pain...
A bass player can be replaced. But there is only one MARKO HIETALA!
His brilliant bass, voice and charisma are an enduring part of the Nightwish legacy,
but, if he no longer finds joy in his life, he should seek to rediscover his center.
He will always be part of our love for this band, burned into our shared experiences.
His beautiful soul is hurting right now and perhaps, someday he may rejoin the
public performing arts and grace us with his presence again.
But I would rather he find his health and remain a private citizen than learn of a
more desperate or final tragedy.
So now we begin the mourning of the loss of a band mate, but not the person.
We share our pain and sadness in hopes of lessening of the burden and remember
our joy in the remembrance of his amazing gift that he shared with all of us.
This song particularly describes the melancholy of years passing by and the
sweetness of that innocence, lost, but not forgotten.
To Marko, and the Nightwish community, be well and when you find yourself in pain,
in shadow or struggling, reach out. Talk to someone. Share your sadness with a friend,

Thank you Taurie that was beautiful. I struggle with depression, always have, so I completely support Marcos decision. But it hurts, of course it dose, Nightwish guided me through the worst years of my life. I can honestly say that I am alive because of them, I would have cut my wrist a long time ago without them

I am completely into Nightwish, since only some months. You can't imagine what 'they' did to me in such a short period of time. All the names I love, in music, they seem to have dissapeared to some small place on the background! Truly, truly, real and from the heart musicians and so extremely dedicated and so 'human'. Incomparable to many other 'bands', I understood so quicky, Nightwish'ing' is a way of life, they 'are' life itself. They can't ever be missed and this unique man, Marko, he will, he 'shall' return. He is loved by millions. The music industry will change for the best after this sadness.
Personally speaking, this news came on the worst time for me. I've been away from all social media for a while now due to my own mental health issues (anxiety and depression)
Today, when I finally felt a little better, I logged into my Instagram account, and what's the first thing I saw? Precisely that resignation letter.
My heart dropped to my stomach, my anxiety went right up to the roof, it felt like a huge blow that left me breathless, I couldn't think or speak
I'm still in like an empty state of shock by the news

This is definitely more than "just a band." It's a lighthouse in the storm. Marco's voice has been a presence in my life for over twenty years now. My heart is broken over this, but I do understand his feelings and his frustration with the parasite that is the "music industry" these days. I wish him, the rest of the band, and the whole Nightwish army nothing but the best. I truly hope that all he needs is a little time to find himself and then he will come back to us. I'm certain that I can say on behalf of the army that we will welcome him back with open arms. "Time will tell... this bitter farewell..." And I am totally with you on this. The Music is the finest and ultimate form of art and it touches our hearts in ways that can't be simply described. And certainly, Nigthwish has been one of the most important bands not only in Metal but in Music in general. Even though the future looks grim, let's hope that everything will turn out fine.

It is not at all ridiculous (is this spelled right?) to be emotional about that situation. It was a shock for me too, and I too shed a tear. There will be no-one to replace him.

I think the trade off for the "business side" is performing and being on stage. Due to the nightmare of 2020 (which seemingly will push into this year as well) normal performing is not a reality. Marko looked to me like me loved his band and other projects and he may miss all of that in time. In other words, taking a year off now may not be such a big deal if that is how this plays out.
If not, thank you Marko for ALL you have done and the joy you have given millions of fans.
Yesterday I was reading the book Once upon a Nightwish: about parting ways with Sammi, Tarja and the band. I realized that everything ends sometime. Comparing the band's past with the recent times, there was peace and happiness in the band. And I thought to myself that the lockdown caused the band to lose a lot of enthusiasm because they can't do what they love. And today I got this news. The band didn't even play a live from the new album and Marco was definitely frustrated about it. In addition, Nightwish has an online concert planned, and Marco is probably talking about this problem in his statement.
You said all the right words. Been a fan myself since Century Child album so Marko has always been there. It's a BIG piece that has left NW. But all respect and thanks to Marko for all the memories he has given us! Can see the pain you feel. Take care NW friend 🤘
Crazy thing is that today I listened for the first time the demo version to the Poet and The Pendulum, because I wanted to hear how it sounded with him... And a few hours later he´s gone...
I'm sure NW will find a worthy replacement but Marko will be missed. Such a unique voice and stage presence.
There is time for everything. Marco still do his music anyway. And older songs wont die.

