  • The All Blacks have suffered yet another defeat at the hands of the Springboks, going down 18-12 in Cape Town in their second rugby test of the year. New Zealand have now lost four straight against their arch-rivals, which hasn't happened since 1949 - a year where New Zealand lost all six tests they played (four to South Africa and two to Australia).
It's Only Sport host Martin Devlin gets perspectives from both corners of the ring. Firstly, he is joined by SuperSport's Philasande Sixaba who offers a South African perspective, and talks about why their national rugby side are so good and whether or not they can get better.
Then, Devlin is joined by former All Black Richard Turner who dives deep to find positives in New Zealand's performance.

Goodness there must be 20 games in the last 10 years we as SA could say the same. Once that mentality creep sets in, it can take a cycle or two to erase. Whilst I don’t think it’s panic stations for NZ, it cannot be business as usual. If it is, better for us.

Mate, it’s not just four games. NZ have lost 6 out of the last 9 games between the Boks. People need to stop thinking “the games are close” and focus on the fact that 6 out of 9 games have been lost - a very concerning pattern. Comforting oneself with “close losses” was never something the All Blacks did - and shows how the culture of losing is becoming accepted and normalised. Nobody cares if the games were close or not - they look at the win / loss ledger and it is becoming alarmingly lopsided of late.

The reality is, that the Boks could put together 2 world class teams, whereas we struggle to put together 1 team. The cupboard is a bit thin, but we are slowly developing some quality players. Just look at these 2 games in SA, out of it have come, Tamaiti Williams, Ethan Blackadder and Wallace Sititi, all tested at the top level and shown they are up to it. Why is our cupboard so bare, just look back at the last 3 years, Sam Cane being the perfect example. Blood some more new players like Noah Hotham and in 12 months we will be fine

New Zealand have shown enough flashes of brilliance to convince me they'll return to the no. 1 spot in the world by 2027. I think they will win the next Webb Ellis - if they give their coaches time to build a team. To expect them to beat the Boks in their own backyard under a new management structure, and without several elite players who retired after 2023, is unrealistic. The Boks are coasting after two world cups in a row and the best strength in depth they've ever had. New Zealand do not have the same depth, were badly coached for years under Fozzie, and are in search of a new identity. Does this mean Razor can do no wrong? Of course not. It does mean we need a sense of perspective when assessing the ABs' evolution. He needs time to get things to click.

Sorry to say mate but I disagree, Fozzie was not the problem, your ABs have become predictle in attack since Razor came in and they rarely are a threat, not scoring in the last 20min is concerning. Fozzie did not have this issue, he was working with what he had, to blame him for losing now is crazy.

@@fomofud9479 You? I'm half South African, half Irish. 😅 I want a team wearing green to win the next Webb Ellis, but I've been following the game long enough to know that purple patches come and go and the only constant in world rugby is South African and All Blacks greatness. The ABs came within a conversion of winning the last one and they managed that with fourteen men. They are elite whether they lose or not.

    • @fomofud9479
      @fomofud9479 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

@davesmith826 the AB's are always going to be in with a chance, as are the Boks, the current Irish side, France, and England. I agree with you, this is a young AB side, and Razor is a great coach, and they can only get better from here until 2027. However, I will say that the AB dominance of the past is in the past, and it's a far more open playing field now. Will they have a good chance in 2027, 100%, will they win it, maybe but you can put maybe behind 5 sides at least. The number 1 side in the world is the Boks, the most consistent side, Ireland and the side wih the most potential, the AB's. Throw France and England in the mix who both have good RWC records as the share 1 RWC and 7 finals between them it's anybodies RWC to win, no guarantees whatsoever. Out of 10 RWC's the favourites have only won 4 x.

Super Rugby has become a "second division" tournament. Effectively, the NZ franchises are only testing themselves again one another. This reminds me of SA's isolation years, when the Currie Cup was all we had, and it took us years to catch up, post isolation. NZ Rugby needs to somehow resolve this situation to improve the depth and quality of its playing pool. I suggest starting by allowing overseas based players who compete at a higher level week in, week out, to be eligible for the AB's.

We've been down this road before, it ain't time to panic. Your SA guest is correct, Razor needs to build experience into this side by throwing new blood into the cauldron. They seem hesitant to experiment to find needed combinations that work. Rotating the same players in and out that definitely isn't working well enough is just a waste of time. Razor and co. need to find a new "group" of play makers to build a future RWC squad around.

As a Saffa, in recent years (from what I read and watch on documentaries) there is a strong leadership collective that supports Siya. It could just be a lack of personality or media spark in SB, but his captaincy feels flat both on and off the field. A few mistakes made and at this level most teams can punish you. To get a SA team in their best form in years and at home and not get blown away but lose in close games is something to be acknowledged. Penalties and ill discipline is a negative though, costing them big time. Yes we also need to manage the final 20, which is something ABs teams have nearly always been good at. Of concern to me is once again, no one attempting a drop kick or set up that play. Seems like we haven’t learnt that since Carter retired.

