Things that I found when I was in France was shocking to me in a way. The grocery store I went to when I was in Grenoble 9 years ago was similarly big and they had a huge yogurt aisle with a lot of unflavored yogurt. You don't find that kind of an aisle here in the US and the yogurt sold here is made with ingredients that shouldn't even be in our bodies to begin with. Another thing that shocked me was the cheese, especially ones labeled "lait cru" (raw milk). Raw milk is illegal in the US and that was very cool to try some of those cheeses and not get any illness from it as our stupid country claimed a long time ago. Since my experience in France, I have been drinking my coffee black and have learned to eat quality ingredients and read labels at the grocery store.

I had my favourite cheese here in the States for the longest time - gourmandise with cherries - but haven't been finding it for the past few years. Asked around, and found out that the U/S has been banning its import because it isn't pasteurised. Unfortunate that it isn't made with pasteurized cheese..

    • @Imaginexall
      @Imaginexall ปีที่แล้ว

Tho I heard that americans can get easily ill eating our raw milk cheeses, because your bodies aren't used to the bacterias in it (for example, french women can't eat raw milk cheese during pregnancy, it can lid to listeriosis and toxoplasmosis infections).

I discovered your channel recently and I watch it to practice my English too. I am French and I find it so funny to see foreigners being fascinated by French shops. Once I was shopping and I came across an American family (I think lol) who were marvelling at the yoghurts xD I never really realised how lucky we were to have so many good products in France. I was born here and I'm used to always shopping, eating healthy actually became normal and a habit for me. It's when I travel that I realise the differences and also that we don't realise how lucky we are, we complain too much!
But I find it fascinating to see the differences in culture, I would love to travel to the US one day, the skyscrapers have always impressed me! And maybe I'll find some unusual products in their shop too lol

The flour aisle was the most amazing to me. In UK we have plain flour or self-raising flour - and a few oddities like cornflour or wholemeal flour - all in all it occupies maybe 10 foot (3m) of aisle. A typical French supermarket will have a whole aisle devoted to flour - loads of different types for different breads/cakes/pastries etc.... Amazing....

    • @mayaklast6334

I experienced this in reverse recently. I'm French and the first time I went shopping to get ingredients for baking and making a cake in London I couldn't believe the small selection of baking stuff (including cooking chocolate... I could never even find real praliné and plain 60% cooking chocolate was so expensive 😅). I went to three supermarkets and combed through the aisles of Waitrose several times, certain I had missed the right one, before I had to admit defeat.
I was really surprised. It hadn't crossed my mind things like that could be hard to find on the other side of the tunnel.

Oh, how I missed going to France this year to do my Christmas shopping! French supermarkets do Christmas so much better than ours in the UK do - ours are just piles of cheap sweets, whereas in France there are those too, but also the lovely selection boxes you showed, and the hampers with jams or wine and paté (so useful as presents for one's elderly mother, who loves that kind of thing), and so on.... to say nothing of the smoked salmon (okay, you can get that here, too) or the foie gras with its gingerbread and onion or fig chutney..... I do hope that by next Christmas we will be able to travel again.

Thanks, Diane. I love wandering around foreign grocery stores just to see what is similar or different. When we were in France in 2017, we stopped at at GIGANTIC Carreforre”(sp?) somewhere in the south of France. It was ginormous- bigger than the Costco here. They had everything. If they didn’t have it, you don’t need it. Some employees were on roller skates. They had fresh game - definitely authentic because the unskinned leg and hoof were there...... The whole place was fascinating. We got hopelessly lost in the dang parking lot - getting out was frustrating, but also hilarious. A tour of one of those giant stores would be interesting.

Loved the selection of Lindt chocolate! My favorite 🥰 (other than Callebaut). Totally forgot about pate! Always used to have it at Christmas when growing up in Canada.

I think I got just as emotional about being back in a French supermarket via video as I get from all the beautiful photos of the architecture, countryside etc in France. Cointreau flavoured cream - that's definitely a first for me. I am still surprised everytime I see the huge range of chocolate flavoured breakfast cereals in French supermarkets. I suspect it is not limited to supermarkets in France and that we in Australia with 2-3 varieties are the odd ones out.
I love this sort of format with the brief intro and wrap up with well edited filming and interesting content. I liked that it was snappy and focussed particularly on the theme of Christmas. I create to dos to watch your longer videos but I never seem to get around to them. When I see anything above about 13 mins I think I don't have time to watch now - do it later. I have so many videos in my "To watch later" part of my library. :)
Thanks again for this video. I will share it within the FB group I help admin. The members will absolutely ❤it!!!
    Joyeux Noël Diane

Bonjour! What a great video! I love seeing how the French shop on a daily basis. I try and go with my husband's family when we're visiting. I'm from California and when we've wandered into the "Mexican Food" section, I shudder! :-D My (French) husband came in while I was watching and was mesmerized by all the brands and foods he's missing because of the lockdown. Thank you for this trip. Have a fantastic Christmas and New Year's.

As a retired chef, I love grocery/market crawls. I was in France and Paris in the early '80s when I was in college at the Culinary Institute of America. We visited anything that had to do with professional cooking. I know we did go shopping in Lyon for a little wine & cheese picnic we wanted. Thank you for your videos.

I loved this video! Whenever I go to France I like going to grocery stores, and especially to shower gel and shampoo section, I am absolutely mesmerized by the variety of scents and cute packaging!! My mom grew up between la Haute Savoie and Avignon, so we go to France pretty often, I'm even thinking of moving there with my husband and kids. Anyway, I am a new Sub :)

Most of us start the day with coffee and tartines (baguette bread + butter and jam). We really don't eat that much in the morning compared to Germans for instance.

Tea, coffee or orane juice, brioche , break, butter, marmelade or corn flakes and milk for big kids lol. French try to avoid sugar and eat more organic food. Kiss from France

As a drink, cereals, chocolate or cofee are common. And then we eat mostly tartines (either honey or jam on top of a buttered slice of baguette). Sometimes fruits. If we want to make it fancy, we'll add some viennoiseries, croissants for instance, and maybe some orange juice. Overall the breakfast is mostly sweet stuff.

I was amazed at the deli section and the cheese section in the store. I was in a small town, St. Zacharie, and the local supermarche focused on a different cheese each week. They had a load of information about the cheese, where it was from, it's history etc. One thing I had difficulty with was milk. Confusing, all the kinds and types. The deli section was very different, with rabbits and more "raw" looking items. Great video. I hope you will go to some brocantes and vide grenier.
