    First, not a bad how-to, but there are a few steps I definitely would advise on including for anyone doing this..You should always cover up the engine with a blanket/trash bag to keep metal debris from getting all over the engine bay, whenever cutting into a hood. You should also get some touch-up paint ($20 or so at dealerships) and spend the 5 minutes it takes to file/paint the cut surfaces...it'll keep it from chipping/rusting/etc. Also, rivets work, but the high seal glue/sealant will hold without needing to drill into the hood, and its a perfect seal all the way around the vent. You can clearly see how flimsy that hood was when drilling, and afterwards there is a gap under the vent and the hood...debris/dirt/water will get in there and build up. These are just basic steps to take to do it right the first time...kind of hard to undo rivets...so I'd also take time to tape down the vent, measure out the rivet locations, and use pilot holes from a much smaller bit at first vs just drilling into the vent sitting loosely in the cut area .
    These didnt turn out bad, but a lot of ppl will do the same and be in a hurry and do it wrong or mess up when they could have prevented making any mistakes. Also, WHERE you place the vents makes a difference...try not to just leave vents like this directly above open air filters or fuse boxes or where water will puddle next to coils/plugs/etc... You can buy hydrophobic mesh for around $20 that you can secure underneath the vent to prevent water from getting into the engine bay, if you're not going to use a plate/something to divert water away from anything under the vent. The mesh allows air to vent but does not allow water/dirt to get in (same material used on ATVs/motorcycles/air filters).

      True. All that cutting and knowing all of the metal bits just falling into the engine bay made me cringe. The rivets make it look like a cheap job. Polyurethane sealant would of made it look way better but also seal it properly from water and dirt. And since these guys didn't sand back the cut edge and touch up paint it will 100% start to rust over time. They may be the most cringe part of all. Especially on a car like that. Also the drilling prior to the rivets is a good way to punch a dent into the bonnet if your not careful.

    • @dham99
      @dham99 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spaghetti5038 I ended up installing some on my 2016 Focus ST shortly after this… I ended up filing/painting and then plastic riveting them because they are black, so it actually looks OEM. I was able to rivet in specific spots as to get the vents to contour with the hood.. some slight sealant underneath, turned out great. Def a cringe moment first cutting into the hood though 😅

      You never ever put seal glue on a hood for a vent the area gets hot and that seal glue expands and wi'll open up..... you use Factory rivets just like manufacturers and Engineers use

      its a very serious consideration to have when doing vents. Best case, get vents that come with trays that divert water to a non-impact area of the engine bay (like vented hoods from the factory)..worst case, which is what I did, is get some hydrophobic mesh to secure under the vent and it'll keep water from getting in pretty much completely...its cheap and will make the difference between tons of water and dirt getting in and ONLY air getting out.

    Would it be more effective if you put the vents the other way around ? So air would go in ?

      No It's not a hood scoop. Its to vent hot air out of the engine bay

    Sure would have placed a blanket between the hood and the engine while doing all of this cutting and drilling...

    I mean. Yes, they look lovely but guys.. listen.. His bonnet is now warped at the vents. The vents installed aren't at the same profile. Look at the light cast on the slow mo's. Still looks a clean enough install. So.. yes, as advised, lift the bonnet, figure out where the vent will sit. Consider water getting in. Consider a tight spot. Think before you cut. lay a sheet or carpet under. And the ball or similar. When you make your cut. Deburr the metal. Pray some paint into a lid or similar, paint the fresh flesh you just exposed with a tiny paint brush. The blanket / carpet are for the bazillion fragments you potentially get into your bay. PRE drill your vents, then mark up on the bonnet. Don't just go for it on the bonnet or you might end up with a go faster stripe you didn't want. Please think before you do this. Guys, you make content, that's fine but please supply hazards and good advice too.
