This is why you hear old school rappers talk so negatively about the new school rappers. The reason: They took rap SERIOUSLY! It wasn’t a game with them. When they spat bars they were trying to destroy the mic to the best of their ability. Trying to make it so no one wanted to go after them. Nowadays tho...
This comment gives me hope that there are more people than I thought that share a similar sentiment. There’s a reason you see old school rappers gravitate towards artists like Kendrick, J Cole, King Los etc.. like them or not it’s obvious that these type of young rappers are putting a lot of effort to not only pay homage to the founders, but also pushing the genre forward while still keeping certain things intact. For starters being able to crush a mic is an absolute must. Like you said, the old school rappers took this seriously, they set themselves apart by being an excellent emcee as opposed to finding a hot producer and putting together a catchy hook. Music was a lifestyle for these guys, it wasn’t a means to an end, that was just a bonus. You were a rapper, you didn’t just rap, they actually take pride in their abilities.
although i completely agree with ur statement, unfortunately dinosaurs die. thats life. the entire genre, like all others, has changed. once something is done to near perfection, in this case lyricism, the journey to elevate it is nearly impossible and if somehow possible, the improvement would be marginal and overlooked. nowadays kids lean toward sonically pleasing vibe tracks, in reference to mumble raps popularity. if u cant out rap someone, u seek attention thru other ways. every generation has a response to the previous one and usually the older respond negatively toward the younger (juvenoia). i assume for the majority its tough to adjust to a rapidly changing world, and im sure its more n more difficult. what prolly took several generations to start freakin out the older population just decades ago is closer to the immediate prior generation presently. 50s pop rock was too sexual, 60s rock was too influenced by drugs, 70s rock was too experimental, 80s rock was too glam, 90s rock was to simple, 00s rock was too fred durst lol. remember when the world hated auto-tune? seems like water under the bridge now, t pain, 808 & heartbreaks, etc seem to get lumped in with the opposition to mumble rap... the point is no one is goin to convince kids whats good or not, in fact all this hate from us oldheads only push them further that way, besides its all relative anyway. nothing makes either form or any other superior. its preference. again, i side with u, lyricism > the rest. tariq is goat. just wish everyone would chill out on the trashing or music that aint for u. let it play out. its not for us. dont worry, our vibe will come back around. its 2019, girls are wearing 90s mom jeans now. everything is cyclical.... dabs made me write this
Eh, Em is my favourite artist, but I can't imagine what argument, perspective or criteria you could apply to place Em's freestyles above something like this. The difference in technical skill is minimal, the difference in depth is quite significant.
I just wrote an essay arguing why you CAN compare them but I deleted it...can't be fucked. Regardless, there's no harm in pitting the freestyles against each other imo, as long as it isn't "i like em's better!" vs "i like thought's better!" without any actual discourse.
Hey man Black Thought didn't just become a super rapper, he been doing this for 20+ years. I'm 31 and been bumping The Roots since I was 12. Dude been a beast.

The crazy part is I think many missed the reference to [his pen being] Henry Kissinger. Kissinger was foreign policy advisor and national security to several presidents and was responsible for toppling several governments and responsible for many massacres. I wonder how many caught that killer reference.
Yeah. But one has had to have been politically aware of Henry Kissinger during POTUS Nixon administration and in part being NSA National Security Advisor writing peace treaties geopolitics etc
I caught it I've listened to this a bunch of times I caught everything by now and he goes insane with a lot of lines that one being a really good on. This is probably the best freestyle of the last decade - possibly ever. I'm sure parts of it were pre-written, but that doesn't take away from the genius of it. This is what it feels like you you get hit with a whole lot of undeniable truth on a ridiculous flow.
Zebrion it was all written, no human can freestyle like this! Doesn’t make it any less amazing though...greatest lyrical display in history right here!!
Josh Mason Zebrion it was a both. That’s the brilliance of it. how he flowed from freestyle to written and still kept that intelligent content. Rewatch and check when he touched his head. That’s a tell.
dude writing great stuff is harder than just freestyle it, freestyle is like form of the day. Like any professional you prepare. Boxers train, UFC warriors train and prepare. so no shame in prewritten
honestly it still boggles my mind when people that supposedly like/love hip hop say its their first time hearing black thought. tariq been in the game 25 years killing everything he touches. i just don't get it.
Can't blame people for what they haven't been exposed to. You can just help expose good music to people. Plus hip hop is huge you can spend a year in Eminiem's discography or Tech N9ne or Tupac. Very easy to miss great work. Even Black Thought talks about the people who flew under the radar in this freestyle. Unfortunately it happens. Luckily for us he adapted with technology and dropped this insane freestyle that I don't think anyone can top and brought him more exposure.
Black Thought should be in everybody’s top 10 of all time. Been in the game since the early 90’s with Beanie Siegel, then “The Roots”. The stamina in this freestyle is crazy, definitely a legend in the game!!!!
The Roots - 75 bars(blacks reconstruction)...he wrote it in 20 mins after he heard the beat...then go check the year it was released...he’s been the truth for decades
Out of all reactions to all songs this is my absolute favorite. It's like the only reaction that has the proper reaction to black thought spitting fire. Lmao. I've watched this vid like 30 times and it's always a good watch.