Panic? God some Kiwis are just knee-jerk fools. As an American who loves how NZ plays this great game, I am consistently appalled at the negative, brutal, and sometimes preposterous comments by New Zealanders against their team (maybe I should stop reading the Reader Comments on Stuff articles). I mean, I get it: you don't like losing and you want every team to be like the Richie McCaw teams of 2011-15. But it ain't that now, is it? Still, you've got great players albeit in a completely new coaching set up, so -- as everyone keeps saying -- it's going to take time. No team has outright pummeled the AB's since Razor took over, as some Kiwis seem to be suggesting. Yes, the losses are frustrating, but let's stop acting like the All Blacks are in the situation that the Wallabies are in. Now THAT was a loss (67-27) to be concerned about. Keep things in perspective, people. Razor didn't accidentally become a winning coach for so many years.

We need to have the mindset that we don't just want to win, but destroy teams. I wonder if we are trying to just protect our lead, and shut up shop. You can't protect a lead if your just defending for the last 15. We're missing moanga badly. I like many other kiwis refused to buy an Allblack jersey for a long time when they first started selling them in shops, because I believe you had to earn the right to wear it. Obviously, I've changed my tune, because I know now that it's professional the proceeds go to the team. NZ care about our country just as much as South Africa. It's more than a game for us. Unfortunately younger nz kids are becoming more diverse in the sports which they are interested in, which is Unfortunately not helping our national sport. We simply don't have the population to make up the numbers. I don't think the Allblacks are too far off, and many of our young players are only 23, and not by any means near there peak. So, the future is looking OK. I think not having South Africa in the super rugby is definitely hurting our performance. My thinking is Australia rugby is in danger of completely collapsing. Peter steph du toit has got to be in the conversation for world's best player at the moment. A great defender.

Don't panic, the greatest All Black team came from a rude awakening in 2009. We had a great Bok team like now. Funny also this Bok team born from a good thrashing from the All Blacks & we slowly ate away at your dominance. The 2019 game at the world cup was a turning point if watched closely. So no no packing this ain't the greatest All Blacks & this is a generational Bok team.

Lets be very honest. The direction Razor is going is way off. The end of the year Northern Hemisphere tour is coming and it is the perfect time to realign and makes changes.
Firstly, a few pointers for Razor. BB and DMAc are not 1st Fives. As long as these two start all blacks will never win big games. Pick only one in the reserve for big games as cover for FB. Richie Moanga is ok and better than BB and DMAc at 1st five. If Richie is available BB and Dmac should never be picked.
Secondly, Rico has to go. Rico is the reason why all blacks did not win the world cup. It was lost in the quarter final when he sledged departing Irish player. Perhaps if he had performed a haka and bring him to tears rather than derail him in his last day, Rugby Gods will be smiling at AB. It is karma. Like Gregans "wait 4 more years" Sledge and austrlai lost to final to England
On the other hand, you see the South African players will never ever do such acts and go down that low. They are very respectful and good people and they will keep winning. Rugby Gods will make South Africa win and they will keep winning unless Scott makes these changes
Thirdly, Don't let Sam Cane go. All Blacks have to keep him for big games. All Blacks Maul Defense is good because of him. Just keep him at test level and no other Rugby or very minimal club Rugby. Young loosies should hang around with Cane and learn about humility and respect
A message to BB, Dmac, Rico, Ardie Savea and TJ. Please make yourselves unavailable for 2 years. Ardie you are good but not a Back Row. You are too light.
That out of the way, now let’s select the team.
Front row sorted out by Jason Ryan. Won’t talk about it.
Locking sorted out with Tupou, Scott, Darry, Pat Tuipulotu and Josh Lord
Loosies. Do away with Ardie for a while. Go with Siti, Sotutu, Cane, Ethan, Jacobson, Papalii and Finau
Young stars like Satiti and Finau have to be grounded and train hard in the gym and bulk up for the next world cup. Sotutu has to work harder off the ball.
Half Backs: TJ out. Cam Roigard [has to learn to scream and communicate game time], Ratima and Noah Hotham
Back Line: 1st Five: Harry Plummer [Inside center Cover]
2nd five: JB [Fullback and first five cover]
Outside Centre: Billy Proctor / ALB
Wings: Clarke and Will Jordon [Fullback Cover]
Fullback: Ruben Love [1st Five Cover]
Wings: Shaun Stevson [Fullback Cover], Talaea and Narawa
    Centre: Quinn Tupaea
Messaage to BB, DMac, Ardiae, Rico and TJ. If you want All Backs to evolve and be world leaders again, please make yourselves unavailable for 2 years. Please just do it for your country. You will come back stronger in 2 years.
New Zealand team reminds me of NSW State of Origin. They always had the best players in their positions but never selected them in their position until Madge came and now NSW will be untouchable.

Pity the person who is the Head Coach of either the ABs or SA rugby.
These countries want success. There is no"leeway". For example, the poor performance of the SA age group players , ditto their undercooked 7's, provoked a storm of protest amongst the game's lovers in SA
But because of the real love of the rugby union game, and its visible ( as opposed to past theoretical) access to all racial groupings in SA ,it seems the flow of talent to their teams will simply increase. And there is prodigious amounts of talent , "out there"

Very Difficult to beat the reigning world champions at home, especially when they’ve effectively replaced their pack. 15 players should play 80 minutes except for injury. Before any triggered SA fans comment, I’d say that if it was any team doing it.

Then more controversial paid refereeing in the final against France, who were clearly better than NZ in that final. No objections in 2016 but 2011 was a complete farce, FACT.