Hi hope u ok it steve in uk again huge nightwish fan .yes very very sad day .marko left due to bit depression and he said was fed up of music industry profiting from his gains .eg. streaming sites takin 9.7 pwr cent of nightwish earnings .top bloke marko alegend great bassist vocalist.hel b missed so much.hope they can carry on tho dont no how.tho people said that when tarja left .wish marko all best and like u said hope he finds happiness in time .keep the faith keep up the great reviews tauri .
I hope that if Marco isn't to return to the band later, they'll find some rare person capable of filling those huge boots. But it's the nature of things, unfortunately. Nothing lasts forever. There will always come change, and sometimes that change is not comfortable.
I wish the best for Marco in whatever he chooses to do in the future - he's brought much joy over the years to so many people, he deserves to find new inspiration and new happiness.
Thats is sad news and also the reason why...something is wrong in this as he says. I was expecting to see him doing not only NW tour with new album but also his own solo album gigs and RJ Christmas concerts together with Floor, Tarja and others...but maybe it is now best that he does what is best for him and stays out from public performances. Tuomas had a difficulty to take this as you said but I think he has found now a replacement for the virtual gig and later concerts for the album tour.

Marco started in the band in late 2001 after replacing Sami who got fired in the same year, he met Tuomas the year before during the Wishmaster tour.
He originally came on as a session musician for century child, he made such an impression that Tuomas gave him the job of bass and backing vocals.
In a 2002 interview Tuomas stated his intention was always to have beauty and the beast style vocals, so Marco was the perfect fit.
His first DVD was end of innocence which had the Summerbreeze 2002 concert as both audio and video, ironically this was also the same show that the band would meet After Forever, and become friends with (then) lead vocalist Floor Jansen.
I’d like to say thank you Marco for your 19 1/2 years (give or take) of service, you and your beard will be missed and to me you will always be Finland’s favourite Viking.
As someone with borderline personality disorder I understand that sometimes juggling life with mental health isn’t easy and that sometimes one’s well-being comes before anything.
I am just happy that you have people around you (wife, kids and such) that love you 🤘

Re: Marko "coming back". That's not really the way things work. He's going to go do other music and be great. And Nightwish will find another great bass player and adapt. Change is the spice of life.

Like he said he turns 55 soon and feels he has done what he needs to do. Cutthroat part of the business aside I hope he finds what he needs to find for peace of mind and soul. It will be interesting to see who replaces him in the band, went through this with Sami Tarja Anette and Jukka so hopefully the band squares away the issues with music/merch and comes back hungry. (Kind of hoped the song selected was 'The Islander' but HH is a great choice.

You have the right to feel how you feel about the situation. Please don't think that you are alone in how you feel. Of course we are all unique but you are in good company. SO MANY people are heartbroken over this. BUT there is still hope. Marko must do what is right for himself, as you know.
The best news I have for you (and anybody else) is that sadness is temporary, just like any other emotion. It will soften with time.

I have to admit I stopped being fan of Nightwish after the Tarja ousting ( I was a fan from the very start, I bought their first album the month it was released in Greece), but there’s no denying that Marco’s influence and talent in the band was significant.
And to terot and to Northern Kings. And to Powerless Trio and His own music. And to Delian. The man has been playing on and in Bands seems he was like sixteen. Formed tarot at 18 or 19. He's been with NW for 25 years. Also he's about 56 or 57 now. He's burnt out after a lifetime of playing. I do believe he'll return to to the best thing it's was and I'm sure will always be his life.

marko was the fatherfigure, the pillar of nightwish and cannot be replaced adaequately. first the sudden passing of alexi. now this totally unexpected step of marko. I´m really sad now. because before all of his other excellent qualities marko was a role model for me how to deal with life. best wishes to him. hope he becomes better and can be happy again. best wishes for the remaining nw. best wishes for you, dear tauri.

Its sad news, but we must also see that he is alredy 54 (i'm 56) and was by far the oldest in the band. Tuomas is 44, Emppu 42, Floor 39. So beside all other problems i can imagins this is also a factor and i personally wouldn't spent my whole live on tour at this age anymore.
So to don't let it take us down, some (maybe) not so serious ideas :
1.And now its time to go out to japan to find a cute little shield maiden there who can not only slap the bass like crazy but also sing better like Marko, because we know whenever we think somebody is really great at it, there surely are hundred of little asian girls out there that are 100 times better.
2.I wanne see Arjen Lucassen make a new epic project bringing Nightwish and Lovebites together.
Oh also, i don't hope that this meets already the criteria that Tuomas mentioned that the band won't survive another line-up change, and i hope that was more just meant about the main vocalist, so Floor in that case. Even if Marko of course also did quite a lot singing.
I would love to hear Miyako and Midori (what a team!) on an Ayreon album. And with Floor? I can already feel my pulse racing..
But this band is like vehicle of spirit and Marco is a legend, mature, experienced, charismatic artists with his finnish soul that fits Nightwish. Not easy task to repleace him.
High hopes. Maybe? Meanwhile Nightwish is not "just a band". I feel like you. A sad day for Nightwish and their fans.