Loved your reaction. There's plenty of black thought content to choose from (PLENTY!) The Imperial (Statik Selektah) ft Action Bronson, Royce da 5'9, Black Thought could be an awesome start.
Black Thought was the best hands down, Loaded Lux, Axel Leon, Benny & Conway, Royce da 5 9, J.I.D, Cory Gunz. Also definitely react to more Black Thought. He's the GOAT, get's overlooked because he was always in a group with the Roots. Check Birds Eye View and The Imperial
Man I Love your reactions. I just heard this song today. I was reacting just like you. Lol. I was speechless. I had to send this song to everyone. This was their first time hearing it too. They were calling me to talk about.
Love your videos, homie. umm, I saw the Roots back in 1995, and Black Thought was an absolute mutant on microphone, even back then. He is inspirational MC to many emcees, in terms of purity, and textbook technique. His writing(lyrics) are extremely advanced. I am a big fan, and this video proves why......
Agreed! I couldn't stop laughing at his reaction it was so pure. Preston's reactions are so relatable. Its like when Preston looked at the screen when he reacted to Nas Ether and the line about Jay Z look. Also priceless
The way you were "hearing" what he was saying, I was like "yeah this man knows good hip hop, he already knows black thought, so he gets all the little messages and references in there". The I heard you say this is the first time I have ever heard Black Thought rap. Bro, if you love "conscience rap" like I heard you mention, def listen to The Roots... all of it. The Roots were starting by Black Thought and Questlove long ago, they have had other musicians since the start, but they are one of the best rap groups ever. Black Thought kicks some crazy thinker shit man. You will be hooked. The Roots is basically what turned me on to underground about 14 years ago when I made a Pandora channel for The Roots. I started hearing shit I hadn't heard and searching for artists like them. Now a days what I expect from a hip hop artists is greatness, because there are many amazing hip hop artists out there, but sadly they are mostly underground.
I see a lot of people saying this is why old school is better than today’s hip hop... back in the day the popular music was mostly rock and roll and corny disco music and shit, rap wasn’t the mainstream music and that’s exactly why old school artists will forever be more talented, they just had to work ten times harder to get as big as they are, it wasn’t just about having a good producer make you a trap beat and spit the same triplet formula over it
I love watching people discover how great Black Thought is. Love when you said he just became a "super rapper", He has been top 5 dead or alive since the early 90's.
I'm french and all the french know The Roots since long time, they are not just a music group in Jimmy Fallon show! You american have the chance to have a great hip hop artists in your country! so stop listen mumble rappers, Eminem opend your ears with kamikaze, now Black Thought...believe me, don't play dumb! suport real hip hop!
YOU NEVER HEARD BLACK THOUGHT SPIT?!?!?! I'm actually jealous. To hear the human named Black Thought for the first time was just ridiculous. 25yrs of him body a track. I'm pleased the world FINALLY see.
He is from the ROOTS an amazing well ahead of their time hip hop band not group but band they use instruments, great drummer quest love n an amazing beat boxer too rahzel him n Black Thought on the mics sooo amazing live maybe the best live so already knew black Thought was a top of the range spitter n I love that he has never compromised his muzik, nuff respect.

Told you this shit was fire. Black Thought a real MC
Black Thought is incredible!! I’ve been listening to him and The Roots for over 20 years.
Man I Love your reactions. I just heard this song today. I was reacting just like you. Lol. I was speechless. I had to send this song to everyone. This was their first time hearing it too. They were calling me to talk about.
Black Thought has been like this since Day 1. It is gratifying for the younger generation to discover the 1990s conscious rappers.
Whoever had the best freestyle on Flex??? U just reacted to that jawn 😩💯💯💯💯
The hip hop gods are pleased...loool
E M87
WORD! I'm surprised he didn't announce that the HIP HOP GODS are pleased!

Black Thought is the hip hop god
Awesome reaction. I knew you would love and appreciate this

His m.f. Brain just works at another level…. Poet
PRhyme ft Black Thought - Wishin II
Justin Lee so slept on!! Riq mirders that jawn!!
15:35 part is so funny man. I couldn't hold my laugh at Prestons face expression. Dope stuff mate. Legendary reactor
Agreed! I couldn't stop laughing at his reaction it was so pure. Preston's reactions are so relatable. Its like when Preston looked at the screen when he reacted to Nas Ether and the line about Jay Z look. Also priceless
5 and a half minutes in, the brain had to reset 😂 Thought the GOAT imo
Your face during the entire video. Just processing what is happening haha
BEST REACTION I've seen!!!
Watched this three times, you almost made me cry...weird bro
Greatest alive.
Also lmao I love how near the end you're just like fuck it throw all the sound effects at this.
I see a lot of people saying this is why old school is better than today’s hip hop... back in the day the popular music was mostly rock and roll and corny disco music and shit, rap wasn’t the mainstream music and that’s exactly why old school artists will forever be more talented, they just had to work ten times harder to get as big as they are, it wasn’t just about having a good producer make you a trap beat and spit the same triplet formula over it
"I tell a story like finger prints and blood splatter"
If you liked that, check the freestyle he spit at Harvard....do a reaction to THAT! You won't be disappointed!
He said its Sharia Law on Your Sherri Amore?!?!? Jrvjsndvksisbdbkwba😩
Hahahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣yessssss
Cheri Amore
I love watching people discover how great Black Thought is. Love when you said he just became a "super rapper", He has been top 5 dead or alive since the early 90's.
This is one of the things I listen to to start my day.
